Waseca native Steve Cunningham played very well for the Gophers in the late '70's.

Huh, you learn something new every day. I wasn't born for about 20 years but I'm still surprised I've never heard of him. BTW that is some fairly obscure knowledge on your part, are you from the area or something?

Cunningham was also the big man on some great Waseca basketball teams coached by a guy named Manny Beckman. The great Gene Glynn http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_Glynn played on those same teams. Glynn might have been the first Mr Basketball in Minnesota, not sure. But as you can see he made his mark in baseball. Cunningham lives, or did live in Albert Lea, because a friend coached his son there several years ago.

Oh I'm very aware of Manny and Gene, I played baseball with their sons. Another great athlete from Waseca was Monty Dufault, he played minor league baseball for a while. You obviously know a lot about my (relatively) small hometown, are you from the area?

STrib: Nelson, Leidner give Gophes two promising quarterbacks

Gophers coaches like the progress of Philip Nelson and Mitch Leidner as spring practice wraps up.

“We’ve got a lot of other issues,” coach Jerry Kill said, listing linebacker depth at the top. “But we feel good about the quarterback position.”

“Believe it or not, those two kids [Nelson and Leidner] are about the same speed,” Zebrowski said. “… Here’s why I’m so proud of Mitch: In high school, he was a drop back kid, never ran it. He came here and increased his speed. Now he can run away from people, and he’s 233.”
