Harvard, MIT Sue Immigration Officials Over Rule Blocking Some International Students
Just two days after federal officials barred international students from attending U.S. colleges that go online-only this fall, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have made their objections clear. They sued the U.S. government in federal court Wednesday, seeking to have the U.S. Immigration Customs And Enforcement policy reversed and declared unlawful.

In the complaint, the schools condemn the agency's "arbitrary and capricious" decision.

No one knows for sure, but if the bolded above is (quietly?) the consensus of the experts, which are being briefed to political and school leaders, perhaps that is why decisions are going to be made soon regarding online only school for the fall and cancelled fall sports.

I dearly hope not. I am so fatigued of the virus and how much it has already ruined summer. No State Fair. If football gets cancelled too, damn that will suck.

Hospitalizations in Washington where I live just started creeping up when we've been seeing an increase in case the past 2 weeks, deaths are still about 2 weeks or so out I'd imagine...if the death increase doesn't show up, then great, but I'm not confident that it won't. I'm interested in what the University of Washington is going to do as they had 100+ Greek Life students get sick after a frat party, so I'm sure that is informing their decision on how it could potentially spread with more students on campus. I would not be surprised if most schools decide to do a hybrid approach, enough flexibility with some in person classes to keep international students and athletes on campus while keeping a good majority of the rest will be online and can be on or off campus.
 

I don't envy the people who have to make these decisions. On one hand they are obviously worried about kids and young adults getting sick and bringing the virus home and spreading it. And on the other hand they need to see the possibility of students mental and social health being more damaged (due to online learning) than what the virus can do to them physically.
And then on top you have to wonder if students will be able to actually learn and retain what they need to learn if they're online. From my experience (and others that I have asked) it is drastically more difficult to learn online and stay focused. Also many teachers seemed to put a lot less effort into teaching online. If they have to teach online for a full year will they put more or less effort in?
All of these factors I'm sure are being discussed. If they aren't able to do fully in school classes the smart thing in my view would be to do some sort of hybrid form.

Last March the Ivy League was the first to cancel their basketball tourney, which started the dominoes falling. Will be interesting to see if this is the start of another trend.
 

Harvard originally was also the first to announce fall in-person classes and got the ball rolling on that.

Now they clearly want to go online only, and are suing the administration’s absurd, illegal requirement for foreign students.
 

I'm kind of surprised that nobody has mentioned the possibility that the covid case spike could be due in part to the protests and riots in June.

Let's make another war comparison. Little over 58,000 military deaths in Vietnam in almost a decade. There have already been twice as many deaths from the virus in about half a year and the toll is climbing. Save the "They're almost old folks," B.S. They're still people whose lives have value and who were loved.

As far as the we're not as tough as the good old days, have you been paying attention at all? There have been countless stories about the bravery and sacrifices of doctors, nurses, and emergency people. Hell, how about store clerks, truckers, hospital janitors, meat packing workers, bus drivers, etc. who went to work everyday and possibly exposed themselves to getting sick? Yes, the economy needs to recover and kids should be in school but you seem mostly upset about no Gopher football.

I find it hard to believe that thousands and thousands of people huddled together for weeks hasn't contributed to the increase. I'm not saying that it is fully from protests but c'mon. Obviously the people going to bars and partying everywhere is also a huge factor but it's funny that people have tried to act like the protests couldn't be just as responsible.
Idk if it can really be proven either way but if the protests really didn't play a part in the outbreaks I question how that's possible.
 



I sent an email to the U of M ticket office a month ago about my SRO season tickets. There was zero response, which is not a good sign.

I guess I accepted the fact about six weeks ago that we would not be in the stadium this fall, even though I am all for the "let it rip" all open option with all elderly, overweight, diabetics, immune deficient and other at risk persons self isolated.

That is not going to happen, so I'll take my TV for this year.

I hate to see all of the NC games going away for this year.

Justin Gaard is still in insufferable D-bag, and not a friend of the Gopher Football Program. He is all about himself and a boring, paint by the numbers turdball. He promotes the demise of Gopher Football and school attendance every chance he gets on the radio. So much for "science". I'll stand by my assertion earlier that if our country was as risk adverse, and meekly cowardly as we apparently are now, we would have lost WWII and a lot more over the years.

Did you read the article? It explains it pretty simply. Protests were outside and had widespread mask usage and that is widely considered the reason why there is no increase related to protests.

The masks are a joke.

Watch the videos, even among the peaceful SJW/ snowflakes the mask wearing is spotty, and in most cases (like in the general population) people are just pretending to actually have a mask on, as they constantly move it around and touch their faces, pull it down to talk and pull it below their nose as i usually do to avoid the heat and nastiness on the rare occasion I wear a mask.

Masks are 100 percent virtue signaling and not much more, as currently implemented. Nurses and Doctors know how to utilize masks, the rest of us not so much. .... All for show

I'm pissed off that we took a mild pandemic and treated it like 1918. Yes, people are dying, but this one is milder than 1958 and 1968. We get a continuous stream of panic porn from the media, as the death counts keep dropping and we discover that half the population has existing coronavirus immunity...which means the whole thing will soon be over. The virus only transmits in close spaces like cruise ships, nursing homes and subways. It is not transmitted among the young, because of their strong immune systems.

The only reason to lock down was to give the hospitals space to handle the surge, then the governors decided they had to kill this highly infectious virus...so the hospitals lay at half capacity for weeks.

Our public health officials have been a cross between the Marx Brothers and the Three Stooges, our Governor gives ponderous briefings while locking out critical media. Meanwhile the majority of Minnesota deaths are among those with end-of-life directives.

Follow the science? The lockdowners followed a new and unproven response and moved our country several steps close to the boomer retirement debt bomb.

We could all use some Gopher football. None of them will be damaged by COVID-19.

The cases haven't spiked in Minnesota. How do you explain that, then?

Is it possible that everyone in Minn was wearing masks, and other states they weren't? Seems very unlikely, to my guess.

The protests were outside, in the relatively moving air. I think that's a big part of what helped the protests not result in a massive case spike.

Bolded: what about the people who get very ill and even die, who have none of those comorbidities, but are in fact healthy, young(ish) adults?

It is rare. But it happens. And science has no explanation, yet.

Rudy Gobert/Jazz still does not have a sense of taste/smell, 4 months later. I realize that that's much lower with regards to the other symptoms (understatement), but it still sucks. Would freak me out, and it does not seem that uncommon.

Yep. Guy on our block, in his mid/late 30's got it, "worst cold of my life", and still has some odd physical symptoms now, but mostly recovered.

The virus, if it is able to pick up enough steam .... it does something to your body. To your nervous system. To your vascular system. We see bits and pieces in people all the time, but don't know the true picture yet.

There could be a rash of people with debilitating degenerative disease in 20-40 years. This virus is very cruel, in some senses. Just wouldn't surprise me.

I still hold out hope, and plan on never getting infected. Maybe that is a pipe dream. Some posters on this board tell me I should go purposefully infect myself now, and I won't feel a thing. Of course, they themselves haven't taken that step, nor for their families.

Then again, who knows, maybe I already had it and never knew? I have not had an antibody test.
 


Today’s numbers in Minnesota: 251 patients hospitalized, which is the the lowest since 4/24. 116 in ICU, the lowest since 4/25

If that's the case then why is there even a discussion about whether football can be played and if fans can go to the games? Mandate that fans wear masks and we should be good to go.
 

As I say again - positive case means quarantine until you test negative. That is the issue facing sports.

Odds of players getting really sick or dying are very low. somewhat higher for older coaches and support personnel.

BUT - stop and think about this:

player tests positive and has to sit out until they test negative. that takes time. if multiple players on a team test positive, that team is scrambling just to field a team.

Want to watch a game where both teams are missing key starters? want to see the Gophers play a game when Morgan, Bateman and Ibrahim are sitting home on quarantine after testing positive? That is the issue with covid and college sports. It's not that players will die. it's that players who test positive have to sit out practice and maybe sit out games. coaches having to shuffle lineups and depth charts on a day-to-day basis depending on who is available.

it's not as simple as saying "nobody's going to die. let's play the games."

I disagree.

Everyone knows this year is going to have a giant, fat asterisk next to it. People are desperate for sports, especially football.

If you could guarantee that no one would get severely sick, and the only thing you had to deal with was players randomly needing to be quarantined throughout the season, teams and leagues would sign up for that in a second.

Everyone is scared it's going to be something worse than that.

Because no one complained about mask mandates... /s But really, if it was as simple as that, we'd have more evidence one way or the other about masks, yet people still oppose it.

And what do they do about income? If they're going to quarantine they need to be supported in some way, and we all know the long back and forth that happened to get one stimulus check.

Nobody is forcing anyone to play. Nobody is forcing anyone to work against their will. This is not the military, You have free agency.

Look at the numbers. Mitigate risk. If it is acceptable risk say so. If it is unacceptable risk say so. Will having school and/or athletics meaningfully cause more or less harm? There are other factors than viral illness to consider. Fair to disagree and bring evidence. Keep open minds.

Could happen. Regarding large holes in the rosters- might it be a great opportunity for the next Vince Papale or Rudy Ruettiger. Open try outs. Make your dream a reality.
