All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

Recruiting rankings don’t really mean as much in 2021 and 2022

the oddities of the extra year mean class size discrepancies inflate or deflate rankings.

the question isn’t what is the recruiting ranking. It is, is a school recruiting competitively. I would say the whole big ten is right now.
Those were some of my thoughts as I typed. He has a really nice portal class to compliment and I would think another good year on the field will be good for recruiting. Big swing year ahead for the program.

I think with the portal, you can rank 14th in recruiting in the B1G, but still hit in the portal and finish in the top half on the field every year.

I actually believe the portal will force some higher rated prospects that would have normally been taken by a blue blood school and push them down a tier.

Team rankings on 247 are a joke.

Iowa - 2 four star, 16 three star - #6 class in the Big Ten
Minnesota - 2 four star, 16 three star - #13 class in the Big Ten

#6 looks like you are doing a solid job recruiting, #13 looks like you are doing a horrible job.

There are 3 classes on paper that are significantly above the rest of the pack in the conference (OSU, PSU, Mich), the rest are just a big jumble of teams where a small change in the player rankings would have a sizeable impact on the team ranking without really changing the true makeup of the class.

I don't think it is quite that simple. I doubt he would be near the top of Michigan's list at this point but I also don't think it is a sure thing he would leave if they offered.

Not sure how willing a place like Michigan would be to buy into the "Row the Boat" brand that is such a big part of PJ Fleck.
Plus, Year Zero would confuse them.

Are Flecks kids with his first wife mostly? If so, are they in Michigan? If the answer is yes to both of these questions, Michigan will be attractive to PJ. I see no other reason Pj would leave MN for MI. Didn't Fleck make a better salary than Harbough last year? Gophers need to keep increasing Fleck's pay and his buyout each year so that it would take SEC money for him to leave. Lastly, the RTB motto works perfectly in MN, very few other schools would let that mantra take over their culture.

Comparison is the their of joy
The difference between the number 18 class in the nation and the 40th class in the nation is one or two guys working out or not working out.

as long as you’re in the right neighborhood of talent…recruiting is as much about fit as it is about talent and ranking…

His kids live with his first wife in St. Louis

Granted, Mizzou is in Columbia which is equidistant to KC and STL. But anyway, I would think Mizzou in the current SEC config would be a harder place to win than here.

Michigan is mired in a sex scandal and didn’t they fire their AD?

PJ Fleck has a great working relationship with Coyle and Gabel. IMHO, he can be successful with a great legacy here.

Ambition drive people.

They’ve been to multiple SEC title games since the move.
the SEC east is basically be decent and upset Georgia and you’re in.

I'll be damned! They did indeed win the East in 2013 and 2014.

Though in my defense -- I assumed only Florida or Georgia had won it since Mizzou and A&M joined -- only Florida or Georgia has won it the last 7 seasons.

Kentucky is coming on. Florida is Florida, Georgia is obviously the national champ. I think Mizzou would be a tough place, going forward.

Nebraska isn't going to hire Fleck after their boosters spent years making fun of him. That would require admitting that they were wrong.

Zero chance on any current Big Ten West head coach. Assistants on the other hand, maybe.

Big XII North head coaches more realistic.

But all of those, it's the same thing: why would you want to go to Nebraska and try to rebuild that thing, with as absurd of expectations as their fanbase have? You're probably already getting $2,3,4M per year in your current gig, how much more money do you need?

Iowa State boards don't seem too worried about Campbell being rumored.

Other than the pure load of cash, I'm not sure how much better of a situation the Nebraska job really is. Iowa probably has a better in-state recruiting base than Nebraska at this point just due to population.

Whoever Nebraska gets will get them to be a bowl level team, but I don't know who goes there and makes them a perennial top 15 team.

Figured this thread would rear its ugly head pretty quickly after the Frost firing.

I would bet Nebraska was on Fleck's list of places he would leave Western Michigan for since being the only D1 school in the State was one of his key factors.

But I really don't think he would be drawn to a place like Nebraska now. I would also be shocked to find out he was high on Nebraska's list as well.

The college sports world has changed the last couple of years, I know nothing of Nebraska's
NIL capability but it can be a game changer making programs much more attractive than they would be.

No way Fleck goes to Nebraska! His agent might use an offer to boost his and his assistants salaries though.

My worry would be Rossi to Nebby. In fact, that’s my nightmare! Imagine what he could do with their cruits!
