Amelia blog: After six losses in eight games, is Minnesota in quicksand?

I haven't mentioned the Illinois game or said he is a bad coach or anything all I said his tough style bring players down without picking them up and it affecting their psyche I still think they can make a run in the big ten tourney and NCAA the 2009-2010 team is the only Gopher team to play in a big 10 tourney final and as far as im taking stuff from other pol I have only been a member for less than a week I just started reading this sight because I follow it on twitter and if you think players all love coach you are crazy but coaches are not here to b a players best friend so if tubby is tough on them they can't respond by being soft I saw tubby call Westbrook out continuously then he came out and destroyed Wisconsin he called hoff and Nolen out and the responded well its all bout the players he's bringing in and there mental toughness

Love your insight GopherPlaya... might not agree with all you say, but you do have good points. I agree on tough love. Not all coaches dish it out and Tubby is obviously old school. I think the key is how this group responds to it..we hopefully all agree that we would like this team to rise up to the coaches demands and make a run and get that mojo back. Time will tell.

GopherPlaya.. if in fact you are close to some former players (or current?).. do you have insight in how players and family view Tubby. I always think he comes across as a guy who is going to try and take care of a recruit while he is away...something a parent probably would want... is that a load a crap or is Tubby/Donna a father/mother to the players? Anyway, whether you are a friend of the program, the friend of AJ Barkers mom, a former player or whatever.. thanks for the insight.

Either that. Or I'm actually not a knee jerk fan who wants blood after every loss. I'd much rather be a fan that rides out an entire season before I start crapping in my own wheaties. I've pointed out several times that I'd be very disappointed if this season doesn't finish well, meaning tourney and winning in tourney. I see no point in trying to throw my program under the bus when the season is not even done. Im just not wired that way and im glad for that. It's obvious that we have talent. It's also obvious we are playing below our talent now. We were probably playing above it earlier. Maybe there is middle ground. Or maybe we should string up everyone associated with the basketball program before the season is over. This program is a lot better than it was 6 years ago but not as good as it can be. I'm more than willing to call for a new coach if we miss the tourney or fall flat from here on out. But perhaps we won't. This is a good team with good wins and we've been in most games. Let's get into the tourney and see what happens against lesser competition. I know. It's so hard to ask for folks who basically use every 5 minutes of a game as a measuring point.

I am not suggesting stringing anyone up. Nor throwing the program under the bus. Nor wanting blood after a loss. Nor using the tv timeouts as a measuring stick.

Those are very easy and convenient ways to avoid discussing what has been the standard for the program for the past 5, nearly 6 seasons.

This team has plenty of talent to compete for the conf title. Lots of experience, lots of upperclassmen that tubby recruited. Those are the facts of the situation. When those facts are presented, the excuses come out.

Based on the way the team has played lately combined with the way the team finished the last couple seasons, it doesnt appear a top conf finish will happen, barring a huge turnaround.

Results are what matters. Thus far, the results of tubby have not been very good, imo. Slightly better than Monson, based on winning some non-con games.

Remember - Monson was a crappy coach, based on the hole genius'. And tubby's results are not much better than the crappy coach......

Most players say he like night and day off the court from how he is on the court/practice and parents tend to love him that's why I said I rather he go out on his own terms instead of fired

I have been pulling so hard for him to succeed here because he's such a decent, honorable man, very likable, squeaky clean, got his priorities straight about school and balance. He's exactly the type of guy you want leading your program if he can make it happen from a competitive standpoint, and there was no reason to believe he couldn't. As God is my witness, I thought this was going to be the year where the worm finally turned and Tubby started to write his legacy here, which would eventually end with him retiring from what would be considered a fully successful tenure. Although there is still hope for something like that, the way the season has turned is so discouraging, not just for wins and losses and the enjoy-ability of the on-court product, but also for what it means for a coach I like and admire.
