Andre Hollins

inside scoop

I think Hollins is #20 and its funny he is the only smiling in the team picture.

Memphis Tiger fan here. Thought I'd add a little more insight into Andre.

Andre goes to the same high school, and went to the same middle school, as my kids go. While these are public high schools, which are generally not great in Memphis, he is in an optional program, which is for top students throughout the city. He has been in the optional program since elementary school.

I quoted the post above because of the comment about Andre's being the only one smiling. That's because he is always smiling. And it isn't fake, just how he is. My son says even walking through the halls at school, he always has a smile on face. He is genuinely a great kid and will be an ambassador of your program from day one.

As for his game, he isn't a pure point guard. He hasn't played point guard in high school, and he isn't again this year. The past 3 years, Joe Jackson (top 20 2010 now at Memphis) and Julian Burton (Missouri State) played the point, and this year White Station has a junior playing point.

Andre had a disappointing junior season. White Station won the state championship his sophomore year, with Andre playing a major role. But he didn't really progress his game last year. This year, he has taken the role of leader, and his scoring has gone up (21ppg so far). Still not consistent in his outside shot. But he has pure instincts for the game so that with maturity and real practice (which he doesn't get at school) he should develop into a very solid college player.

Tubby must have done a real good sales job with him, because prior to his visit, he seemed to be headed to Stanford. Harvard had been on him ever since Amaker took over.

Andre and his White Station team face a tough test tonight against Memphis Melrose, who won the state last year. Melrose is currently the #1 high school team in the nation. From what I've seen of White Station this year, it won't be pretty. but they are district rivals (this is a tournament game) so who knows.

Andre

Thanks for the post chatt, it's much appreciated.

Good post, thanks for the info. So do you feel he looks like a quality D1 player?

Chatt Tiger - the Gophers have potentially more PT avlbl at PG than at SG, hence the interest on how Andre might pan out there.

Has anyone around memphis remarked about Tubby's recruiting success around there? It was never a hotbed of Gopher recruiting before although Randy Carter did well here in the early-mid 1990s.....

Stanford took a commitment from Chasson Randle of Rock Island IL ahead of Hollins.

Hollins made All-State and All-State Tourney teams as Jr - not bad for disappointing year with HS A-A teammate. Hollins made several All-AAU teams this past summer.

There will be a Uni Watch entry for the Hollins' NOB next year.

Will it be: Au. Hollins and An. Hollins, or will they go the middle initial route?

How about Fr Hollins and So Hollins next year. So Hollins and Jr Hollins the following year.;)

and jr. hollins w sr. hollins, maybe tubby can find a freshman hollins at PF/C? wishful thinking :)

Tubby is familiar with the area from his time at KY-U. Plus, I think the inroads to Austin Hollins had more to do with Austin's dad, and not so much Memphis.

Andre probably has the basketball IQ to transition to PG, but not sure how long it will take. With the "system" that White Station runs, he brings the ball up the floor, along with a lot of other guys.

and FOT, I watched a lot of White Station games last year. Andre did not play at the caliber of an all-state player. He was a big key in White Station's state championship run as a sophomore, but he didn't really improve his game last year.

and yes, I do think he'll be a quality DI player. I would have been happy to have him here, but a mutual decision was made early on that he wasn't going to sign here. We are very short on scholarships next year, but I think Andre was always going to leave for college, regardless.

THanks for the info ChattTiger. It's always nice to get the inside scoop on guys, especially when it's good news.

Regardless of you watching the games, the voters put him on All-State and All-State Tourney teams in 2010.

Clipped:

Hollins, a 6-2, 190-pound guard from Memphis, Tenn., averaged 15.2 points as a junior for White Station High School, one of the strongest high school programs in Tennessee. He will begin his senior season with just under 2,000 career points.

"I am very thankful for the opportunity to play for a great program and coach," said Hollins. "I want to thank all of my family, friends, coaches, and the Minnesota Basketball staff for their support. I am elated to be a Gopher."

Ranked as the 26th, 30th and 40th-best shooting guard in the country by ESPN, Scout and Rivals, respectively, Hollins led the Spartans to a 28-9 record and to the Tennessee Class AAA State Championship game. He is a reigning TSWA Class AAA All-State selection as well as a member of the 2010 Tennessee Class AAA State Tournament team.

Hollins, who is a member of the National Honor Society and carries a grade point average of more than 4.0, chose the Gophers over Auburn, Harvard, Mississippi and Stanford. He plans to enroll in the prestigious Carlson School of Management at Minnesota.

"Andre Hollins is a very talented and athletic player. I think he fills that need that we have at the point guard position," said Smith. "He is a big, physical guard that can defend multiple positions. One of the good things about Andre is that he has the mental IQ to run a team. He has speed, great hands, strength and love for the game."

Thanks for the info Tiger. Great to hear firsthand info about out of state recruits. Sounds like he's got a good attitude, should serve him well under Tubby.

I will add my WOW as well. I was hoping that Hollins would meet or exceed expectations this year and he is off to a great start. Congratulations Andre on a big win last night and best wishes to you and your White Station teammates against the Central Warriors tonight.

Andre fouls out --lost in OT in Finals of Martin Luther King Tournament Championship

Central 60, White Station 53 (OT)

Central, and Andre Appelwhite II, fought through some late struggles and scrapped to a 60-53 overtime win over White Station in Saturday night's Martin Luther King Jr. Tournament championship game at Melrose.

Earlier, White Station's girls (6-0) used a strong third-quarter defensive push to beat Craigmont (5-1), 64-36, in the MLK girls title game.

The Warriors (4-0) had a 50-46 lead -- and Spartans' scoring leader Andre Hollins on the bench after fouling out with 3:30 left in regulation.

The Spartans (5-1), who had upended top-ranked Melrose, 63-50, in the semifinals Friday, rallied on a nifty jumper in traffic by freshman Leron Black with just under two minutes to play. A minute later, junior Nino Johnson took a feed from Jalen Thompson to make it a 50-50 game.

Applewhite, who like teammate Blake Johnson scored 16 points on the night, missed a layup at the end of regulation. And after going 2-for-5 from the foul line in the fourth quarter, he missed his first three free throw attempts in OT. But after a layup by Central center Cameron Clear (10 points) broke the tie with 2:18 left to play, Appelwhite would hit six of his final eight free throws to seal the game.

"You can't dwell on what happened. You've just got to go to the next play," said the 6-6 junior, who used a series of three baseline drives late in the third quarter to give his team a 41-38 edge.

Johnson hit several key three-pointers on the night. Star junior Jarnell Stokes had 13 points and earned tournament MVP honors, though he said, "Tonight I'm just thankful for my teammates."

A three-pointer by Craigmont sophomore Candace Davis had tied the girls game at 31 two minutes into the second half. The next eight minutes, they were smothered by a 19-0 Spartan run paced by eight of senior Breanna Ridgell's 20 points.

"The kids really kicked it into gear on defense, and we started attacking the basket more," said White Station coach Darryl Durham, who also got 17 points from senior Jasmine Settles.

So, do you tiger fans enjoy going undefeated in conference play? just a question ive always wanted to ask. id think id get boring

no, we'd much rather be in a conference where we have to battle to stay at the top. but we have a President who doesn't care about athletics, especially football, and an athletic director who doesn't want to do any hard work, only smooze with the big money donors. So instead of capitalizing on a good run in football from 2004-6 with the all time all purpose yards leader in the history of college football, they refused to build the football program by investing in it. And we are now one of the worst teams in DIA. And since conference realignment is purely football/BCS driven, we are stuck.

We'll find out Tuesday where we stand basketball-wise this year when we play KU @ MSG. Unfortunately, our inexperience and lack of upper classmen leadership I think at this point in the season means we don't have much of a chance.

This maybe a silly question......

Isn't it Memphis State University???? That's how I always remember it being called during the William Bedford and Penny Hardaway years. Now it appears to be University of Memphis? Did that change?

Yes. On July 1, 1994, after years of research and surveys, Memphis State University changed its name again, to the University of Memphis - a name change inspired by Ms. Christina Trinh, wife of former president Carpenter.

One of my favorite players of all time growing up as a little runt was Keith Lee. What ever happened to him? Lee and Wayman Tisdale (along with 1981-82 Gopher team) instilled my love for college hoops as a little guy.
