Andy Katz throws Norwood Teague under the bus for how firing was handled

I guess THE SCOUT! was right again about Teague!

No. Not at all. You called him a weasel for firing Tubby. Tubby deserved to be fired. Tubby got himself fired. He still should have been told asap no matter what lame excuse has been given.

Norwood is a very shady character. He treated Tubby like he was some low life buster. When Tubby was fired, he should've known immediately. Tubby had coaches meetings at 8am and everyone in the country knew he was fired before he did. It's ridiculous.

Another issue with Norwood is how there was a flurry of leaks about Tubby being fired right before Gavin Schilling's announcement date. I think it was pure sabotage. I'm not saying that Gavin was gonna come here, but it's funny that the rumors were flourishing right before he picked his college. Norwood wanted to make sure Tubby didn't have nothing to hang is hat on.

Also, Norwood had about 2 lies during his press conference where he contradicted himself. He as was asked if Tubby was surprised. He was said he was, then about 5 min later he said Tubby wasn't surprised. Then there was a contradiction he said about not talking about the job with other candidates. Then he turned right around and said he has had conversations with 'some people.' Norwood strikes me as a pompous arrogant guy. He's not an upstanding individual. What Katz wrote doesn't surprise me one bit. He might've done Tubby a big favor. If the U has trouble finding a coach, at least the fans will know why.

Nobody but a few people know what actually went down. Teague cannot just make a decision at 8am and call Tubby. He has to get appoval from Kaler, U lawyers, and the entire board of regents. This stuff takes time. If he tells Tubby he is fired, but then the regents don't approve it because of the buyout, then Teague is screwed. He had to cover all of his bases first. I am willing to bet that one of the regents leaked the info, and that is NOT Teague's fault.

By the way, I get a good laugh at all the idiotic posts this THE SCOUT! character posts. Just priceless!

1. We had just lost our third straight game when Schilling committed to Michigan St.. You don't think that had something to do with it?
2. Anyone can start a rumor, as evident by gopherhole the past few days.

This was decidedly less rude than Tubby's substitution patterns.

I know plenty that work for him and they all like him. Class act all the way.

Same, but this particular, one-off situation, if it played out like Katz wrote and like it sorta appeared, is really unfortunate and makes me a bit depressed. Tubby deserved better (in terms of being notified sooner). But we'll likely never know what the actual timeline was.

He also wrote about it today:

Tubby Smith and his staff had no idea they were about to be fired Monday morning as they sat in a staff meeting at 10 a.m. going over recruiting, offseason workout plans and evaluations of the Gophers' loss to Florida the previous day. Members of the Minnesota staff said they were sitting in the meeting when they started receiving text messages from coaching colleagues telling them they had been fired. Smith told them that he had to meet with the administration at 1 p.m. It was then, according to the staff, that Smith and ultimately the staff found out they had been fired. Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague obviously has the right to fire Smith and the staff. But he should have handled this differently. This was akin to how Seth Greenberg and his staff found out he was being fired a year ago at Virginia Tech. Greenberg was unaware that a decision had already been made. A news conference had been called but Greenberg wasn't informed of the details of the event. ADs need to make sure the staff knows before the public. That's called common courtesy.

Go Gophers!!

Very disappointing if this is what happened. I am guessing Teague needed approval from the board for the buyout. As soon as he started contacting multiple people the word leaked out. Teague should have told Tubby what he intended to do as soon as the decision was made. If Tubby missed the meeting with Teague, Teague should have met with him as soon as Tubby reached the school.

Just takes a little effort to show Tubby the respect he deserves. No excuses.

If that is how I went down...that's pretty asinine!

Yeah the Tubby haters were out for blood, and Teague handed tubby to them on a silver platter...

I still think someone other than Teague simply didn't keep his big mouth shut...told it to a friend who told it to a friend who got a hold of twitter ...someone needs to be spanked. I think the other issue with this is it was brewing for a while and someone finally said it was time, before they should have.

I am so tired of people feeling sorry for these coaches in major college basketball. He just got fired and is getting a check for about 3.3 million to not work. Cry me a river.

If Tubby is such a good coach and there was such a miscarriage of justice, he should have a new job at a big school in about a week.

Anybody that has watched this team for six years knows the best thing that could happen was getting rid of Tubby.

I don't feel sorry for Tubby for getting fired. I didn't feel sorry for Mason when he got fired. I wouldn't feel sorry for J Robinson in the event he got fired, but he would probably blow up one of the administration buildings so there would likely be collateral damage.

BUT, there is a right way and a wrong way to do it and if Teague did it the way Katz described, it probably could have been done more smoothly. Again, the move is justified. This isn't about liking Tubby or not liking Tubby. It's about doing things the right way.

So when I started this thread, I wasn't even really concerned with how it went down (e.g. if there was a leak, if NT could have handled it differently). Like many have said, it probably didn't go down exactly how NT wanted it to. Also, Tubby is a big boy and he's getting a nice fat check, etc. Let's move on.

The point I was trying to make is how Katz and the national media have demonized the U. It sucks. I guess these guys build relationships with coaches and all it took was for Tubby to text him the words "I had no idea" and they run with it without even focusing on the other part of the story (i.e. the fact that it was justified, that NT has a plan, it was bold and decisive unlike our last regime)

thoughts?

Tim Brando is blasting Minnesota and UCLA again on twitter tonight.

Do you know how many football games we could've bought ourselves out of for $3.3 million?

Fire Teague

Teague has botched this whole coaching situation. The way he handled Tubby's firing was inexcusable and classless. The way the new coaching search is going is just chaotic. He has to make a move soon or we stand to lose recruits and current players. Now that Shaka is off the table he better bring in Flip or I am selling my season tickets.

He handled the Tubby thing exactly right. He moved on right away. On Sunday night, very few of us thought Shaka was realistic and we were all ok with him firing Tubby.

This is how real ADs work, they go fast and they don't waste time.

How would you know if the coaching search is chaotic, it's been two days!

No. I'd rather have Tubby over the garbage they are talking about bringing in. Anthony Grant? Come on.

I don't like how the firing happened. Not that it happended.

Wait till we have the hire, then bash it. Should only be a few weeks.

A little premature, but Teague is on the verge of a PR nightmare. Firing Tubby so quickly got the fan base excited in anticipation of a big move. Three days later, it looks like the football coaching search debacle all over again. If Teague settles on a candidate like Grant or Bennett it will not sit well and many will wish Tubby were still here.

Who is "they"? Do you mean all of the "journalists" and "insiders" who are telling us who is likely the coach?? No one knows who Norwood is hiring. You might as well wait until we actually know who the coach is before you go off the deep end.
