All Things Gophers/UNLV Game Article Thread

per Sid:

"While UNLV will start Nick Sherry, a redshirt freshman, at quarterback against the Gophers next week, it does have the benefit of bringing back its entire starting offensive line from last season. Brett Boyko, Yusef Rodgers, Cameron Jefferson, Doug Zismann and Robert Waterman are the starting five, and they played the final seven games of the year together in 2011, going 1-6. The Rebels averaged 164.1 yards per game rushing last year, ranking 48th in the country."

The Rebels Offensive Line from last year comes back intact. Can't tell you how good they were last year but they're experienced at least.

"And UNLV, despite its struggles the past two years, appear to be solid up front. Boyko and Waterman each have multiple honors, Rodgers and Zismann are proven seniors, and Jefferson at 6-foot-6, 300 pounds is the most athletic and could have the most potential.

For a team only expected to win three games, the line is one step in the right direction of proving the so-called experts incorrect.

“When you are playing the number of young guys we have, there is going to be some growing pains,” Hauck said. “But, frankly, (the line) held up better than I thought they would and we ran the ball well last year. That in itself gives everyone involved a lot of encouragement that we’ll be pretty good down the road.”

That road begins next Thursday against Minnesota with five familiar faces on the line."

Now back to Weather Talk. :)

So Sid reads the Review Journal?

Listened and watched Coach Hauck's presser for this week. You can find it at unlvrebels.com

Along with him were Sidney Hodge and Yusef Rodgers.

It is 16 minutes in length and his quotes (related specifically to Minnesota) are below. One comment he made about his team was how much he found humor in his O-Line being called "Veteran / Experienced" when he has 3 Sophomores on it.

1. "Minnesota has a team that is very physical in its nature, part of its conference, and also their coaching staff's personality." "We have to play great game if we are going to upset them Thursday."

2. "We expect them to play very well. They are well coached, have a Senior QB, and finished season on a good note."

3. "Gray is a big, physical kid who can throw the ball down the field. They finished the season real well and he (Gray) did some really nice things down the stretch. Looked like he was growing into it (position) in early film but really came on and evolved and played well at end. We expect him to be a tough part of their offense to stop. Their offense really centers around him and you have to find a way at getting him corralled. That is no easy task. He'll be as big as the Defensive Ends trying to stop him."

4. "We're waiting for Minnesota to produce a depth-chart too."

As the sun passed behind the Flamingo tonight at 6, it actually got a little chilly. Of course, I was wearing a swimsuit and had just pounded a beer. At 8 Thursday night, the weather will be the least of UNLV's problems. MarQueis will lead a pummelfest.

Tweet from Doogie: "Told the U of M has sold 2,500 tickets to Thursday's road game. They expect another 2,500 to be bought through UNLV. Pretty good. #gophers"

Go Gophers!!

I cannot wait any longer! Put me on sleeping pills and wake me up at dinner time on Thursday please! :) lol

All you Gopher fans in Vegas make a h@ll of a lot of NOISE Thursday!! Ski-U-Mah!!!

CBS Preview: Minnesota Golden Gophers at UNLV Rebels

The Golden Gophers tout one of the most dynamic players in the country in quarterback MarQueis Gray, but there is a reason this matchup is slated for late on a Thursday. Minnesota coach Jerry Kill also has voiced his displeasure with his athletic director scheduling a road game to start the season.

Prediction: Minnesota 20, UNLV 17

Anyone know of a live streaming link that would be available online? Thanks for any help!

1500: Preview: Opener at UNLV provides Gophers an immediate test of progress

The call: Gophers

Given the Gophers' rebuilding nature, the nonconference schedule is bound to be filled with moments that will have onlookers shaking their heads. But the Gophers appear better equipped to weather some of those issues -- missed assignments, inconsistent play, etc. -- than they did last year in nonconference losses to USC, New Mexico State and North Dakota State. The Gophers and UNLV are both programs desperate for upward movement, and Thursday's game could provide one side the needed boost. Kill's team is in the best position to take advantage of it. With a pair of lackluster offenses on display, scoring may be sparse. Gray is not an elite quarterback, but he holds a distinct edge over Sherry. Gaining confidence in the first half is critical for the Gophers. If UNLV is prevented from scoring early on and building a lead, the Gophers should be able to outlast the Rebels in the fourth quarter.

Kill has noted several times how our D has improved upon its speed. We need to use said speed to get to the ball, especially against their run game and their pin and pull blocking, and create some turnovers. Let's go fellas.
