I'll never tire of this one. The clown was running full steam down the field. Blocker doesn't know exactly what is going on behind him, was he supposed to let him proceed down the field and tackle the runner? If the clown would have let up, I'm positive he wouldn't have been blocked.
Yeah that guy was a clown. The dude had spent the first few weeks of that season throwing blocks and making hits on unsuspecting players..Well if you want to get in the nitty gritty of football like that, be prepared to take some hits yourself. The second someone actually did that when he was trying to play tough football he flopped on the ground.

It wasn't just that he blind-sided a few players, he was a head hunter, and should have been ejected a number of times during earlier games. But what can you expect...lil fatty kicker was from milwaukee.

And the Waters hit on him was shoulder to shoulder. Horrible call.

30!

The footage of Rhys Lloyd nailing a walk off field goal to win the axe in 2003 is well known. But Lawrence Maroney pushed the Gophers out into a lead in the axe game that year with his 30 yard touchdown run. His TD run opened the scoring in the 1st quarter. The TD run came at the end of the Gopher's opening drive where they took huge chunks of yardage and bolted down the field to set the tone.

The run takes place at the 1:58 mark of this video:

As a side story... I had my then 5 year old son in attendance for this one as his very first Gopher game. I bought him a little souvenir Gopher football and he was clutching like a sack of potatoes as we exited the windy north doors of the Metrodome. As we got down to the street, the ball squirted out from under his arm. He pulled away from my hand to turn around and pick it up. As he did, a 6'4" completely wasted sconnie fan took a full-on run at it and kicked it with all his might like it was the opening kickoff, missing my son's hands and face by a fraction of an inch. Almost immediately, at least a half dozen Gopher fans started screaming and pushed the drunkin' sconnie up against one of those 2D sports sculptures. Another person ran out into the street to retrieve the ball and brought it back to my son. I'll never forget it and I pretty much tell the story any time that game is mentioned, like it is a reflex.

29!

We are already into the 20s! Where has the summer gone? Up in Canadian wildfire smoke, I guess.

Darius Taylor's 29 yard TD run vs Illinois last season was more than a big help in defeating the Illininillini on the road. The win was big at the time as Illinois was ranked, but proved even bigger by year's end as Illinois finished out with a nice season, a big bowl victory, and high expectations for 2025.

Taylor's TD run is at the 51 second mark of this video:

28!

Virginia Tech used to be one of those teams I used to hope the Gophers could reach the same level of national respect for. Regular New Years bowls, top 10 rankings, notable home stadium team entrances, and well known players. They are now a shadow of their former selves. I realize they were short handed for the Mayo Bowl last year but in general it still felt like the Gophers were toying with a junior varsity team all night. It was actually embarrassing the score was as close as it was.

But, there were a couple bright spots like this 28 yard Darius Taylor TD run.

For 28, Dan Nystrom.
  • 2000 All Big Ten Second Team.
  • 2002 Music City Bowl MVP.
  • Most FG in Gopher History
