ANNUAL GOPHERHOLE PICTORIAL COUNTDOWN TO GOPHERS SEASON OPENER!!

Frank Larson, All American end on Gopher National Champ squads of the 1930s! 3 National Titles in a row remains the all-time record and it's solely held by our Golden Gophers; 1932, 1933 and 1934!
Herb Hein, All American on Gopher National Champ teams in early 40s. Both wore #49!
Don't forget Jumpin' Jim Brunzell.

48!

For 48 we get a reminder of what might have been had Phillip Nelson’s Gopher career hadn’t become complicated (and short).

That was a fun opener. The whole game was full of big plays.
  • Nelson's 48 yard touchdown run
  • Marcus Jones 98 yard kick return touchdown to start the second half
  • A 51 yard return by Martez Shabazz after Ra'Shede Hageman blocked a field goal
  • An 89 yard interception return touchdown by Briean Boddy-Calhoun

47!

One of the best semi-recent developments in Gopher football has been the ongoing win streak over Nebraska (5, and hopefully further growing). Some of these wins have been blow outs. Others involve come from behind heroics and walk off 47 yard field goal.

46!

The Gophers have posted at least two 46-0 shutouts. The 46-0 beatdown of Iowa in 1944 helped everyone momentarily get the battle of Leyte Gulf out of their minds.

Then who could forget the 1903 46-0 laugher over Beloit College.
That was the third 46-0 score of 1903. They also defeated Lawrence University and Iowa State by the same margin that season. Shut out 13 of 15 opponents in the end.

Couple images for today on 46.

45!

The 2022 win over Wisconsin was the game I realized I must have way more Gopher football knowledge and insight compared to the rest of you when I reached the conclusion the Gophers were going to take a huge leap forward with the talents of Athan Kaliakmanis filling the QB role.

The Kaliakmanis/Brockington 45 yard TD late was the game’s biggest play.

September 21, 2013 - the Gophers dispatched San Jose State 43-24 in what was a weird weather game with an extended second half stoppage, if my memory serves me. EDIT: My memory did NOT serve me. Apparently the Gophers played SJSU two years in a row at home and the weather delay I was thinking of was actually the following season (also a win over the Spartans).

But, as we reach 43, I have to mention a good friend of mine, Tim Schwartz. Tim resides in the Gustavus Athletic Hall of fame after a stellar career in both football and baseball. Tim wore #43 for the Gusties football team and became both a captain, and MVP of both the football and baseball teams during his four years at GAC in the late 80's. Tim passed away in April after a rough bout with pancreatic cancer. I don't think I'll ever see a 43 jersey and not think of Tim.

Actually that was the next year! Storm rolled in during the second half and was delayed about an hour. I was at the game, stayed in the concourse during the storm and returned to the seats after to see David Cobb close things out.

Gophers won 24-7. It was a stormy day around the Midwest entirely. My dad and I went to the Buffalo Wild Wings across the street following the game and BTN kept checking on Michigan Vs. Utah, which was in a storm delay, too.

Also a couple photos for 43 -

Thank you for the clarification. I shot from the hip on that one. So did the Gophers play San Jose State at home two years in a row? That screwed my memory up.

I was at that game too. We had non-football-loving guests along and ended up going to a bar to watch the rest of the game during the weather delay.
