Many milestones were reached as several former Gophers took the field once again for week four of NFL action.

In a battle of former Minnesota tight ends, rookie Maxx Williams and the Baltimore Ravens took on veteran Matt Spaeth and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football. Williams earned his first start and recorded two catches for 17 yards. Spaeth played on offense and special teams. The Ravens defeated the Steelers in overtime, 23-20.

All-time leading Gopher receiver Eric Decker suited up for the New York Jets in London as they took on the Miami Dolphins. Decker, who sat out last week with an injury, recovered nicely as he hauled in four catches for 46 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown. The Jets beat the Dolphins, 27-14.

Former Minnesota defensive tackle Ra’Shede Hageman took the field for the Atlanta Falcons against the Houston Texans. Hageman recorded his first sack of the season as the Falcons went on to defeat the Texans, 48-21.

Buffalo Bills tight end and former Gopher quarterback Marqueis Gray played on offense and special teams against the New York Giants. Gray recorded his first reception of the season for 2 yards as the Bills fell to the Giants, 24-10.

Minnesota Vikings return specialist and former Gopher Marcus Sherels traveled to Denver to take on the Broncos. Sherels returned one punt for a gain of seven yards as the Vikings were defeated by the Broncos, 23-20.

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Damien Wilson recorded career highs on Sunday Night Football against the New Orleans Saints. The rookie tallied five solo tackles and four assisted tackles. Wilson and the Cowboys fell to the Saints, 26-20.

• A tough break for ex-Gopher MarQueis Gray, who was put on season-ending injured reserve by the Bills on Tuesday. The tight end suffered a fractured forearm against the Giants on Sunday, when he caught his first pass of the season, for 2 yards. Buffalo claimed Gray last November after the Vikings waived him.

Rookie linebacker Damien Wilson played on special teams for the Dallas Cowboys as they took on the New York Giants. Wilson and the Cowboys were defeated in New York, 27-20.

Former Mackey Award-winning tight end Matt Spaeth participated on offense and special teams for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers fell to the Chiefs, 23-13.

Defensive tackle Ra’Shede Hageman and the Atlanta Falcons traveled to Tennessee to take on the Titans. Hageman recorded one assisted tackle as the Falcons escaped with a victory, 10-7.

Former Gopher cornerback and Minnesota Vikings return specialist Marcus Sherels returned four punts for 20 yards against Detroit. The Vikings beat the Lions, 28-19.

Minnesota’s all-time leading receiver Eric Decker continued his successful season with a big game against the New England Patriots. Decker hauled in six catches for 94 yards in a 30-23 loss to the defending champions. The veteran wide receiver has 24 catches on the year for 333 yards and four touchdowns.

• Ex-Gophers defensive lineman Ra’Shede Hageman is starting at defensive tackle for the Falcons and in eight games has seven solo tackles, four assists and one sack.

Sherels is one of those true underdog stories that is fun to get behind. There was nothing in his college career that indicated he would make it in the NFL but here he sits 5+ years later as one of the better punt returners in the league and a contributor on defense.

The Vikings on Friday released former University of Minnesota safety Brock Vereen from the practice squad to make room for tight end Chase Ford.

Ford’s agent, Vince Taylor, had told the Pioneer Press on Thursday that Ford would be added to the practice squad after having been released Wednesday by the Vikings.

Vereen, a fourth-round pick by Chicago in 2014, was released by the Bears in Sept. 29 and signed to Minnesota’s practice squad on Oct. 1. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, though, soon said that practice-squad safety Anthony Harris was a stronger candidate than Vereen to be elevated to the 53-man roster.

Definitely a guy to root for. Honestly, Sherels is deceptively quick and has great field vision. In a pinch, he can step in and play some d-back, even though you prefer to limit his snaps.

Week 10 of NFL action kicked off Thursday with all-time leading Gopher receiver Eric Decker and the New York Jets taking on the Buffalo Bills. Decker continued his great season as he hauled in six receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown. Decker had a pair of 31-yard receptions as the Jets fell to the Bills, 22-17.

Rookie tight end Maxx Williams played a big role in the Baltimore Ravens offense against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Williams recorded four catches for 40 yards and caught his first career NFL touchdown. Williams and the Ravens fell to the Jaguars, 22-20.

Minnesota Vikings return specialist Marcus Sherels returned two punts for 14 yards against the Oakland Raiders. The Vikings beat the Raiders, 30-14.

Linebacker Damien Wilson was active for the Dallas Cowboys but did not record any statistics in the Cowboys 10-6 loss to the Tampa Bay Bucaneers.

Former Mackey Award-winning tight end Matt Spaeth was inactive for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers went on to beat the Cleveland Browns, 30-9.

Rookie running back David Cobb was not active this week. He looks to make his NFL debut in the coming weeks.

I truly beg to differ; not to go all Sid on the deal but I told folks this kid could play if given an opportunity. The NFL is chock full of cats who can't play. The Bears had a safety (not Brock) on their roster for years who was absolutely horrible.

Marcus has great heart and football ability to go with it. If he played for a winning college team he would have been drafted. He wasn't flashy he just did and does his job.
