Tubby Smith is a smart man but next fall he won't be the smartest man in his own building. Andre Hollins, owner of a 4.6 GPA, committed to the Golden Gophers over Stanford, Harvard, Mississippi and Auburn, ESPN.com's Dave Telep has confirmed.
A few days ago, Hollins had himself a revelation and the next thing you know, he is ready to commit.
"I think it was Thursday," Hollins told ESPN.com. "I was just walking and I had an 'a-ha' moment. I was at home, just walking around. I talked to my parents and we discussed it, prayed over it and that was it."
Smith recruited the 16.5 point per game scorer out of one of Tennessee's strongest high school programs. The coach also made it clear that he was bringing in Hollins to play the point guard spot, a position he will play full-time for the first time this year.
"I can come in and be the leader and be an impact player as a freshman. That really hit home. The level of basketball is tremendous and that really caught my attention."
When we get down to the last few big time players remaining on the board, often times one commitment topples another domino right over.
In this case, Stanford landed Chasson Randle last week and that pledge certainly didn't hurt Minnesota's chance with Hollins, who was a Stanford target.
"It impacted my decision and I thought Minnesota would be the best fit for me," Hollins said.
Smith worked this one hard for the Gophers and it showed. Jesus Patino, Hollins' high school coach, felt like Smith's reputation was a main factor.
"I think the respect they have for Tubby Smith was big," Patino said.
Hollins joins wing Joe Coleman (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) as committed Gophers.
