ANNUAL GOPHERHOLE PICTORIAL COUNTDOWN TO GOPHERS SEASON OPENER!!

Thank you for the clarification. I shot from the hip on that one. So did the Gophers play San Jose State at home two years in a row? That screwed my memory up.

I was at that game too. We had non-football-loving guests along and ended up going to a bar to watch the rest of the game during the weather delay.
Yup,

2013 was the year where Nelson was injured so Mitch took over and rushed for four touchdowns. That was when San Jose State had David Fales as QB as well. Then 2014 they played again and Mitch was injured so Chris Streveler had to step in.

42!
Time for some Drew Wolitarsky love. His 42 yard TD reception on a halfback pass was a thing of beauty.

If I recall, this game included a bear hug holding out in the open field for all to see that was ignored by the refs on an Iowa touchdown.

Perfectly executed. Those massive decals on the back of the helmets though? Not so much.

#42! Hubie Bryant was a Gopher wide-out in the 60s (1965 to 1967), who's play and responsibilities exemplified a huge change beginning to evolve in offensive schemes from the days of the Single Wing, Full House T and Wing T formations to the use of split ends, flankers and wide receivers plus the wider splits on the interior offensive lines and an opening up the entire field of play. He was always a threat to get open for a big gain and played professionally after college.

There have been several games with Iowa in recent years where the Gophers have lost despite being the better team. Things tend to even out so but these recent games have more than evened out 2010 and 2011 when the shoe was on the other foot.

39!
Here is a 39 yard pass play to Devin Crawford-Tufts that was critical to the back to back Gophers upsets of Iowa.

In the 30s! Some photos for 39.

Thompson completely dusted Michigan on that one. Nobody gained any ground on him. We have had a lot of good backs but I haven't seen anyone at the U since at least Maroney athletically torch a top defense like that. Greatest run in Gopher history.

37!

One of the more frustrating losing streaks in Gopher history finally came to an end in 2018 when the Gophers went on the road and made themselves bowl eligible by beating Wisconsin 37-15 in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicated.

That game meant a lot. Winning the Axe for the first time in 15 years was the headline but the game also served notice that Minnesota was a rising program under new coach Fleck and with lots of puzzle pieces returning for 2019 - it was a time of guarded optimism that would turn to elation when that 2019 season did finally play out.

That was quite the pre-game speech.
