All Things Rakeem Buckles Thread

Tubby picked up Mav in about May of 2010, when we had just had a different point guard, Justin Cobbs, transfer about a month before and needed to fill the spot, and pickings are a bit slim this time of year. If Dre transfers in a couple days and Pitino signs a 2-star point guard because he is the best attainable option at this point, are you going to criticize his recruiting?

Also not sure if you're implying that Mo is untalented or simply out of shape, but he was a Rivals top 150 recruit with multiple BCS offers, so it's not like he was some guy that no one wanted that Tubby recruited on a whim. I agree it would be to Mo's benefit to drop a little weight and get in better shape, but having sustained an injury that sidelined him for the better part of 2 seasons has slowed his development.

Personally I still think there's hope for Oto, he had an okay freshman year. I don't believe it was until this season that the "Oh God, why is this guy on the floor?" sentiment became common.

More Tubby apologist drivel. Please move to the TT board. Poor Tubby, lost recruits because of transfers and had to fill the positions with non-Big Ten athletes!

I wonder what Florida was thinking when they offered him a scholarship?

Probably the same thing as Tubby when he received a Gophers offer. Obviously, Oto stood out to coaches at one point. Maybe he wasn't playing against the best competition at his Illinois prep school. Maybe he caught fire at a couple of tournaments. Who knows, but at one point (probably not all at the same time) Oto had offers from Minnesota, Florida, Iowa State, and Providence.

I'm happy Tubby's gone and not to be a Tubby apologist, but I think it's unfair to put to much blame on the staff for Oto. We had scholarships open during the spring and Oto obviously stood out in some way.

Please move to the TT board....such a creative response.

I believe Mo has some talent; however, I don't think he can play in a fast paced game.

I'm aware of the circumstances with Mav, but that doesn't mean I'm not right about him. I said he's what you get when you recruit in the spring. At that point we needed a body. We currently don't need bodies, we need talent.

As for Oto, I think you're wrong. The "Oh no" sentiment has been there since the 2011-2012 season. He simply has no business in D1. He cannot dribble, pass, shoot, jump, etc. It's not his fault he doesn't belong here. It's Tubby's fault for bringing someone so over-matched here.

You simply said, "But that's what we get with Tubby recruiting." You didn't actually mention the fact that he was a spring signing, and that getting a recruit of Mav's caliber isn't uncommon when it comes to spring recruiting when most of the best, most sought-after recruits have been accounted for. If you want to cite player retention as an issue with Tubby that's cool, but the recruiting itself I thought was fine. I don't think you could have asked for much more than a guy like Mav when you're looking for bodies in May.

Yup, that is pretty much what happened. I will freely admit I would have been completely okay with having Tubby coach this team this upcoming season, and I don't think he was as bad as a lot of other posters do, he did win us our first tournament game in over two decades after all, but Pitino has my full support. The change of coach is rather exciting and I'm looking forward to seeing how he does this next season. I will stand up for Tubby when I feel he is being unfairly or excessively trashed, but it's not like I'm going around to every thread sulking about his firing.

Oto's jumper was broken this year... really and totally broken. It wasn't as bad his freshman year. I'm not exactly hopeful for him, but if he gets his jumper fixed, he can contribute. Still may not be a perfect fit in Rich's system, but he could definitely contribute.

Fixing his jumper is easier said than done though.

I'm not sure on Oto specifically, but a HUGE aspect of jump shooting is confidence. It is partially why Spike started the title game off so well.

If Tubby was, as some have said, a confidence killer and Rich can fix that confidence breakdown I wouldn't be shocked to see Oto or anyone really shoot a lot better next year.

Can we keep this thread to Rakeem Buckles? I keep checking this thread to find updates on him, but it's more banter about Tubby and spring recruiting, which doesn't belong here.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but FIU might be banned from post season play, right? If that's the case I think Buckles chances of getting a waiver to play next season increase significantly. Oriakhi got a waiver to play immediately at Missouri this season for that exact reason (UConn was banned from post season play this year), so why couldn't Buckles do the same?

Good point. I think Buckles has a good case with the coaching change and the postseason ban.

Why might FIU be banned? Hadn't heard that.

Coming in Oto had a really nice looking shot, so it may just be confidence that's keeping him from hitting them. Hopefully the new staff will build his confidence and he can start to hit some shots.

Their 2010-11 single year APR was horrendous. Good chance they'll be hit with a postseason ban and potentially more. (In the next several weeks you'll probably see their name on a ugly list... when the 2011-12 APR is revealed to the masses.)

That was the year prior to Richard correct? Or would this be a result involving him?

That was pre-Pitino. FIU AD Garcia said that Pitino has turned the academics there around, but the damage was probably too much to overcome in a year.

All way prior to him. The APR lags (far too much). The latest year released to the masses are from 2010-11. The information that will be released in several weeks will provide single year and four year data for the academic year ended 2011-12.

Isaiah Thomas is a singular, human weapon of mass destruction (see CBA, NY Knicks, FIU, etc.)

Which begs the question - where is he now, and what dumpster is he igniting as we speak?

Richard Pitino @MNCoachPitino
Rakeem Buckles making a comeback. Looks good! Excited to coach him again next year.

Think he envisioned it being in Minnesota?

Buckles looks like a serious athlete, I had no idea he had that type of range. Let's hope like hell he's eligible next season and the knee holds up. If that scenario plays out, he will most definitely start, and looks like he would be the most athletic player on roster.

Would love to have a healthy Buckles battle Buggs for the starting PF spot. Lots of athleticism between the two.

So is it a formality that Buckles is going to be here in the Fall? Are we just waiting for him to transfer or is he already here and we're just waiting for the NCAA to rule if he is eligible immediately?

It was reported a little while ago that he is still unsure if he will transfer or stay at FIU.
