Andy Katz: Gophers making play for Fred Hoiberg & Brad Stevens, Mark Cronin on list

Darren Wolfson: The best Brad Stevens connection to #Gophers isn't w/ Teague or Ellis. It's w/ new Sr. assoc. AD Beth Goetz. Still seems like a long-shot.

Remember, Goetz was the associate AD in charge of basketball at Butler. She probably had more direct contact with Stevens than the AD.

Anyone who thinks Brad Stevens will come here is delusional. And no one leaves their Alma mater unless its a tiny crap school...and even sometimes when its not a crap school (there's a reason Huggins shat on KSU for West Virginia).

I should have known NT didn't have anyone in the bag before during Tubby. Here comes Monson 2.0. I can't wait.

Agreed...my greatest fear all along is will we get an upgrade or Dan Monson again...sounds like an upgrade isn't in the cards. If its Grant, we should have kept Tubby.

Brad Stevens would be a moron to leave butler for Minnesota. It doesn't even make sense to leave his current situation to walk into this *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# show.

To be fair, I have no idea on the inner workings at Butler but the AD was head basketball coach of the Bulldogs for 11 years before becoming head coach at Nebraska for six.

Familiarity with Goetz would certainly be in the plus column as is Stevens agreeing to be a guest on Teague's radio show a few weeks back. They certainly know each other.

I love this set up a list of candidates some media guy thinks are on the list, then when they find they are happy where they are, the money is minor factor, and the search goes on it reflects on our search? Just because SI, ESPN, or some local scribe prints a list, its nothing more than their list. Teague has said nothing about candidates, and he shouldn't. Relax.

I'd take any of the three to be honest, even Cronin. The problem is that all 3 have very strong connections to their current job. Stevens is from Indianapolis and has coached his entire career at Butler. Hoiberg is frome Ames, went to ISU and is currently somewhat of an idol there. And Cronin is from the Cinci area.

Marcus Fuller also tweeted this morning the short list is down to Stevens or Hoiberg.

Buzz Williams will be added to those two names if he loses tonight. I believe Williams can have the job if he wants it. However, if he wins tonight, hard to see him moving.

Stevens would have been my number one choice overall but I really can't see him leaving Butler.

God if you go read the Marquette forum or any of the schools who's coach is on our "list" you would think we have the absolute worse program in the country. Its kinda pathetic and funny at the same time. What some people don't know could fill a warehouse.

I'm a Gopher fan and a Marquette fan so I can see both sides of the Buzz Williams discussion. And I have to say the Gopher fans that think Buzz will come here are delusional. With that being said, the Marquette fans that think Buzz won't leave no matter what are also delusional.

And visiting opposing teams' boards should be more of an eye opening experience than laughable experience, that is how most of the country views us. Just look at the *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# we took when it was announced Tubby was fired.

What makes Minnesota more appealing than Marquette? Butler? VCU?

The airport is about all I can think of...we are behind the 8ball in a big way and our national perception is we are a joke. I find it hilarious that so many people think we can snatch a big name like buzz or Shaka or Stevens when we don't have much to offer right now. Lets be real!

I truly am a Marquette fan as well (wearing their hoodie now),for some personal reasons (relationships) and because I love the way Buzz coaches. But, growing up a Gopher fan, they will always be my first allegiance.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but maybe a little hurt.

That being said. I was just on the Alabama board and they were discussing Grant leaving and one said he came to gopherhole for the first time and went on the football board and came away with this:

"On the football board, there was a thread about our game against Wisconsin (2015). I never knew there was a Wisconsin-Minnesota rivalry, but it looks like we will have Gopher fans in our corner that day."

We sometimes forget we are in a small little part of the planet and OUR news/information doesn't translate everywhere.

shaka was number one choice... henceforth another contract bump this week. Teague bet the farm on him and lost, now it is start from ground zero ! nice job Norwood

The city you'd be located in. I won't speak for these gentlemen, but that's the most important thing I look for in a job. But, if they don't care about living conditions then I agree that we are not a more attractive job than the others listed.

I actually really like Milwaukee. You're also on the doorstep to Chicago.

Yep, and only about an hour from Madison and 4.5 hours from the twin cities. Very close to a number of nice cities. Also a lot of airport options for direct flights.

Living conditions? It's obvious to me Minneapolis isn't highly thought of in the college coaching communities...otherwise we would have great coaches already

"Living conditions" move pretty far down on the list when you're talking seven-figure salaries. You can live quite comfortably almost anywhere on the planet when you have those resources at your disposal.

Milwaukee is a decent town to visit and get drunk in...I'll give it that. It's no Minneapolis, though.

Outside of the South, I agree with you. I'm not saying our city will draw any of these candidates...I just brought it up because sometimes a guy's decision to take a job can be for various reasons that aren't obvious to outsiders.

I grew up in Madison and reside here now. I graduated for the U of MN in 1994. I spend a lot of time in Milwaukee as well. I think Marquette is a great school. With that being said...let's face it...Milwaukee is a dump compared to the twin cities.

I think the draws to this job are: 1. Big Ten 2. Mpls and St. Paul make us a top 7 metro areas in the country (behind only NYC, Austin, Boston, SF, La, Seattle and Portland) 3. Williams arena 4. The talented junior class 5. a supportive AD

We shouldn't sell ourselves short. Would you rather be in Ames, Milwaukee (fun town but has issues), Indianapolis, or Minneapolis???
Yes, we do need practice facilities soon, but to me this is a top 30 job in the country.

I agree, but Minneapolis/St. Paul isn't very close to any other metro. Milwaukee is pretty centrally located. I think the twin cities area is very nice with a ton of stuff going for it, but I'd rather live near Milwaukee because of it's proximity to Chicago and Madison.

You're not factoring in the bike lanes. Buzz & Brad both ride around in recumbent bicycles and are in constant danger in almost every other city except Portland.

I would love Stevens, but I don't think he's realistic. I'm not all that high on Hoiberg, but I'd take him. Cronin does nothing for me.

I'll give you Marquette's draws:

1. No football. 2. VERY supportive school $$ wise. 3. Sweet16 (or better) team returning next year. 4. Top 5-10 recruiting class coming in 5. VERY good in-state talent over the next few years, especially in the Milwaukee area. 6. New Big East conference will offer more stability than the old Big East. 7. (probably should be higher) Marquette taking a risk on Buzz when it seemed pretty risky to do so. 7. Less sports (college and pro) to compete with than a place like Minneapolis

I'd rather live somewhere nice than live in a dump town like Milwaukee just because its closer to Chicago and Madison....It's not like Buzz is thinking..."If I leave Milwaukee, no more 1 hour drives to hang out in Madison or go to a Cubs game." - Milwaukee is a dumpy town...it's Cleveland without a crappy NFL franchise.
