per this tweet from Katz:

"Meanwhile, Minnesota under Tubby Smith hasn't achieved the level of success. But Tubby has done wonders with this group without Mbakwe."

Go Gophers!!

Oh - this is so true! What do ya think Tubby Haters?

WTF is Katz talking about? Minnesota hasn't achieved the level of success, yet he has done wonders? Just say it was a nice win and leave it at that. No need to try and talk in circles about lack of success and wonderful coaching jobs.

As much as some of Tubby's in-game decisions frustrate me, I thought he coached this game very well! He adjusted defense and offense well, and kept the hot hands/energy guys in. Good win! Keep the run going!

Anyone surprised?

“@ESPNAndyKatz: Actually what I said was with this depleted team. RT @NeilGrand: @1500ESPN_Reusse Andy "ESPN" Katz is impressed with the job Tubby has done.”

Tubby has done well with this youthful group.
1. Played without their acknowledged best player, a senior.
2. Played many games with primarily 3 freshmen, 2 soph as well as a Rodney, Welch and RSIII.
3. We DID see IMPROVEMENT from the 5 young players as well as Rodney and Welch.

Thus, regardless of MN v. MI tomorrow, this team IS improving and to the Tubbinots, give credit where credit is due.

I would guess the Dark Side will make themselves scarce for awhile.

I wish these kinds of debates were capable of being talked about in the "shades of gray".

While I don't think Tubby has done a bad job with this team, he has done about exactly what I thought he would do (without Mbakwe). When Mbakwe went down, I thought that this team would finish in the bottom part of the Big 10 and that we wouldn't make the tournament. So for me, this team performed about exactly how I expected them to perform. So for me, I think saying he has done "wonders" is a bit overblown, just like it is a bit bizarre to talk about this team without acknowledging that our best player missed almost the entire year.

Either way, great win!

Correct. When you lose your All-American, you're not going to be incredibly successful. Katz was just saying that Tubby's work has been impressive with the group he has.

+1 Gray is not a shade that a whole lot of people see--whether it be the juvenile posts of Mr. "I Won't Accept Mediocrity" or the departed FOT on the other side.

He really has down a great job, I've been hating on Tubby for awhile but if you just step back and think of all the adversity he has dealt with, he has done a great job. Think of Ohio State without Sullinger. Michigan State without Green. That's what Minnesota's dealing with right now. There missing a (what was to be) a future first-round pick, and the leader of a young core. I'm pleased with this season, and can't even begin to start with how excited I am for next season with Andre leading the pack. Stop with all of the negativity and just sit back and enjoy the progress of our young team.

All of the tubby haters need to step back and think of what this team could be for tubby two years from now because when these young guns get their seasoning and experience they will give tubby his FIRST team of players he recruited that actually got to grow together without a bunch of the future or current core guys transferring out to different schools like we've seen plenty of times these past few years. That my friends is what I am excited to see. A Tubby Smith team where he gets 4 years from each key guy he recruits from start to finish. We haven't been able to see that yet, but I am very optimistic about this team accomplishing that and growing very well together!

What I've been saying all along! Thank you for realizing this gophs11!

I can't believe all the negativity surrounding Tubby! Our All-American got hurt and we had Cobbs, Colton, Royce, and Devoe transfer away!

Even if you put the blame on Tubby for Colton and Devoe, you still have to realize that this would be a very deep and talented team if we had Cobbs and Royce.

I just don't understand all the negativity.

Notre Dame without Abromaitis?

all praise Tubby! He was able to go 2-3 against Northwestern and Iowa without Mbakwe.

it will be interesting to see what the Tubbyites come up with next if this squad goes 6-12 in conference nexr year.

No, he wasn't. Working wonders implies he did something truly remarkable, such as getting the team to the NCAA Tournament. Finishing 10th in the Big Ten isn't remarkable and it doesn't reflect doing a wonderful job. He did a good job of getting the team to play today and they got a win as a result. That's where it should begin and end.

It would be interesting to see what this board would be like without whiners like you.

Look, I don't support his firing (not this year, anyway), but there was nothing remarkable about the job he did this season. We got exactly one win (perhaps two, counting tonight) that we weren't expected to get. We did no better (or, to be fair, worse) than a team in our situation should be expected to do.

What I have been saying for months. Young team - Tubby will coach them up!!

While I agree with this assessment, I think it's also important to note the flip side of that is also true.

While I don't think Tubby should be praised for "working wonders" with this team to finish 10th in the Big 10, I also don't think you can really say he did a bad job either. Once Mbakwe went down, I would say that this right where most unbias people would have predicted the team to be. So I agree, saying Tubby worked wonders is a stretch, but to blast him too much for this years team is a stretch too.

While I do agree to some extent, at what point do we start holding Tubby accountable for those departures? (not the injuries)

Next year we have experience, depth, and a balanced squad. Bob, do you really believe Kill and staff will be treated any differently on this board?

I actually think that's fair, that next year really is the test. But next year, I don't think the excuse about Royce and Cobbs is still viable.

No, I don't think they would, and I am really not calling for Tubby to be fired or anything. I am not really aligned with the Tubbinots at all. I just think when I honestly assess the situation, some of the blame for some of the departures falls at Tubby's feet. I think he's a good coach, I don't think he's a bad recruiter (like some people do), but I think if we aren't at least a .500 team next season, some of the criticism might be pretty fair.

As you know, I am a big fan of Coach Kill, but I will say that if the departure of key players becomes a regular thing with the football team, I will agree that his deserves some blame.

I like this statement.
