All Things Gophers Basketball 2017 Recruiting Thread

Does this mean we only have two available scholarships? I was under the impression that there were three available for the 2017 class. Also, why would it matter if one was willing to wait until spring?
We only have 2. If one waited to spring a scholarship could open up via transfer.

Word is VA Tech is the team to beat with him.

That is wrong. Butler will not get Bede, if they get Barcello before his visit. Regardless, that winds up fairly soon. Kyle Young and Bede have official visits the same weekend and they evidently are expecting Christian David's commitment soon. That's too many. So if Barcello commits first, they won't take him but they've been the clear leader for months with Bede. http://247sports.com/Player/Wabissa-Bede-85349

And on the other, Jerald Butler is a point forward. Hes effectively a Roosevelt Jones proxy (below), he has so effect on any of those guys above.

Not sure where else to put this, but Paul White is transferring from Georgetown. He was a 4 star forward in the class of 2014, and he even visited here. If we'd have to use one of our 2 2017 scholarships on him, I don't think we'll be interested, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

The Crystal ball us a joke. The "experts" are always making multiple guesses on it. You watch, once Bede gets past his official to Butler, they will start changing there predictions.

Not sure if anyone watched Isaiah Washington tonight in the elite 24 game...kids got a very impressive handle and shoots well from 3. Wright is obviously the instate target but I wouldn't be upset if we landed Washington instead.

I would be extremely happy if we landed this kid too, but I just am not very confident. If Syracuse offers, he is going there plain and simple. I think they will eventually. Their top 2 PG targets are Trevon Duvall and Quade Green, both appear to be leaning elsewhere. I could see them offering in the near future.

Meanwhile, I don't see the Gophers turning down a Wright commitment to wait and see what happens with Washington, if that scenerio played out.

Word on the street is that Wright has been hanging out on campus with the Gopher bball freshmen.

Scout and Espn both updated their rankings and Jericho made a big jump in both of them. He is now #67 overall on ESPN and #48 overall on Scout. Some other notable rankings:

ESPN

Nate Reuvers #85
Wabissa Bede #86
Isaiah Washington #96

Scout

Jacob Epperson #58
Isaiah Washington #65
Nate Reuvers #68
Wabissa Bede #73
Brad Davison #94

Intersting to note that Scout dropped Theo from a 4* to a 3* recruit.

Although Bede or Washington would be fine additions, but still think a McKinley signing sets us up well for 2018 kids, as well as a possible Matthew Hurt signing in 2019. Jericho is now a must get in this class. The length and athleticism (although raw) is ideal for Pitino's system. The 3 star status is about right for Theo.

To a hardened Gopher BB pessimist (realist?), missing out on Reuvers, Davison and Sims would signal the beginning of the end for the Pitino administration, even if they do get Wright and John. With the deepest and richest local class in recent memory, to come out with only two three-star recruits would be abysmal.

Seriously? You should just stop following the program if that is how you view it.

Haven't checked the rankings, but could one argue that Hurt, Coffee, and Curry are a better class than Davison, Sims, and Reuvers? I find it difficult to signal an end when he just landed his best class last year. It seems the arrow is pointing up (optimist) finally, so I don't want to be down on the program because pitino did not secure MN kids that he didn't prioritize.

Edit: Conspiracy Debunked!

I also wonder how long Pomeday has been looking for work outside of this team. Wasn't he the lead local recruiter? My conspiracy theory is that his heart hasn't been in recruiting/coaching for at least several months. It's not like he took a job on another coaching staff...

Ben Johnson is the lead local recruiter.

I'm not sold on Davison at all, missing on him is bleh.

Ruevers has pretty good offensive skills for his size, he would have been nice in a Gopher uniform but he has some limitations.

Sims would be a good fit, I hope Pitino can sign him.

I just don't see missing on all three being catastrophic at all, just part of normal recruiting.

The best route to signing the elite Minnesota kids in the future is to start winning consistently. If Bede or Washington is a better player than Wright, then sign one of them. I don't think any one Minnesota kid signing leads to a transformational group of kids wanting to play here. If it did, the Jarvis/Hurt/Coffey signings would have had an effect on the 2017 kids. Bring in the best talent from wherever you can find them and start winning.

Best class in recent memory? Deepest? Yes. Best? No, I'd have to go with Tyus, Reid, and Vaughn.

Alex Illikainen was a 4-star on ESPN while Murphy was a 3-star recruit, just sayin. These rankings are merely a guideline not gospel.

And to clarify, not predicting anything necessarily; just disappointed with who they went after and what will have gotten away, and describing how easy it is for a long-time fan to start to lose hope.

The 2017 class might not be as top-heavy as the 2014 one but given Pitino had no shot at landing Tyus and Vaugn and very little shot at landing Macura and Travis, it wasn't a huge knock on him missing those guys. Missing a bulk of the 2017 guys would be a huge blow because he's going into his fourth year as the team's coach - this is when recruiting should be established and if he's striking out on everyone, that's not good.

We can be as pro or anti Gopher as we want but the talent this state is producing now is better than its ever been from a volume standpoint and if Pitino isn't cashing in on that, he's missing a big opportunity.

Now the other side of that of course is that we don't necessarily need to just recruit the hometown kids. It bugs me sometimes how much the local media (Fuller, Wolfson et all) focus only on the local guys as Gopher targets while seemingly forgetting that we seem to be in on guys like Washington. It doesn't matter where the kids come from as long as they have talent. I get that wholeheartedly. But if you've got quality players - top 150 players - in your own back yard and you can't secure them, something isn't right.

It's not over yet and it seems like they are at least positioned well to get pledges from the remaining three high-major players but because they missed on Reuvers and Davison, they've put themselves in a position where they absolutely need some of these kids to pick them. That's not what you want in the recruiting game where every prospect is a lottery ticket.

You guys need to realize we are sitting about as good as one could hope with the remaining Big 3. The odds we get 2 of 3 are incredibly high. Save the doom and gloom for a time when its warranted.

He has landed 3/4 of the top Minnesota kids the last two classes and is well positioned with Wright, John, and Sims. We can't get every highly rated Minnesota kid but Pitino, in conjuction with Ben Johnson, are doing a fine job recruiting the state.
