All Things Immaculate Grid-related (MLB, NBA, NFL)

I finally worked in Mario Mendoza on today's Grid.

0.3 as a Rangers SS.

Nice work--I have to imagine that Mendoza is the only household name (in homes of baseball aficionado, at least) for a player who has a sub 0.0 WAR score for their career.

I went with former Twin and victim of leukemia at the age of 26, Danny Thompson.

Twins Alert on the Grid today as well a repeat performance for Mario Mendoza this week. He slid in as Pirate/Ranger for 0.3%, helping me to an overall Rarity of 12.

Twins:

Giants- Chris Spier 0.7%
Rangers- John Butcher 0.2%
100 RBI- Delmon Young 0.4%

Also used Hrbek for 100 RBI/1B (0.9%).

I blew my perfect December yesterday on a greedy move--I was going for a low score and I knew Juan Beniquez played for the Rangers and knew he played first base in his career, but it turns out that it didn't happen until later in his career. I guess I can concentrate of the holiday season now.

I also put Spier and Hrbek to use in the same categories as you yesterday and the ever useful Larry Hisle for the 100 RBI's slot.

Got myself a home run today (although I'm a bit confused on what "today" is--it lists December 10, but I'm already on December 12 over here, so 🤷‍♂️). Anyway, it's the one with the Mets/Yankees tie-in.

I got the HR too, but it was a total coin flip guess as to where Rondell White belonged regarding Met or Yankee.

I had no idea that White had played with the Yankees, but I was certain the other three (Pelphrey, Cuddyer, and ???--can't recall who it was) had been with the Mets, so I figured White had to wear the pinstripes. Helpful info for the Grid!

As for today's puzzle, somehow I lucked into getting a double-with four non-Twins, only Senators in the mix I thought I was cruising for a strikeout, but I got lucky.

Today was tough. I got a double as well.

Today's grid I was able to work in Tony Gwynn jr probably could have put his dad in too but would have been to easy. Honus Wagner. Eduardo Escobar, Bert Blyleven, Aramis Ramirez, Curt Schilling and Dave Winfield. Got one wrong because mixed up the Dback and Angel logos. Whoops!

I mix up logos often when I venture over the Basketball Board.

My perfect December is toast. I was stuck on the D-Backs with both the Angels & Brewers. I knew Zack Greinke worked for both. I thought Bartolo Colon was a D-Back, so I used Greinke for the Brewers.

Fail. Colon was never in Arizona.

He was an Angel when he stole the Cy Young from Santana in 2005. Probably Johan best season but we couldn't score runs that year and that probably cost him 7-8 wins

That has to rank right up there with the most egregious Cy Young robberies of all time. If people ever wonder why I hate wins being cited as a stat for pitcher excellence, I can always point back to 2005.

I just looked back on this and forgot that not only did Santana not win the award, he actually finished 3rd, behind Mo Rivera. Cliff Lee came in 4th despite a whopping 2.5 WAR put up that year. Absolutely baffling all around.

I also had Winfield and Blylevsn on my grid, along with Graig Nettles, coulda been Twins legend.

Somehow, someway Mike Fetters popped into my head for DBacks/Angels. No idea how.

I’ve been sloppy in December-lost the other day because my theory that every player whose baseball card I owned eventually played for the Rangers was proven wrong with Dave Kingman.

In hindsight Livan Hernandez was another guy I was considering, knowing he for sure played for Arizona. Turned out he ended as a Brewer, would have allowed me to shift Greinke over to D-Backs/Angels.

Feels like Kingman played for everyone but the Rangers & Twins. His 1977 season was epic.

That season deserves a deep dive--I'd really love to know why a 93 loss Padres team would waive him after 56 games. Was he that much of a cancer in the clubhouse? I could see it--I recall part of his legend was sending a live rat to a female sportswriter back in the mid '80s during a game.

And while he never played with the Twins, his name will always be associated with the Metrodome for the baseball that never came down (or to be more specific, came down a day later).

Twins alert today—
Cardinals: mid ‘70s outfielder who became a pinch hitter specialist for the Redbirds in the ‘80s
Guardians: early ‘80s shortstop who went on to a notable career as a manager
MVP: the first of five (while in MN)

Cards - '00s Pitcher that I think he punched a MetroDome wall.
Guards - '65 WS stalwart Pitcher (and hitter)
MVP - Z

Initials KL?

That's a good one. Mine was an infielder from the Brunansky trade - disappointed to only get 5% on that one.

Old news, but the Saturday Grid, I was able to use all Twins for a Rarity Score of 3.

D Young - R Carew - K Hrbek
D Gladden - C Tovar - E Bane
J Mauer - K Puckett - T Olivia

Bane was the lowest, 0.02%.
Hrbek was highest, 0.6%.

Hey, I did the same, but your rarity score is top flight! I got a 6 with the following:
Killebrew-Puck-Oliva
Tovar-Kaat-Radke
Shane Mack-Carew-Mauer

Mack was at .006 for my low, with Mauer’s 2% the high.

Twins Alert on the Grid today. Warning, too early for Kepler in the Phillies combo.

Phils - St Cloud St / 2%
1B - 1979 All Star / 0.2%
RoY - Tanning Bed Mishap / 12%

I went with an all time great southpaw who got himself a bonus ring in 87. Kind of surprised he's 9%.
1B, guy currently on roster, 0.1%

I had the following:
Started career with Phils, established himself with Twins, and got a nice contract and few good years with Brewers in the ‘70s (2%)

Ex-Yankee slugger who had a few games with Twins when baseball came back from ‘96 strike. Etched in my memory because I watched live as he was a butcher in the field that particular night, with two errors. Didn’t last long after that (.009%)

1979 co-ROY whose degenerative back ended his career too early (7%)

I found spots for Killebrew, Carew and Knoblauch too. Sitting at 16 right now, it'd be a miracle to slide under 10%.
