All Things Gophers Coaching Search Thread (rumors, tweets, tid-bits and more)

If they won’t retire his jersey or hang the banners he was largely responsible for, they ain’t hiring him to be the coach. I think they’d rather hire Will Wade with his financial cheating past than dig up the academic cheating scandal BJack is tied to.
Exactly. Bobby Jackson was the poster child for the cheating scandal

So he would be the perfect candidate but wouldn't take the job if offered.....so what's the point then of having him as a candidate for a job he won't take?
Wine him, dine him, 69 him; whatever it takes. That's what I say.

It does take a mutual interest to make something like this work. We can't abduct him at gunpoint and force him into a 5-year contract (I don't think).
I think I know a few heroes that might recreate the captive bride crime and apply it to a coach. All we need is a Golden Apple, Achilles and a cast of thousands.

I look at it this way. Before we had Fleck, we needed Kill to repair the damage caused by Brewster. This needs to be a Kill caliber hire, ie a mid major coach well known for running a solid program with solid fundamentals, before we go for the big name hire. There was a saying along the lines of "you can't build a foundation on a pile of sand." We're sitting on a pile of sand right now. We need to fix the program from the ground up and need a guy who's known for stability and accountability before we become a program who can draw a home run.
Absolutely agree. Big reason why I support who I do for it.

Get someone in to stabilize the program while hopefully drastic changes are happening with Williams and NIL.

If that's where he wants to work, more power to him, but if I'm Minnesota, I'm coming after him hard. "What do I have to do to put you in a new program today?" A successful coach will more than generate their own salary.

Who do they really want?
Not sure but I can guarantee you that a coach two years out of DII is not what they were looking for when they forced Woodson out. They may have been delusional about Stevens or some other star to begin with who all said no.

I still think they would look for a big name before going to McCollum.

It seems like there is a lot of buzz with Niko but I don't know if it's truly his job or just that he was the "obvious" candidate so people are just trying to be first rather than actually having information. The guys that are supposed to be the insiders in the coaching world didn't even have good info on Ben Johnson's job status.

I am watching the Rams tonight and trying to talk myself in to the potential hire. In no way do I think he's bad, I just question him being the guy to come in and excite fans/donors and potential recruits and we're going to need a monster portal haul.

I think it's interesting everyone hates Dave Joerger. He'd really intrigue me, but if the fanbase wouldn't be interested then he's clearly not the right guy.

Hell yeah, go for it.

Even if you think he may be headed to Iowa (or Indiana or wherever), there's no reason at all not to put on the full-court press to try and sell him on coming to Minnesota.

NBA fans would respect Dave Joerger and his coaching ability. This job is way more than coaching ability. Heck, 2 years ago, Ben recruited a first round draft pick, 2 guys that signed NIL deals worth over $400k from other Universities and a couple other 3 star guys-- so he can recruit. Then when he lost some of them late this spring, he signed the best he could get at a late date and was picked to finish last in the conference and finished well above that- so he could recruit 2 years ago, could coach this year and still got fired-- you need to do both every year and sometimes re-recruit multiple times per year. And then your need to fund-raise the NIL coffers overflowing and still be nice to people at the state fair in August. Dave hasn't done any of that-- but he could X and O the living crap out of any game-

Niko is mild mannered, but... Maybe being good at coaching basketball is more important than being the next Harold Hill. People might overthink this. You don't have to look hard to find mild mannered coaches who build programs and excite fan bases by presenting a sound product and engendering trust in their ability.

Joerger can coach....tremendous success in the CBA and he got the shaft in 2 of his NBA jobs. To me, he's interesting and has a real resume. Question is, can he recruit? Can he raise NIL money?

Do you mean Christie a second round draft pick or someone else?

Medved is up 22 on Utah State. If they blow the lead to miss the NCAA's we'll know he's meant for MN.
Was 28 early in the 2nd half and down to an 11 point lead with 3 minutes left. I kind of like the Utah State coach. Niko seems to be talking to his assistants more than his players. Not overly impressed with Niko as he's not too energetic on the sideline, certainly not like he should be with the diminishing lead..

EDIT: They won by 11 though the lead did shrink to 6. They made only 1 field goal over the last 10 minutes of the game. Not Nico's fault but still they were very shaky down the stretch. They play Boise State, who beat little Richie's UNM team, for an NCAA birth tomorrow @3pm PDT.

Wins a win. But letting them get within 6 was very Minnesota sports.

Ben McCollum: Northwest Missouri State won four national championships, 12 regular season conference titles and eight conference tournament titles under McCollum. He won eight conference coach of the year awards and eight Division II national coach of the year awards.
That is 24 titles and he moves to Drake and wins two more titles for 26 titles..

Niko has one going into Saturday,

Richard now has 3 titles and two Conference Coach of the Year awards.

If there is any truth to the rumor he'd like to be at Minnesota and we don't hire him....well... I don't know what to say. Get it done Mr Coyle.
