All Things Gopher Baseball

Coach Gandossy joined the Ducks on the Pond podcast.

Cliff notes summary:
- No major injuries in fall
- Talks general recruiting stuff regarding Minnesota
- When asked for a pitcher and hitter to watch for this upcoming season, he named two each: Morton and Kruzan for pitchers, and Sutherland and Lippe for hitters.

Gophers release schedule. A midweek game at Florida Gulf Coast and a pair with Northeastern on the weekend in Fort Myers. 2 game midweeks at US Bank against Milwaukee and Gonzaga. Cambria Classic weekend features UNLV, South Dakota State and Omaha.

For those that follow more closely than me, what do you think we got for a team this year? Big 10 tourney, NCAA at large?

I only made it to a few fall practices. I think pitching will be better. Morton was sitting 93-94 on fastball and touched 96, and looked like good secondary stuff as well. Urban also looked like he had an uptick in velocity. Whelan had a good summer. Other additions looked like they will contribute on mound, and with guys back from injury (Selvig, Capamoccio), and returning experience (Sperry, Hemmesch), I am bullish on the pitching.

Hitting could be OK if a couple transfers pan out and a couple of returners improve and are more consistent and healthy (Sutherland, Martin, Spanier) join Neels and Richter.

I don't know on defense...just not sure how good some of the incoming position players are defensively.

A NCAA tournament bid would be a fairly big jump, but with an easier non-conference slate and assuming they don't suffer injuries like a season ago, I think better record and Big 10 tourney are certainly achievable.

Interview with Coach McDevitt from a few weeks ago. The one thing I found interesting was a comment regarding school policy on fall scrimmages making it hard to play outside competition (he didn't go into detail).

Rumor is Max Arlich is transferring to Gophers from Arizona State. Big if true.

As a true freshman he had 14.1 IP, 13 H, 3 ER, 10 BB, 13 K, 1.88 ERA
For Northwoods league last summer 30.0 IP, 23 H, 10 ER, 15 BB, 23 K, 3.00 ERA

One of the best prep pitchers in Minnesota for last 25 years.

Announced it on instagram yesterday, big pickup

It looks like the Gophers series at UCLA April 17-19th is a 'go' to be played at Jackie Robinson Stadium, as a federal appeals court overturns a previous court ruling which had invalidated their lease.

Eli Kokenge and Greyson Zach to play with Wilmar in Northwoods League.

Unfortunately, Northwoods League is moving their broadcasts to FloSports this season. 😞

Looks like Gophers received a 2027 commitment from Ethyn Cantin (Becker).

Coach Gandossy talks about his background, recruiting philosophy, Siebert Field, looks back at 2025, and forward on 2026 and more on this podcast.

Arlich not on roster. Sounds like he might be going JUCO route
With the December transfer I'm not sure he would be eligible until next season, that could be a reason for not being on roster and instead at JUCO. Looks like he has already pitched once for Chandler-Gilbert. Could still be here next fall or maybe they tried to get him a waiver for this spring and were denied.

Coach McDevitt previews the upcoming season on the Go Gopher podcast.

Cliff notes summary:
-- Improving depth was a priority in offseason.
-- Starting rotation will be Selvig (healthy/looks like new pitcher), Morton (high end stuff, best since Max Meyer), Kruzan.
-- Much deeper pitching staff this year. Thinks they may be able to go multiple innings with multiple pitchers.
-- Named Jaenke as someone to watch as newcomer, and Urban as someone whose stuff has improved.
-- Whelan has an injury and will not likely pitch first weekend, maybe 2.
-- Was shocked Neels was not drafted.
-- Likes up the middle with Spanier/Martin in infield and Richter in CF.
-- Named Sutherland as someone who has developed and Lippe as someone to watch from transfers.
-- McDevitt was able to focus more on pitching this offseason than last.

Hope it's ok to clog up this thread with a question - what is the general expectation of the team this year? Are we more optimistic than the past few years?

Related question, what is a good website or other source for CBB news - bonus if it would have any gopher mentions.

Thanks!

On the outlook, I think they will be improved. It would be hard to have as many injuries as last year, and I do like the pitching staff. If a couple transfers pan out and a couple returnees step up from the position players, definitely think they can improve on the conference record.

As far as local coverage, there isn't much regarding the Gophers. Nationally, d1baseball.com is probably the best known. It is a pay site, but has free podcasts. Baseball America is similar (pay site but has free college-specific podcasts). 11.7 is another popular podcast.

The bats are alive. 6 hits thru 2.1. A HR by Sutherland. Gophers have chased the Stetson starter. Score is 3-3 in t3
