All Things Daniel Oturu Recruiting Thread UPDATED: OTURU A GOPHER!

I would LOVE to get McHale in to work with our bigs. One of the smoothest, most effective low-post players in basketball history, who happens to be a proud Gopher alum, and seems to have a lot of free time on his hands. I can only imagine the improvement our bigs would show after Low-Post 101, instructed by Dr. McHale.

He did wonders for two other Kevin's

If Oturu had more of an expansive post game he would be a 5* prospect. We're really nitpicking. His raw tools are as good as any HS big in the country and he shows a feel on defense that's well beyond his age. His skills on offense will come in time and looking at where he is now compared to last year it should come quicker than later.

Against East Ridge and Ben Carlson his line: 29 points, 21 rebounds, 9 blocks, 12/18 from the floor and 5/6 ft while totally dominating a D1 prospect in Carlson. I would say he is ok.

I expect him to be starting center next year because of those defensive skills

I'll be curious to see if he is actually taller then Curry. Either way hard not to feel pretty good about our bigs next year.

Curry at the 4 and Oturu at the 5 will be elite, hopefully Murphy sticks around for this senior season.

I would think Matz will have something to say about the Center starting Job

If Matz is good enough to beat out Oturu, then next year will be a lot of fun.

if a 5th year senior who is taking up two years on scholarship for one year of eligiblity isn't good enough to beat out a true freshman then pitino absolutely blundered on what was a blunder of a use of scholarship to begin with.

Not necessarily.

per Sid:

• An update on the three Gophers men’s basketball recruits for next season: Cretin-Derham Hall’s Daniel Oturu is averaging 18.9 points and 12.4 rebounds; Orono’s Jarvis Thomas Omersa is averaging 20.0 points and 11.6 rebounds; and DeLaSalle’s Gabe Kalscheur is averaging 20.2 points and 5.2 rebounds.

I watched CDH and Oturo play against East Ridge this week. Oturo was unbelievable... maybe the best big man I've seen play HS basketball in MN. I don't think he took a shot outside of 5 feet. Dunk after dunk after....

He protects the rim on defense, grabs any rebound he wants, and is very athletic.

Shocking. You mean HS players almost universally would rather play in college than be paid? No one could've predicted that.

per Jace:

“I definitely know that I’m going to college, so I didn’t think much about it,” Oturu said.

Oturu did say the JBA, which will reportedly pay its players between $3,000-$10,000 a month, provides “a different opportunity” for players, just not one he plans on taking advantage of.

“I’m taking my talents to the U of M to continue to build something there,’ Oturu said. “Hopefully, from there in a few years I have the opportunity to play in the NBA.”

What a great situation for Oturu going to MN. Steps into a starting role and will get 30 min/game.

This. Add in Curry/Stockman and our potential 5s look much better than what we’ve had this year (once Reggie was suspended even more so)

STrib: Gophers recruit Daniel Oturu declines invitation to Lavar Ball's new league

Oturu, a 6-foot-10 center and four-star Gophers recruit, is among the top 50 players in the Class of 2018. So he was contacted by Ball, along with several other top prospects, about joining the league after their senior year.

The answer was simple for Oturu, basically, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

“It was weird, but it was also cool that he wanted me to play in his new JBA league,” Oturu said. “I already told him, ‘No, I’m going to college and I’m looking to make my state proud.’ That’s my goal. That’s been my dream. Nothing is going to change that.”

Like most ballers, Oturu has dreams of playing in the NBA someday, but Ball’s league didn’t interest him. That’s as far as the conversation went.

“It was nothing,” he said about the invitation. “I just wanted to straighten that out right away, so nobody got any ideas or anything. I just let him know I don’t accept the offer.”
