All Things Gophers Coaching Search Thread (rumors, tweets, tid-bits and more)

If you read the DMR account of Niko leaving Drake it sours his appeal. Partying on Tuesday with A.D. and President and telling them he is not interested in the CSU job. Then on Thursday takes the job. Not sure you can trust the man.
That is normal in every business I have ever been in! The company does not give you a heads up and say oh by the way we are going to fire you in 3 weeks so what reason do you have to tell them you are looking at another business opportunity until you expect it. That is just looking out for yourself and totally normal.

OK. Let's recap. There have been 27 coaches mentioned in this or other threads as a possible new Head Coach at Minnesota. Jackson, Smith, Tauer, Medved, Wade, Bennett, Musselman, Dutcher, Calhoun, Hodge, Huss, McCollum, Rice, Saunders, Siddle, Valentine, Young, Moser, DeVries, Jacobson, Crean, Joerger, Grant, Sweeney, Johnson, Crutchfield, and Bickerstaff...

How about Matt Margenthaler, National Champ DII at U of M Mankato
or Wieck at U of M Duluth

for Gophers Head Coach?

both guys run solid programs and win at a high level.

...and many of them are not legitimate either because they are unattainable (d/t their other opportunities, salary, or simply because they are unqualified*) * Not that 'unqualified' stopped up from hiring Ben Johnson 4 years ago. So let's eliminate Musselman, Wade, Johnson, Smith, Bickerstaff, Crean, Moser, Saunders, Jackson, and Crutchfield...that leaves us with 17 candidates...

"Those sources include a former college basketball coach with Minnesota ties who called Sports Headliners Friday to say Medved, head coach at Colorado State since 2018, will succeed Ben Johnson who was dismissed earlier this week after four losing Big Ten seasons."
Interesting, but I still doubt the source has actual knowledge on the topic. Coyle seems to play these searches very close to the vest.

...and several others would be a big stretch (not that we didn't make a stretch with hiring Ben Johnson, but I think we all hope we don't do that again)...Sweeney, Valentine, Siddle, Huss, Hodge...so that takes us down to 12 candidates...

....and of the 12 there are a couple I just don't see as being the program changing hire that we need (not that we considered that when we hired Ben Johnson, but we should have) so I'm going to rule out Grant and Rice....so we are down to 10...

Unattainable is one of those words created just to confuse the crap out of people who don't know better.

...that leaves us with 9 (I must have miscounted before) and here they are, in order: Jacobson, DeVries, McCollum, Dutcher, Bennett, Tauer, Medved, Joerger, Calhoun...

...the top three on that list are likely to have opportunities elsewhere (Indiana and Iowa being #1 and #2) that are better than the Minnesota job so I suspect 2 of them will be 'off the market' by next weekend...and #4 and #5 may have no interest is leaving their current situations (SDSU and 'retired')...so the next week will be interesting...
