Piece about Malik Smith in this article.

But junior guard Malik Smith, a junior college transfer and team leader who ranked 16th in the nation averaging 3.0 three-pointers per game, posted on Instagram on Wednesday night, “Thanks to FIU for the opportunity to do something special and help turn a program around. With that being said, I’ll be asking for my release some time next week and taking my talents to a different university. Coach Pitino helped show me what hard work was and I’ll forever appreciate it. With him and the rest of my teammates the best in the future.

Why?

If his not starting would force him to transfer, i'd let him leave. It would have nothing to do with not like Joe's skills, it's because that kind of mindset kills a team. If you look in the National Championship Game, there are plenty of guys who have sacrificed for the sake of the team. If Joe Coleman isn't that kind of guy, I'd set an example with him.

I don't think you saw him when he sat on the bench this year.

Why do people think Malik Smith is a good fit here? He's an undersized 2 guard. If we need bodies, then it's pretty low risk, but I wouldn't pencil him in as a starter.

I don't understand why MN Gopher fans are so excited to get sloppy seconds (or thirds) from a Sun Belt school?

Is Malik Smith transferring total speculation? I would welcome Smith with open arms.

Buckles was the leading scorer for Lille his fr yr against cal. Iirc

In the case of Buckles, he was a Louisville recruit who had injury issues. No lack of talent. And he plays a position of huge need. In the case of Smith, we are desperately looking for a PG so Dre can play the 2. Currently we have Mav. And that's it. That's not a high bar to jump over.

I don't think Malik would start if he isn't actually a PG. In that case he would be a great option off the bench. Let him come in for someone like Joe or Austin and then have Dre slide over to the 2 for a while. Then you could continue to start Dre, Joe, Austin and have Malik, Wally, and Ellis (if he recommits) as their immediate back ups. I like it. Then Buggs backs up Buckles and EE, with Oto and Mo only playing as absolutely needed.

Did he even play PG?

If he doesn't start as a junior he'll get mad and transfer with 1 year left? I doubt it. If so, good luck Colton.

I believe he will leave shortly. I felt the same way if we had brought the kid in from Arizona State last year. Getting beat out is one thing, having them bring in an outsider to take your spot is another. For those who have never played or coached, it might be hard to understand the difference. That said, I could care less if he leaves. I think Joe has reached his peak. I felt Wally, Buggs, or Ellis would beat him out sometime next season.

Smith said he was going to transfer...he didn't say to MN.

Can people stop speculating about Joe leaving? THERE IS NO EVIDENCE that it's even a possibility. From all reports no one is even thinking of transferring out.

Nobody said he was transferring here. People are just talking about the possibility since he seems to really like Pitino.

Any one else worried about chronic knee issues?

Any one else worried about chronic knee issues?

Trevor had a couple serious knee injuries, and he turned out alright.

I mean, it's never a good thing. But it sure as hell isn't a death sentence.

For 1 season at the U? A bit, but the chance it happens for a 3rd time in one year= extremely unlikely
It's low risk big reward!

He'd only be here one year. Either it works out or it doesn't, we don't have any other PF options (until Buggs blows up or Travis Reid gets here).

I hope (and think) this was a joke.

Also, couldn't Mo or Oto play the 4? I realize they wouldn't be popular choices, but I think they could play the position.
