I haven't heard anything so I assume Dunn did not give a commitment to UVA last weekend. True? Do you think Minnesota is still in the hunt?
 






Yeah that article only confirmed what I was thinking. If there's still a committable offer on the table once he feels comfortable with making a decision, he'll be headed to Virginia. I certainly wouldn't blame him for that decision at all.

This is gold. So if he chooses Minnesota or somewhere else and not UVA it will be because he doesn't want to put all the work in that is required to play for UVA...

Somehow this will get far less criticism than anything BarnBurner posts (and I enjoy both guys contributions to the board).

People are probably burnt out on criticizing Built's UVA bias.

Not meant that way at all. Their style and culture demands a great deal of time on defense, serious academic requirements, usually waiting on playing time. Never said he would not have to work hard here (he will) or that he would not be a serious student here. They are different opportunities with some similarities. I actually think that in some ways that coming here is a better choice for him.

From your first post: but that package at UVA is not for everyone. It is a grueling commitment to their academics, their practices, their structure, their defense. For some it is exactly what some are looking for.

It certainly read as UVA is far superior to any other program, as if no other school has standards like that when it comes to academics, practices, structure or defense. I know there are varying degrees in the academics part of it, but they aren't that different at any of the top academic schools.
Isn't playing D1 basketball a grueling commitment to practice, structure, defense, etc. regardless of where someone decides to play?

I don’t know how anyone can objectively
Say it won’t be harder to get playing time on a perennial national title contender as opposed to a team that will likely finish near the bottom of the conference and using immediate playing time as part of its sales pitch.

I don’t know if “workload” was the best word. Maybe “delayed gratification” would have been more appropriate. He can work hard at either program but at Virginia, he will not enjoy the fruits of his labor until he is a junior or senior.
 

One would think playing significant minutes earlier would be a pretty damn good trump card.
We shall see.

Is 247 supposed to be the most accurate National recruiting service? I’d take Carrington any day over King. IMO he’s top 3 in MN. To not have him in the top 250 is a joke. Holloman, Payne, Heide I get then I’m going with Carrington.

JAYDEN PIERRE - 44 SPOTS​

Why he rose: An aggressive and quick lead guard who can make things happen off the dribble, Jayden Pierre left a terrific mark on the Under Armour Circuit with his play this July and he is now a four-star prospect after moving from No. 149 to No. 105. He excelled at scoring the basketball from the point guard position and did so in an efficient fashion. His mentality and ability to get buckets will translate well to the high major game.
Recruitment: Florida, Minnesota, Providence, and Xavier are all in the mix for his commitment.


PHARREL PAYNE - 44 SPOTS​

Pharrel Payne
Why he rose: For many, Pharrel Payne may be a bit of a mystery but the big man who will play for home state Minnesota did enough to move from No. 150 to No. 106 while achieving four-star status. Pushing 6-foot-9 with long arms, Payne is a bouncy athlete with a great frame who runs the floor, rebounds and has good instincts as a shot blocker. The mechanics on his jumper are still a work in progress, but he's already shown some touch as a face up guy and he is one of the most intriguing movers in this update to the rankings.
Recruitment: Committed to Minnesota.
 

Interesting that Heide/Hurlbut/King all dropped, Aligbe is still ranked, Lee not in the rankings now. Not sure any of that means anything at all but just interesting things I noted.

They can say these rankings aren't based on commitments but i find that tough to agree with that when guys from Duke/UNC/Kent etc are all in the 40s and suddenly all top 15 guys!

Byrd 89th, Ola Joseph and Carrington are 198th and 199th, to go with Pierre and Payne that would be a very nice first class for Ben that would compare much more favorably than Pitino's and would be a top 20 class similar to Tubby's 2008 haul

These days yes, They poached Bossi from Rivals. ESPN, doesn't even try anymore. Prep Hoops is pretty good, if you like basketball at all levels they do a top 250 in each class for each state. Carrington fourth or fifth in the state in their rankings. With Covid and this class losing a year on the circuit last year, it was a little tougher to gage this group.
 

Based on Rivals rankings, this year's class is already better than three of our past 11 classes (2012, 2013, and 2014) and has far more depth than 2 of the last 11 classes (1 player in 2021, 1 top 200 player in 2017). So the classes we are competing with are:

2020: 3 Top 200 players (139, 162, 199)
2019: 2 Top 200 players (98, 133)
2018: 3 Top 200 players (59, 196, 198)
2016: 2 Top 200 players (49, 114)
2015: 4 Top 200 players (125, 138, 167, 179)
2011: 2 Top 200 players (101, 109)

2022 (so far): 3 Top 200 players (106, 198, 199) with three others interested (89, 94, 105)

Which of those classes was markedly better than our current class and/or what our 2022 class is going to look like when it is full?

Yeah. King and Carrington are pretty close and I think that's probably accurate. I might even put King slightly ahead of Carrington because I think King might have a little more position versatility (could play a little 1), but I think they're close.

That said, Carrington is one of those players that can be kind of difficult to grade because he is so smooth. He is a good athlete but he is more just a really good ball player. I think they great athlete types might shine a bit more in HS because they are just so superior to the other people around him athletically.

So, I think Carrington has a higher floor than King but maybe a slightly lower ceiling. But they are damn close (in my untrained opinion).

Yep, Ben's putting a good class together and the thing that really stands out to me is that his pieces really fit well. I'm sure that has something to do with us having so many holes, but so far I like Ben's vision with his recruits.
