I mentioned it in the Pete Rose Reinstatement thread, but I think it's pretty reasonable to think Cicotte was tracking solidly to Cooperstown if not for the Black Sox deal.

He was 36, but still had back-to-back 20 W seasons. Finished with 209 Ws and a career ERA of 2.38. If over 3 to 4 more years, he had gotten to 250 I think it's a no doubter.

He is literally the only decent Rockies pitcher I can think of--the other guy that pops to mind is Aaron Cook, who I remembered as an All-Star, but he never came close to an ERA under 3.00. I checked on the likes of Denny Neagle and Bret Saberhagen also, and uhh, let's say Rockies Stadium was not conducive to a late career rebirth for those guys. I took Ubaldo and the 57% hit he came with.
 

Was able to have back to back Black Sox grids with the utilization of Shoeless Joe Jackson-maybe Buck Weaver or Chick Gandil will be available for today’s board.

It’s got me hankering for a rewatch of Eight Men Out.

Also of note, Atwater’s Mike Kingery was my .300/CF square for a really low score on a first time use.

Looking at the 1919 White Sox, I think the only 2 from the starters I haven't called upon are Ray Schalk and Nemo Liebold.

Old Nemo was also on the 1924 Washington Senators, World Series Champions, so there's some Twins options.
 

A late Twins Alert on the Grid. New Players used today are Punto & Cabrera.

Clyde Milan I have used previously as a Senator-Twin. Note to Rarity Hunters, Milan is pretty versatile in a lot of both Season & Career offensive categories. 40.1 WAR.

1 franchise player as well.
 


I had already used Cabrera, so I thought I could skate in with a low score using Bruno, but it arrived at 10%! With the likes of Sonny Gray, Gaetti, Jim Kaat, Tom Herr, I thought I'd get a much lower score, but alas, it wasn't to be.

I did slot Mick Abel into that Twins/Phillies square for a sweet 0.9% and unique player also.

I need to look into Milan. My tip for today is the father-son combos; easier for me to remember than some other random connections and today I put Ruben Amaro Sr. to good use with the Phils/3B square. I'm done with the Amaro's now, but still have hay to make with the Boones, Bells, Laws, among others (btw, Steve Lombardozzi's kid also had a big league run, to the tune of -1.5 WAR).

Just took a peek at Milan's career-in addition to what you pointed out, also hits on the .300+ category and +30 SB's (which I feel like I've exhausted with the MN Twins contingent). Cheers!

I finally worked in Minnesota native, Ike Davis, son of Ron.

Tzu-Wei Lin is also a New Player. He also happens to be a former Twin, though his 1 game tenure in 2021 was in the OF. I'm guessing he was a Double Header 1 day call up.

Using Kong plus a lot of other Twins in positions that they were generally not their primary spots helped to a Rarity Score of 3, for now.
 



Found a little quirk today. On the football grid, I tried to use Ed "Too Tall" Jones as a Cowboy with a 10+ sack season (not really a deep pull, I know). Anyway, I started with just Ed Jones. Only name that came up was a guy that only played in 1975. Obviously not the right guy. So I try typing in Ed Too Tall Jones. Nope. Third try I discover that he's listed only as Too Tall Jones. So now that I've opened that can of worms, I'm wondering how many players in the database are listed primarily by their nicknames.
 

I was able to achieve rarified air today-9 for 9 on unique players. My recent deep dives in the SABR project write ups really paid off (Fenwick is an interesting one-second MLB’er of Japanese heritage who played baseball at the “U” and made his home in northern MN where he was a county commissioner, or some similar government post).

Liebold winds up being New Player 1,600 for me, along with 4 others. Jimenez, English, Kriske & Dotson are the other Newbies.

I was surprised that there have been 16 MLB All Stars from Mexico. There was only 1 other obvious choice I was confident was a qualifier.

I’m on your heels Ope, sitting at 1587. Aurelio Lopez was my All Star, I think from that juggernaut year of the ‘84 Tigers.

I was also surprised by the number of All Stars and had totally blanked on Fernando being from Mexico. I was skating by on the skin of my teeth in that category today.

I was a bit surprised by the dearth of nicknames for the Twins over the years-Rat was definitely in consideration, but I recall him more as G-Man which is pretty lame. Herbie, Bruno, Kitty, Tony O are pretty pedestrian.

I actually think "Kitty" is for Jim Kaat, given the last name play.

Only other that springs to mind is Ron "Papa Jack" Jackson, but that's more for Reusse's cut by renaming him "Poppa Up".
 

Ope, this is a belated tip of the cap to you-earlier this week in the category of 2000+ hits/30 SB's, Clyde Milan was my man, assisting in my climb towards 1600 unique players, with a smooth .004% rarity score.

Probably common knowledge among others, but I realized today that Bert Blyleven is one of only two HOFers who wasn’t born in the Americas and the first to be elected to the Hall (Ichiro of course being the other).
