All Things Phil Nolan Thread - UPDATED (5/3): UCONN Bound

Nolan is a gamble at best. I was very underwhelmed by his game for a 6'10" player and it appears (and based on conversations of those that have seen him previously), he has an attitude/work ethic problem. Marquette can have him for a year...my personal opinion that's all he will be around before he either doesn't fit or finds somewhere else to go.

A couple of things not quite right in the linked article, but some quick thoughts:

Nolan - I like. He's not only tall (the 6'10" is reasonable), but looong. Definitely not an interior guy now (although he can swat shots well) and I'm not sure he ever will be. You want a physical inside defender that cleans up the boards for when Mbakwe leaves? This isn't your guy. But I do like his game.

I've said this before, but he's jumped around schools quite a bit. Last year when he left WI, he actually started at Huntington Prep (WV) in the fall before arriving at St. Benedict's. I thought late this past spring he had also landed back at Milwaukee Vincent? Anyway, he's now at Milwaukee Riverside and although it doesn't sound like it is the current plan or intention, you can't help but think he may wind up being a 2013 vs. a 2012.

Buggs - Again, not an interior guy. Interest has picked up though (from other schools) and it seems like if Tubby has a chance, we'd hear something soon. The later things go, the more interest there may be for him. Arkansas seems like they're in a good spot as of now.

Willms - Not sure he'll really wind up committing anywhere this weekend.

Dang.. this takes it back to before last season started. April 2012 updates:

Nolan - Sounds like it's a done deal - he's now a 2013. Playing w/Net Gain this weekend. I think* they are in the NY2LA Sports tourney in a week (Minnetonka HS & Hopkins HS).
Buggs - Wound up committing to the U just before the early signing period.
Willms - Some thought he was going to commit somewhere many, many moons ago, but still has no home.

Tweet from Marcus:

"Former Gophers 2012 target Phil Nolan, who is playing with Net Gain, is going to prep school and now in 2013 class. Still on Tubby's radar."

Go Gophers!!

Who would be the better get, Washington or Nolan?

Got Marcus to give me his opinion...

PiPress Gophers Now ‏ @GophersNow
Washington for sure. But Nolan would be a good get. RT @SKOORB_SIWEL: @GophersNow Who would be the better get in 2013, Washington or Nolan?

Is Washington playing for Howard Pulley this summer?

There are WAY more talented big men out there than Phillip Nolan. Anyone that has followed his HS career on and off the court knows this. He is a TREMENDOUS risk no matter where he ends up and quite frankly, the 3 times I saw him this year his hype nowhere matches his game.

If Chip leaves and Trevor stays do you try to sign both Washington and Nolen, it sounds like they could play with each other. Do you use all four scholerships and only have two left for 2014.

I think we should try to keep at least 3 for 2014. Ideally, this is what I would like to see...

2013: Kyle Washington, Matt Thomas, and Phillip Nolan

2014: Tyus Jones, Rashad Vaughn, and PF/C type

Then our team at the start of the 2014 season would look like this:

PG: Tyus Jones (Fr), Matt Thomas (So)
SG: Andre Hollins (Sr), Wally Ellenson (RSo)
SF: Joe Coleman (Sr), Rashad Vaughn (Fr), Oto Osenieks (RSr)
PF: Mo Walker (RSr), Charles Buggs (Jr), Phillip Nolan (So)
C: Elliot Eliason (RSr), Kyle Washington (So), PF/C (Fr)

You'd figure that one of Andre or Tyus would be in at all times, so Thomas wouldn't really play PG, he'd just be our 3rd ball handler if we really needed one. That team is extremely deep and talented. We most likely won't get all of those guys, but it is fun to think about.

You might be fairly close, but no way we don't sign a PG next year. If heaven forbid Andre tears an ACL, no one wants to hear wait til next year. Also, I would guess Tubby has a fair idea if he will land Tyus and/or Vaughn. I think we will use all 4 tenders next year, which is really the programs next wave. Nothing or no one to wait for. It's time to win, not wait. Winning will take care of recruiting. Also, if we redshirt anyone next year, it will be Buggs.

Ideally 2013 would see Nolan, Washington and Thomas and no others IMO.

I think Thomas could be like Welch, a SG who can play some PG. That's the same situation we have now and you save a scholly for 2014.

Or if you miss on Thomas, sign a PG that's okay with being a 2 year back up behind Dre and then Tyus.

I was thinking that too. Thomas is a big get!

I initially thought that too, but a poster who is from Buggs hometown recently said there is pretty much no chance Buggs redshirts because he has already spent a year at a prepschool, so he is going to want to play. But I guess we'll see what happens.

It is hard to say. I can't tell if he projects to be a PF or he remains at SF where I think he will be a match up problem. Played PF on films I saw. Really like his future.

Looking at those videos, there is no way he can guard the SF position.

I see him being a combo forward, kind of like Damian Johnson with a jump shot. I think he'll probably spend more time at PF to begin with though.

Not what I saw. My question is does he have a B1G body yet? No way I saw a B1G PF without bulking up. Looking at Mbakwe and Huge Mo he's a SF at this time. Also, that's what Tubby recruited him for.

I guess Paul Carter would probably be an applicable comparison too. I believe he was about 6'8 and he definitely spent some time at 4.

Did you watch that live game feed or just the highlights?

I disagree. I only saw about 4 minutes of that championship game, but he looked incredibly long and athletic to me.

Also, I think Buggs and Ellenson are both redshirt candidates, because it's going to be tough for either of them to see north of 5 minutes in B1G and important non-conference games. Part of the reason why Buggs and Ellenson were rated so highly is because of their potential. Think about Wally, he wasn't selected first-team all-state but was unanimously selected as one of the top 5 prospects in the state. As a freshman next year he might not be one of the top 5 players from the state of Wisconsin's Class of 2012, but by the end of his collegiate career, he certainly will be.

+1

In looking at Nolan versus Washington it appears the Kyle would be a much better recruit. Nolan has done little with his talent other than to float from school to school, struggle with grades and when he has played, been less than impressive.
I don't buy the Ellenson being a great prospect and not a great High School player angle. He should have been easily in the top ten players in the state based on his career. My big concern is if the kid can shoot the ball. It's funny how some local scribes assume he is a great shooter. Wonder why? lol

Milwaukee Riverside senior Phil Nolan just tweeted that he committed to UConn

When I was watching today's Elite 8 game, the name Phillip Nolan sounded really familiar to me as a Gopher fan! A quick search reminded me that we were hot after him just 2 years ago. Thought it'd be cool to bump this with a follow up on him. Not sure any of us would've guessed that in his sophomore year he would be the starting center on a final four team. (Isn't a huge impact player though)
*He had 4 points, 4 reb, 1 blk in today's win over MSU.
