All Things "Top 5" Thread (Movies, TV Shows, Cities, Countries, Actors, Beers, Restaurants, Athletes, Sporting Events etc.)

It's a 1980 British film with Bob Hoskins in the lead where he is trying to set up a major deal with US gangsters. Unfortunately for him, his outfit inadvertently runs afoul of the IRA at the same time and they don't forgive and forget.

Hoskins gives a riveting performance. Unfortunately, like many British films, you have to struggle a bit to understand the dialog for about the first 15 minutes or so. The film also includes Pierce Brosnan in a very early small part as an Irish assassin.

Oh yeeeaahh....that one. Randomly grabbed that from a video store in the early 90's. Damn. I'm always a fan of gangster movies that don't glamorize the lifestyle. This one certainly didn't and as usual Bob Hoskins was great.

Top 5 Movies you Loved but Could Only Watch Once. Let's hear your list of movies that were great but hit you so hard you will never watch them again.

1. Requiem for a Dream
2. A Clockwork Orange
3. Blue Velvet
4. Sauna. Not a huge horror fan anyway but I'm choosing this one because the plot was unique.
5. Cavalry. I saw this one in the theater. Brendan Gleeson is fantastic in everything he does, in this case playing a priest in a small Irish town trying to figure out who plans to kill him over the Church's sexual abuse scandal.
At the end credits there is no music. The theater was dead silent until I heard a couple women behind me start crying. Everyone shuffled out in silence. I got to my car and had to sit and listen to the radio for a few minutes and pull myself together and make sure I could drive safely.

We were just going to watch Clockwork tonight. I've seen it at least five times.
I've seen Blue Velvet at least four times.
Requiem twice.
I hope there isn't anything wrong with me.
#4 and 5 = never heard of.

I'd put Schindler's List on my list of one.
It is etched in my brain enough for now.

1. Monty Python/Grail

Fantastic choice.
Top 5 Monty Python skits:

1. Execution in Russia
2. Upper class twit of the year
3. Philosophy football
4. How to irritate people - Airplane pilots
5. And now for something completely different - milkman

Well, I was talking about good movies and hey, if you're a big Kubrick fan more power to you. Although four times on Blue Velvet? I'm sending the cops over. ;)

The other thing about Cavalry is how far Chris O'Dowd played against type. He is almost always cast as a big lovable lug. After Cavalry I cannot see him that way.

Thanks for the references in a very imaginative category! #2 would also be on my list. I can see why you put Blue Velvet on the list although I actually did see it twice. I've heard of #1 and that it was a difficult film but I've never seen it. I hadn't heard of #4 and #5.

For the same category, off the top of my head, I would include the following i(although I wouldn't say that I loved them!):

Natural Born Killers, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Kids, Memento

Fantastic choice.

Good list! Mine are:

1. Ministry of Silly Walks
2. Piranha Brothers
3. Obscene Hungarian/English dictionary
4. Argument Clinic. I will actually use "shut your festering gob, ya tit!" in conversation.
5. The bit with Eric Idle disappointing his father (Graham Chapman) by becoming a coal miner rather than a novelist. Beautiful inversion of the trope of the blue collar father looking down on the educated son for being weak and fancy.

I guess I can see why someone would say that about Schindler's List but it is my all-time favorite movie. I've watched all, or part of it, more times than I know. I think it's a damn near perfect movie in every way even if the subject matter is so dark. And really, when you get down to it, it's not as much about the Holocaust as is it about the transformation of the title character from amoral rogue to savior and about a group of fortunate Jews who didn't die in the Holocaust.

Top 5 Favorite Sci-Fi Movies

1) Aliens (1986)

2) Robocop (original)

3) Jurassic Park (1st)

4) The Terminator (1st)

5) The Thing (1982)

4 of 5 of these are eighties movies. Considering some other very good eighties Sci-Fi movies I cut from the list (Road Warrior, Blade Runner, Total Recall), I realized that the eighties really must be the greatest decade for sci-fi films.

Two other eighties movies deserve special mention: the beloved Back to the Future (I) and the comedy cult classic Repo Man (1984). Although both of these had Sci-Fi elements, I don't think I can characterize comedies as Sci-Fi (although one could argue that Robocop was half comedy).

Top 5 Armageddon Scenarios:

1) Large asteroid or comet impact,
2) Renewed planet wide volcanism as occurred 70 million years ago
3) Supernova explosion nearer than anticipated,
4) Worldwide nuclear war,
5) Plague of the Undead (Zombies).

I'm gonna join you in nerding out about Sci-Fi movies. Excluding Star Trek and Star Wars just because.

1. The Abyss

2. The Matrix

3. Jurassic Park (1st)

4. Avatar

5. Super 8

I haven't seen Super 8 yet (can't believe that!), but I believe it is available On Demand so I will think about that tonight when I am......you know....staying in. The others are all great choices. I will admit that I saw Avatar in the theater and thought it was an excellent film but probably docked it a bit when compiling my list because it had so many advantages over the earlier films in terms of special effects.

I think I'm going to choose #1 or maybe #4 although I would want to be around the impact points and die earlier. I guess #2 would give me the most time.

I'd also give honorable mention to Cloud Atlas, but that seems to be a very hit or miss movie...either people love it, or hate it ha.

A supernova explosion within a hundred light years of Earth would pretty much fry everything almost instantaneously.

Robocop was so brilliantly dark comedy!

You might've seen in the 4K thread where I recommended The Black Hole and Tron to my daughter, who just subscribed to Disney plus. Not going to be on anyone's top 5 list, but 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Belongs on a old-timey sci fi list along with The War of the Worlds (1953).

Top 5 Gopher Holers I look forward to reading:
1) Veritas (seems like he has been around the block a few times)
2) Short Ornery Norwegian (same as above)
3) Ignatius L Hoops (crazy hoops knowledge)
4) John Galt (doesn't take crap from anyone)
5) Spoofin (dry sense of humor)

I'd also give honorable mention to Cloud Atlas, but that seems to be a very hit or miss movie...either people love it, or hate it ha.

Haven't seen it but I'll look it up. Might have access to it.

Agree on War of the Worlds. And 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a great old time family adventure movie; you can't go wrong with Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Vincent Price, and Peter Lorre in the same film. Plus, I don't think any other motion picture has Kirk Douglas playing the ukulele while singing to a seal.

I remember the TV trailers for The Black Hole when I was young but I never saw the film

Top 5 Def Leppard songs:
1) Die Hard the Hunter (very under-rated song)
2) Too Late for Love
3) Hysteria
4) Photograph
5) Foolin

I can't get on board with this considering Rock of Ages is one of the five best songs of the '80's period.

It's been a while since I saw The Black Hole, but I remember it being a modern day 20,000 Leagues set in space.

Most of the Hi N Dry album would top this list in my opinion. Fantastic album before they really hit mainstream

Top Five Comedies that Don't get enough Respect:

1. Walk Hard: THe Dewey Cox Story (absolutely hilarious)
2. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
3. I Love You, Man
4. Team America: World Police
5. School of Rock
Team America: World Police is just fantastic. I still maintain it's George Clooney's best work. Ironically, that movie virtually mirrors what's happening today, with the Trumpster playing the role of the Team America team.

Good list! Mine are:

1. Ministry of Silly Walks
2. Piranha Brothers

Two posts on Python sketches and nobody mentioned these yet
1. The Lumberjack sketch
2. The Dead Parrot sketch. (pining for the fjords......)
3. Vocational guidance counselor
4. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink
5. and of course, No One Expects the Spanish Inquisition.

Thanks for the recommendation about Super 8. Watched it last night with the spouse and both of us thought it was highly entertaining.

FWIW, none of the Star Trek movies belong in a top 5 anyways.
