All Things Rakeem Buckles Thread

He has said all along that he'd have to take some summer classes in order to graduate before transferring.

So it's likely the roster drama will continue until Fall? And I will visit GH 4 times per day and refresh 16 times each visit and eat up every minute of it?

Depends. Some schools have 2 or 3 sessions of summer classes. Maybe he only has to take some classes in the first session which could end by the end of June. Just have to wait and see how things play out.

Well, since Spring semester is presumably over, does that mean he has to go to summer school (at FIU??) so we won't know until Fall?

I wonder what that academic work is. My understanding is that his graduation from FIU is NOT what would make him eligible here. He's not a graduate transfer since he already transferred once. Rather, it's FIU's upcoming APR ban combined with the fact that Buckles has 1 yr eligibility left, that would make him eligible here.

So I wonder if this is a University of Minnesota issue (i.e., accepting him as a transfer academically) and not an issue wrt finishing up his FIU degree.

I'm wondering if he isn't so close to the degree that the U won't accept him as an undergrad transfer, but would have to graduate and attend as a graduate student.

Im wondering why reporters are paid anything...we have a dozen covering the U and not a one can seem to get this kid on the phone and find out what needs to happen.

I have no knowledge of what his grades are, but this kind of sounds like grade issues.

Malik Smith isn't a done deal yet, but Minnesota has publicly announced him.

This scenario is *possible* with Buckles (first, let me stress that he may have a 4.0 gpa - I do not know... just reading between the lines as to what the issue(s) could be): His grades may be close to the cutoff where a transfer would be a 0/1 on retention (APR) for FIU if he went to Minnesota. However, if he raises his GPA just slightly via summer classes, he'd be over the threshold where the retention would be a 0/0 for FIU.

In a situation like FIU, if I'm the athletic director or really anyone there... and perhaps if I'm Pitino being that it was my previous school... I'm taking the stance that I won't object to him transferring and being immediately eligible if* FIU won't be hit with a 0/1.

With Malik Smith, Buckles, Joe Coleman and others with situations that are still not finalized... we may not have a final look at this team's roster for 2013-14 for many months.

Interesting, I was about to raise that exact question. With the way the FIU AD gushed over Pitino when announcing he was leaving, you'd think Pitino wouldn't want to screw them over by taking FIU transfers who would hurt their APR even further. So yeah, I think that's reasonable speculation, to the extent we've got nothing else to go on at this point.

For that matter, I would sure as heck hope the U wouldn't grant Coleman his release until he's sufficiently kept up with his schoolwork to not hurt our APR.

Amelia Q&A on Buckles:

Any recent news on Buckles? And what are the odds he would get the waiver to play right away should he come here #gophers

@JeremyChristoff

No news currently on Rakeem Buckles (with FIU last year). While I still think this will happen, there isn’t necessarily a big rush for it because as a graduate, he is not bound by the signing period (which ended May 15). It’s not a guarantee. If he does come to Minnesota, I think he will also get the NCAA waiver to play right away, because I don’t think he would make the decision to transfer again if he didn’t. Remember, this guy was at Louisville the year before – the only reason he isn’t GUARANTEED immediate eligibility – and sat out last year. I highly doubt he wants to sit out again, especially since he’s graduated, for one more year of school.

I’m honestly not sure what the hold up is, but it could be as simple as waiting for the APR numbers to come out and for a possible waiver to be official. I think that both he and Malik Smith will get that waiver, but while Smith had to make a calculated guess based on their chances, Buckles has the luxury of waiting until it’s official to make his move.

Makes zero sense. The signing period is for the NLI. An NLI is not mandatory or necessary. Smith didn't have to make a calculated guess at all. The NLI signing period is irrelevant.

Ditto on GW's last post. Amelia clearly has no idea how this all works.

I don't know if you guys have noticed or not but Amelia doesn't seem to know how a lot of things work. Other than being really on top of having a large volume of content her beat is pretty awful.

She still beats the shlt out of Myron, the Mankato Flash, Medcalf..

As a point of further clarification, Smith didn't sign an NLI and couldn't have. Same thing goes for Buckles.

Neither could have signed an NLI with a D-I school this year no matter who/when/why/etc.

But Smith and Buckles can still play for us right?

But Smith and Buckles can still play for us right?

Who knows?

Smith sounds good to go.

APR penalties are to be publicly released this coming week - but I don't know the status of any appeal from FIU.

-----------
But.. my comment wasn't due to the status of those two specifically. Rather, just pointing out that an NLI can't be entered into between a 4-year school and a transfer that is coming from another 4-year school.

None of 'em. (i.e., not only do NLI signing dates matter very little for those who can actually enter into an NLI, but in the case of Smith, Buckles and many others, an NLI was never even an option and therefore the 'signing dates' were 100% irrelevant.)

Who was the cat that didn't show up for the first day of school at Notre dame and went to USC... NLI was either not signed or had little effect in that case, and also illustrates the date issue quite vividly

Well, the APR part is now official. How soon before we hear something definitive about Buckles then?

For a long time now it's looked like it's an issue surrounding his academics. (Not to do with being accepted into graduate school either - just getting eligible.)

Don't know that to be the case for certain, but that's what has made sense for a number of weeks now.

Sounds like id he can finish up his coursework and be granted his release from FIU, his path to Minnesota is pretty clear now with the postseason ban.

Yep. He was one of 10 Louisville basketball players receiving the honor and one of 3,370 Big East student-athletes to receive that honor in 2011-12.

I wonder what the criteria are. Maybe someone knows. I was taken aback when they announced that 15 of the 17 gals on my daughter's HS softball team got academic awards, but the GPA requirement is actually somewhat rigorous. Those 15 are simply good students.

Roughly, a year of 18 credits (i.e., 9 credits per semester) and a 3.0 GPA.

With Buckles and Minnesota, between his injuries and transfer(s), a scenario where he's not quite at the required progress toward degree isn't tough to imagine, even if he is a solid student.

Crazy SWAG: they'll figure out a way to get him here.

The trio aren’t the only ones tagged as former Panthers. Rakeem Buckles, who missed all of last season due to NCAA rules after transferring from Louisville, may also head to Minnesota to join Pitino and Smith.

“There is some interest for Rakeem to go over to Minnesota,” Evans said. “It’s something he wants to do. You want to be at a place where you feel comfortable with people you like. He came here for coach Pitino and he’s going to Minnesota, he wants to join him.”

This was just published four hours ago so it seems Rakeem definitely wants to come to Minnesota. Seems the question is when not if.

Hope it works out for next year. We def need some more size. EE has had his problems with foul trouble and Mo is a big question mark.
