All Things Gophers Coaching Search Thread (rumors, tweets, tid-bits and more)

And we continue on OUR search for OUR next Head Coach....I know (and maybe even hope) that Nico Medved will be the next Golden Gopher Head Coach....but with his NCAA success I am not convinced he will be our guy (apologies to all of those that have made it a point to dispute my thoughts and analysis that WE should only have a Plan A)...so let me go back to the list...McCollum, Nedved, Calhoun, Jacobsen, and Tauer. One of them is likely to be named our head coach in the next 72 hours.

The next couple of days should very interesting. With McCollum's team advancing to the 2nd round and Medved's team playing today, it is possible that both are still coaching come Monday. It is also possible that their teams are both done by Saturday. My guess is that by Sunday night, both will be done coaching for the year...and both may have job offers by the time that happens. Meanwhile, Calhoun's season is over. I am taking Bennett off the list as I think his coaching days are done (at least for now) so the list is now 5...Jacobsen, Medved, Calhoun, McCollum, and Tauer. One of them is likely to be named our head coach in the next 72 hours.

Let’s imagine for a moment A CSU loss and silence from the U the following day and the next day still no announcement!!
I know I have been taking heat for a week or more but....Nico Medved to Minnesota is not a done deal. IF it happens, that would be great!!! IF it doesn't, lets decide upon a Plan B or C. OUR Plan Bs need to be Jacobson, McCollum, Calhoun, and Tauer. For those who hate any of them, .you are entitled to your opinion....and I got nothing but love for you! Let the haters hate!!!

This is just a hunch, no inside info, but I kind of think it ends up being McCollum. I slightly prefer McCollum over Niko, so maybe I'm just being biased. Even though I don't believe the last pick was Coyle's pick, he's already been aware of Niko for years. If he loved Niko, I kind of think he would have made a move earlier. McCollum on the other hand? There is the Drake connection and the move kind of reminds me of a PJ hire.

I get the counterargument that now is the time that makes the most sense for Niko, but McCollum just feels more like a Coyle pick to me.

Ben Jacobsen would have been a viable candidate 10-12 years ago. Talk of him being a candidate now is ridiculous.

If Jacobsen is introduced as the new head coach Coyle should be fired immediately after it is announced.

I think the fact that it's been really quiet lately suggests that Niko to Minnesota is a done deal. In fact I believe Thorson has probably communicated with the players on behalf of Niko and given them some indication of whether the incoming staff views them as guys they want to retain.

I remember when Ben Johnson was hired. I immediately thought it must be Jacobsen and I heard it wrong. I was flabbergasted that we hired Jacobsen, but I then was depressed when I learned that it was indeed Johnson.
Same exact thing happened with me, I read it as "Ben Jacobsen"

This is the first year he really had cover to make the move. He pretty much had to give Ben 4 years- especially when year 3 was a progress year in terms of wins.

It's Niko.

And Roland Brooks has confirmed it with Mrs. Coyle! 😂

Besides, if the U loses out on an alum from right down the street to a program in an inferior conference when all the money now is going to the top two, the basketball program is hopeless. Whether this gets done or not will shape whether the U wants to make basketball competitive and whether it’s worth investing your time and money. Time will tell

Maybe not, if they replace him with Ali Farokhmanesh they may stay.
That's my one concern but the develop Niko has shown will help. He can find talent with his current players or elsewhere.

With all due respect, WE don't have to decide on anything. I have no doubt that Coyle has a plan B|C|D...and those plans might include names you have mentioned....or they might not.

A lot of things will shake out over the next week or so as teams are eliminated from post season play. Right now the general consensus seems to be Medved is coming here but obviously anything can happen and nothing is set in stone until contracts are signed.

You hear anything about the CSU sophomores or Minnesota kid?
Nothing on players… someone close to me was contacted by a higher up in MN Athletic Department with questions from Coyle regarding Medved being the coach…
