Andy Katz: Gophers making play for Fred Hoiberg & Brad Stevens, Mark Cronin on list

I'd rather live somewhere nice than live in a dump town like Milwaukee just because its closer to Chicago and Madison....It's not like Buzz is thinking..."If I leave Milwaukee, no more 1 hour drives to hang out in Madison or go to a Cubs game." - Milwaukee is a dumpy town...it's Cleveland without a crappy NFL franchise.

You act like all of Milwaukee is a dump. That is not true. There are a lot of nice areas, especially if you have money. The city is only going to get nicer with a number of projects and revitalizations going on, this being the most significant: http://www.jsonline.com/business/la...n-land-for-development-eo93sv2-196948891.html

And the proximity to other major metros has to do with recruiting more than recreation. Being on the outskirts of Chicago has it's perks (obviously). Madison has also had some very good players, especially at Memorial (Wesley Matthews, Vander Blue, Keaton Nankivil, Jeronne Maymon, Mike Nelson most recently).

Never heard of those last two...maybe you should move there..I've driven through Milwaukee several times and was thoroughly unimpressed. Driving into Chicago is more stress than its worth...

I would love Stevens, but I don't think he's realistic. I'm not all that high on Hoiberg, but I'd take him. Cronin does nothing for me.

I'd love Hoiberg but I think he's at his dream job. Just don't see him leaving Ames

I agree, but Minneapolis/St. Paul isn't very close to any other metro. Milwaukee is pretty centrally located. I think the twin cities area is very nice with a ton of stuff going for it, but I'd rather live near Milwaukee because of it's proximity to Chicago and Madison.

Yeah, I have this discussion with a good friend of mine all the time. I guess I don't care that we aren't a short drive away from other metro areas. Minneapolis offers everything I need, and I don't really like to travel either. I would never sacrifice where I "live" for ease of being able "visit" other places. To each their own...back to the topic at hand.

Can any of the young hot-shot names on that list pretty much guarantee even .500 finishes in Big Ten play? Remember, Tubby was 15-1 until Big Ten play got in the way. It is TOUGH to win too much over 50% of the Big Ten games unless your program's name is Michigan State, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio State...over the course of time add Illinois to that list too.

I certainly do hope that our new norwood is being VERY nice to Flip. Our new norwood had probably better not take too much for granted with Flip. Who knows, maybe Flip would turn...or has turned our new norwood down already.

The thing about Flip: he could be a great transition coach for the Gophers for the next five to ten years. Don't underestimate him. I'm pretty sure he could help fill some of those unsold seats in the BARN. I also think he would be just the one to get the new practice facility built. He has probably been around watching the Metro High School players more than most have.

I fear our new norwood may lose a few more flirtations with this so-called "A" list that the media is shopping around. Just by being on these lists...some of these guys who have had a year or a couple of moderate success can watch their contracts grow fatter as the schools they are at scurry to extend their contracts and throw a few more perks at their feet.

Perhaps that is what our new norwood's villa 7 is really all about: a network of young coaches who have experienced a bit of success who get their names mentioned as 'targets" and their current schools jack up the terms of their contracts and extend them into hopefully lifetime contract offers.

I really DO wonder exactly how well some of these youngsters would do competing against the big six in the B1G conference? You are kidding yourself if you think any of them would come into the conference right now and solidify themselves in a top 3 or top 4 type of position. Maybe a 6 or a 7 or an 8 or a 9...and with more programs coming into the conference, maybe a top 10 type position.

I'd say our new norwood had better start courting Flip and HOPE that Flip won't turn him down. Who knows...it may be too late already...

With the vendetta that Gopherwarrior appeared to have had for Trevor for leaving Marquette I can only imagine what would happen if we landed their coach.

I don't think we will of course but:

God help us.

One good season for a conference doesn't make up for a decade of mediocrity at best. I understand the struggle of B10 fans to get respect in anything as of late, but you all are really going overboard with a single basketball season. I'm sure you'll refute that, but if you're interested you can look the numbers up yourself.

With respect to Stevens or Hoiberg heading to Minnesota, those feel like pipe dreams.

I think Flip would be the best choice regardless of other candidates, he's at least as knowledgable as the Smarts and Stevens as far as basketball and because of closeness and passion to the U I think he would bring more to the table.

I'd love Hoiberg but I think he's at his dream job. Just don't see him leaving Ames

I know you all know Fred isn't leaving Ames but if there was any doubt realize that he turned down Lute Olson's Arizona Wildcats and Tom Osborne's Nebraska Cornhuskers in the '90's to stay in Ames. Is Minnesota a better job? I think so. Will Fred leave Ames? Only for a pro job and after he's gotten ISU to where he's comfortable leaving it in the hands of a capable replacement.

I lived there for two years when I was going to law school. So yeah, I know first hand, unlike you since you've only "driven through" the city. So stop lecturing me on what Milwaukee is like.

And here is Jeronne Maymon: 4-star forward that played at Marquette and Tennessee but had to sit out this season with an injury. A very good double-double guy like Trevor. http://rivals.yahoo.com/basketballrecruiting/basketball/recruiting/player-Jeronne-Maymon-54891

And Mike Nelson was a very good guard that was a starter on the North Dakota State in 2007-2008 when they made the tournament for the first time. http://www.gobison.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=2400&ATCLID=77293

shaka was number one choice... henceforth another contract bump this week. Teague bet the farm on him and lost, now it is start from ground zero ! nice job Norwood
Stevens was always the #1 target. The Goetz connection is very real. She didn't just oversee basketball budget and financial aid, she was the compliance point person and effectively Brad Stevens' consigliere. He placed more trust in her than anyone in that program. Graves leaving doesn't mean Stevens won't, just that he he didn't see himself being tapped as a successor (ps Graves sold his house in January and was talking to South 'Bama in February; it's not like Brad's been running his mouth to everyone on staff about Norwood's overtures).

Flip has always made the most sense...always. Plus our chance at the big three goes up big time. Bring out the big guns!

So you're saying there's a chance.....

There's a chance. He doesn't strike me as someone who would like the pressure-cooker at a blue-blood program. And he has the demeanor of Bud Grant. Minnesotans would love him forever.

Been my feelings all along. We have heard he longs for the IU job, but with Creans success, I don't see him leaving for anything in the near future. He has a relationship with someone in the AD department and I would think, like most coaches, he wants a challenge. Heck, he's young enough so that IF he failed, he still has a future. UCLA was never an option, he would lose his mind. Minnesota? Huge leap of faith, but he would be a B1G coach.

Maybe you should have gotten out of the car. Milw. is a good city. Mpls. is better, but there isn't anything wrong with Milw.

If this is true, I appreciate the ambition Norwood but let's come back down to earth now. Give it to Flip and let's move on. It's a risk-reward game.

the way things are going they might end up with the Anoka Ramsey Community college coach.

I'd take any of the three to be honest, even Cronin. The problem is that all 3 have very strong connections to their current job. Stevens is from Indianapolis and has coached his entire career at Butler. Hoiberg is frome Ames, went to ISU and is currently somewhat of an idol there. And Cronin is from the Cinci area.

So, we should roll the dice on our own hometown guy, Flip!

It's been like three days, if he thinks there's a chance this could happen, I'd be quite pissed if he didn't invest some time into it to see if it'll happen. I don't care if it's a long shot, it's not like he has to have a new coach in 3 days or something.

I think Adelman retires this year to take care of his wife and Hoiberg becomes the next Twolves coach.

I don't see him being a perfect fit here. He seems too much like an NBA guy and there are too many NBA whispers with him, I don't want to be going through another coaching search again in 2 years. . . . WAIT . . . we could have more coaching search threads in 2 years, I'll go with Hoiberg.

Haha well said!

The #1 reason I want Flip is because it is very low risk and high reward. It is not a gamble, I am 100% confident that even if he "fails" as a head coach it will be on the exact same level we are at right now. I think Flip can take us to the next level and would love to see him be given an opportunity.

I think Hoiberg would be a fine candidate, but seriously, when Iowa State hired him, he never coached before, yet alone in college. Yes, Flip hasn't coached in college in a long time, and none of us know how he will be able to recruit, but the guy can flat out coach. If he couldn't coach he wouldn't have been given 3 different jobs in the NBA over the course of 16 years.
