Andy Katz: Gophers making play for Fred Hoiberg & Brad Stevens, Mark Cronin on list

per Katz:

"Minnesota coveted VCU’s Shaka Smart, but his former boss, current Golden Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague, couldn’t convince Smart to come to the Twin Cities (he should know Smart is loyal to VCU) for the head-coaching job from which Tubby Smith was just fired. According to sources, the Gophers have now turned their attention to Iowa State’s Fred Hoiberg and Butler’s Brad Stevens. We’ll see, but I’ll be shocked if either were to go to Minnesota. Hoiberg is the Mayor in Ames (it's his alma mater) and has Iowa State in a good place after back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances. If Hoiberg were to leave for Minnesota, the NBA's Timberwolves, not the Gophers, would make more sense. I can’t see Stevens bolting, either, with how much he loves the Butler way and working for AD Barry Collier. Stevens can have a lifetime contract at Butler, much like Mark Few has at Gonzaga. If they can't convince either of these two, the Gophers may make a play for Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin. But Cronin is from Cincinnati and loves his gig, too. The only reason he might listen is if he sees the need to go to a school in a more stable conference."

Go Gophers!!

Haha. Please don't let this turn into the football coach search.

I think Hoiberg would be a very good hire, but I don't see him leaving Iowa State. This news will probably result in a nice raise for Fred at Iowa State when they scramble to keep him.

Anyone who thinks Brad Stevens will come here is delusional. And no one leaves their Alma mater unless its a tiny crap school...and even sometimes when its not a crap school (there's a reason Huggins shat on KSU for West Virginia).

I should have known NT didn't have anyone in the bag before during Tubby. Here comes Monson 2.0. I can't wait.

I can't see Fred leaving Iowa St. for any other college coaching gig. You can make the call, but it won't happen. Cronin doesn't interest me either. I do have my money on Stevens in the pickem thread. If you were Teague, would you give Pitino a call? I know he's oily, but he does produce results. I know, pipe dream.

Might as well make a play for coach K while we are at it. No way would either Hoiberg or Stevens agree to come here.

I'm a yes on Stevens and Hoiberg and a no on Cronin. There could be a small chance that Fred actually prefers the Twin Cities to Ames enough to make the move. He also could see the relative lack of success Greg McDermott had at ISU as compared with his other jobs, Hoiberg might feel success is not sustainable long term.

Cronin, I love Cinninanti, I plan on retiring here, Its not about money ...It's about being happy

So who interviewed yesterday? That is the question that needs to be answered. Clearly it is someone who is not playing now and though I don't see any of these guys being real canidates it would be interesting if one did. I think over the last week its clear that the media along with the fans have no clue.

If they want any of those guys they'd better get the checkbook out, they'd probably have to overpay to get them.

Hoiberg HC and Flip Associate HC

Hope Norwood knows what he is doing. I am sure we will find someone good, but this could be embarrassing for a bit if we keep getting turned down.

And Barreiro did say yesterday, fwiw, that his sources told him that Stevens was more likely to come here than Shaka. 0.2% is more likely than 0.1%.

TBH.... I don't think Teague has tipped his hand and the national media folks are grasping at straws just throwing names out there. There have been way too many names thrown out for them all to have been interviewed.

True. Nobody knows for a fact that his #1 isn't still in play. The only information anyone has about us "pursuing" Shaka is a from a dude on a board called "RichmondInsider".

Thinking #1 isn't any of these guys. Get ready for a surprise.

USA Today said both Minnesota and UCLA reached out to Shaka.

Go Gophers!!

Marcus Fuller also tweeted this morning the short list is down to Stevens or Hoiberg.

has teague ever made a bad hire for a mens bball coach? has he ever hired an established HC?

Well, I suppose there's a chance a naked, phone-lacking Kate Upton has her car break down in front of your house too.

Pretty sure his only two hires have been Anthony Grant and Shaka Smart. So no, he hasn't made a bad hire, and no he hasn't hired an established coach. VCU isn't on the same level as Minnesota though, so I don't think that's relevant.

YES!!!!! Please let me know what time - I'll ask my wife to take the kids out for ice cream so I'm alone to help Kate.

Go Gophers!!

Darren Wolfson: The best Brad Stevens connection to #Gophers isn't w/ Teague or Ellis. It's w/ new Sr. assoc. AD Beth Goetz. Still seems like a long-shot.

Correct. Still a long shot IMO, but anything is possible.
