Phillip Nolan said he had Vince Taylor watching him in the gym today. Coach Tubby Smith is expected to call Nolan tomorrow night.

Strengths:
Phillip is a very skilled combo post player. He can actually play all 3 front court positions. He is left handed and is probably best as a power forward where he can put the ball on the floor and get to the basket and shoot the 15 footer. Nolan ...

His offer list is impressive: Minnesota, Arizona, Baylor, Clemson, Marquette, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oregon, etc.

Go Gophers!!

Brownell visits big man prospect
By Phil Kornblut
Clemson basketball coach Brad Brownell and assistant Rick Ray spent part of Sunday in the Milwaukee home of 6-10 Phillip Nolan, one of the top targets on the board for the Tigers in 2012. Brownell was the first head coach to make his home visit with Nolan. Nolan said Oklahoma, Marquette and Oregon are coming in for visits this week. Nolan said he will set an official visit with Clemson and is looking at October 8th or 21st. He’s not claiming a favorite but Clemson looks good right now after his conversation with Brownell. “Everything sounded great,” he said. “Everything was great yesterday. It’s just the relationship with both of the coaches. Me and Coach Ray, he’s been recruiting me for three years since he was at Purdue. He kept following me. Best thing we got going is our relationship.” Nolan plans to sign in November. He can play center and both forward positions. He said he prefers to play as a face-up forward.

Looks like a taller Damian Johnson, with a better offensive skill set, but maybe not as good of a defensive stopper.

Lamar Odom.Where off his final list anyhow.Bigger and more athletic than Damon probably shares with Damon the fact he is not physical either.Offensively he has much more upside than DJ.Hear he is transfering back to the city of Milwuakee and has enrolled at Milw. Riverside.

Marcus reports Phil Nolan to visit the Gophers next weekend

http://blogs.twincities.com/gophers/2011/10/22/four-star-post-phil-nolan-scheduled-to-visit-gophers/

It's rare good recruiting news for Golden Gopher fans! I have to feel like the chances of either Buggs or Nolan becoming a Gopher in the early signing period is pretty good. Marcus does mention that Marquette might be the favorite for Nolan due to its proximity, but Nolan's quotes about wanting early playing time should bode well for Minnesota as the Gophers are wide open at the 4 for 2012.

It will be interesting to see what happens if Charles Buggs decides to commit to Minnesota before next weekend, which is a possibility Marcus did not address in his article. It would be great to have both, but we only have room for one or the other right now.

If one is willing to wait, this is the year many assume Rodney is nba bound. But then they assume that every year.

I would guess we would accept both if they wanted to come here.. I know its a sore subject for the purists, but aren't scholarships year to year anyway? I don't think the coaches have to even worry about it right now.. if one doesn't open by a defection, they could , ahem, encourage another player that Minnesota is not fit..

Having seen Nolan play...he needs work, not as polished as some, but would be a great pick up for the gophers.

Didn't realize Nolan was a 4 star. Go get him Tubby, I'd love to have two Wisco kids in this class!

Maybe if we get 3 guys in this class Chip will switch to football?

Nolan would be a huge pickup at this point. Hopefully Tubby can pull off with Nolan what he did with Andre Hollins.

Nolan is listed at 6'10, is that legit? From what I have seen online I would agree with your assesment that he lacks polish, but if he's 6'10 he's much more athletic than the vast majority of his peers at that height.

Kid really needs to add at least 20 lbs of muscle though. Reminds me of a more athletic kyle washington right now

You sound skeptical about a kid who is taller and more athletic than someone with multiple quality BCS offers? If tinny signs Nolan this year and Washington next ... That's be huge. Add Buggs this year too, would be awesome.

A couple of things not quite right in the linked article, but some quick thoughts:

Nolan - I like. He's not only tall (the 6'10" is reasonable), but looong. Definitely not an interior guy now (although he can swat shots well) and I'm not sure he ever will be. You want a physical inside defender that cleans up the boards for when Mbakwe leaves? This isn't your guy. But I do like his game.

I've said this before, but he's jumped around schools quite a bit. Last year when he left WI, he actually started at Huntington Prep (WV) in the fall before arriving at St. Benedict's. I thought late this past spring he had also landed back at Milwaukee Vincent? Anyway, he's now at Milwaukee Riverside and although it doesn't sound like it is the current plan or intention, you can't help but think he may wind up being a 2013 vs. a 2012.

Buggs - Again, not an interior guy. Interest has picked up though (from other schools) and it seems like if Tubby has a chance, we'd hear something soon. The later things go, the more interest there may be for him. Arkansas seems like they're in a good spot as of now.

Willms - Not sure he'll really wind up committing anywhere this weekend.

Journal Sentinel: "Phillip Nolan, a 6-foot-11, senior, is attending Milwaukee Riverside after going to a prep school last year. According to Tigers coach Tyrone Lewis, Nolan's initial appeal to play this season was denied by the WIAA but that the school is continuing to work to help him gain eligibility."

Nolan - Mark Miller reporting this afternoon that the Riverside coach told him Nolan has been declared ineligible. Still think he may wind up being a 2013 as stated before.

Buggs - Arkansas still on him.. others interested.

Willms - he did not wind up committing that weekend... and hasn't to date.

How the hell can anyone believe Rodney will spend a minute in the NBA?

Absolutely agree, if he somehow makes a roster he will likely wash out fast. My guess is NBA D-league at best.

Does the AND 1 tour still exist??? I'm kidding when I say that.

Also, Gopher recruit Ellenson trying to convince 4-star PF Nolan to join him. Not sure how much pull he has. But they played AAU together.

Interesting.

Couldn't agree more! The only place he could shine would be the AND 1 tour

Q&A: Phil Nolan Hearing from Marquette, Oklahoma and Minnesota

Phil Nolan Hearing from Marquette, Oklahoma and Minnesota as Recruitment Picks Back Up
By Chris Monter

http://www.gopherhole.com/news_article/show/130629?referrer_id=331171

Philip Nolan, a 6-foot-10, 210-pound senior forward from Milwaukee Riverside, played in the Twin Cities in the East Metro Showcase this past weekend. Nolan became eligible this past week for the Tigers, who are 11-3 and ranked No. 6 in Division I (Wisconsin’s biggest class.) Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith and assistants Saul Smith and Vince Taylor watched Nolan play against Hopkins Saturday. GopherHole.com caught up with Nolan after the game to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Nolan had considered schools such as Clemson, Marquette, Memphis, Oklahoma, Minnesota and Oregon in the early signing period, but decided to wait until the spring to decide.

Nolan is a long, athletic left-handed shot blocker. He has a soft shooting touch and runs the floor well, but he needs to get stronger and improve his rebounding.

Minnesota is currently full with their 13 scholarships, but the staff is watching Nolan in case a scholarship becomes available.

Gopher Hole: How good does it finally feel to be back on the court?

Philip Nolan: It feels good. It felt really great Friday (against St. Paul Central). Today (Saturday), after a loss like that, I just don’t know. I’m not feeling great.

Gopher Hole: Does playing in these types of games against good competition like this weekend and last weekend in La Crosse helps your team get ready for the postseason because you know that you are going to play better and better team as the playoffs progress?

Philip Nolan: Hopkins is like one of the teams that you would play while you are at a prep school. Some of our guys had never experienced playing against guys like that. It is an eye-opener.

Gopher Hole: Did you know how good they were before this?

Philip Nolan: I played against them my sophomore year and I knew that they were pretty good.

Gopher Hole: I know that you are a competitive kid. How hard was it to be out there and not be able to play?

Philip Nolan: It was real hard. Every day, every time, I would come to a game, I would just wish that I was out there playing.

Gopher Hole: What things have you been working on to continue to improve yourself as a player?

Philip Nolan: Basically, we haven’t been doing too much as individuals. We have been practicing as a team and working on our plays. We have been working on the little things. I have been working on my post moves. Back to the basket stuff. Just trying to get bigger and stronger.

Gopher Hole: Does it help that you have some other big guys that you can go against in practice, like D’Andre Downey, rather than be the only big man on a team?

Philip Nolan: It does. The big man on our team are pretty competitive, so I knew that even if I couldn’t play at Riverside, that even at practice, I would be playing against the top players in Wisconsin.

Gopher Hole: What is the latest on your recruitment? I know that you were hearing from some schools in the fall, but decided to wait to make your college choice. Who are you hearing from the most?

Philip Nolan: It would be Marquette and Oklahoma. I pretty much re-opened my recruitment. Minnesota started back, too.

Gopher Hole: Have you thought about making some visits or go to any college games this year?

Philip Nolan: I went to the Marquette-Louisville game last Monday. I haven’t given it much thought since the first signing period ended. We are just focusing on playing this year and now I can start looking into it more.

Gopher Hole: Where do things stand academically? You were at Vincent as a sophomore and two prep schools last year. Are you close to qualifying?

Philip Nolan: I am going to qualify. As soon as grades come out, I should be qualified

Gopher Hole: Do you think that you will decide in April during the spring signing period?

Philip Nolan: I might decide before then. I’m not sure yet.

"She has a soft shooting touch and runs the floor well."

Haha uh oh. Hopefully she hasn't read this article.

the note about MN being at 13 scholarships could include a note about Marquette always over-recruiting because someone is always leaving early for whatever reason.
