Oh man, the legal trouble the school/coaches would be in if they did this and a player got really sick/died due to contact...That's the main reason I don't think this would happen, too much heat if it got found out and caused something bad.

Harvard started the trend the schools announcing that there would be some kind of in-person class in the fall.

The timing of the case surge is just all wrong. Schools/orgs that large, simply can't turn on a dime. They have to make a decision, probably at least a couple months before the start, and just go with it, for right or wrong.

Legal team probably begging for no in-person classes.


Will be interesting if they still have in-person experience at all. Dorm rooms, cafeteria? If not, how can they possibly justify athletics?
 




Several teams will have herd immunity by then, so maybe it could work, but I’m not optimistic. I saw one very prominent Gopher begging people to wear masks on Twitter, so we can have fans in the stands, yet he continues to post photos on Instagram showing zero social distancing and no mask, ever.

Do you prefer random online opinions to be from licensed physicians, or are PhD scientists, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, MPH acceptable? How do you feel about DOs? Does the area of expertise matter - infectious disease only? Dermatology, gastroenterology?

Seems like a good time to raise season ticket prices across the board.

Wealthier programs like Alabama, Ohio State can weather the storm, but there are going to be a lot of public institution hats in hand by next year and athletics will be a red headed step child, most likely. Does the department have reserves?

There is some wild conjecture by licensed professionals on both sides, not just lay people. Some of it is extremely controversial - Pediatricians are calling for k-12 school to happen. Not remote zoom classes. In person classes with mitigations. The risks for college age are not appreciably higher. The administrators are in a bind to not look heartless while trying to communicate realities.

College aged students aren’t at much risk.

Professors, administrators, support staff, janitors, building maintenance, coaches, etc. are at risk.

Do students just serve all these roles this year?
 

Bringing up the previous failed attempts at a SARS1 vaccine is just fear mongering, at this point.

Who would do that?? What is their agenda??

If the actual scientists are confident in their SARS2 vaccine candidate, then that’s that, until it fails. Not before.

Until there’s a vaccine ready to deploy to billions of people, there’s a chance there will never be one.

All things have a chance greater than zero. Simply restating that fact, with respect to some specific future event, isn't meaningful.

Who are you to say the scientists are likely wrong about their confidence in their candidate, with significant probability? I say it's fear mongering. My opinion isn't worth much.
 



The Minnesota Collegiate Athletic Conference is a group of 24 Community Colleges, Junior Colleges and Technical colleges in MN, ND and Wisc. This includes schools in Rochester, Austin, Worthington and Willmar, among other places.

The Conference just announced that most Fall activities are canceled expect for.......mens and womens golf and clay target shooting. (football, volleyball and soccer all bit the dust.)

Also - sports that normally begin practicing during the Fall semester will not be allowed to hold any organized activities. That includes Basketball, Wrestling, baseball and softball. A decision will be made at a later date on whether basketball could begin playing games in January.

Are these schools holding in-person classes and labs? Was an explanation issued for the decision?

Legal and testing costs first and foremost. The cost vs benefit of eg testing and medical care for CC/JC is clearly different than Power 5. However, those issues are important...and will undoubtedly be exacerbated by a cadre if players that feel their lives are at significant risk for perceived little benefit to them a selves and will air their concerns publicly and the media will amplify. Another PR headache on top of everything else coming to a head.
 

Congress needs to indemnify in person classes now.

But it's all theater, this generation of Americans could never have discovered or built America.

No, continue protections for the vulnerable while achieving herd immunity as fast as possible.

You simply can't spend the equivalent of a couple Iraq wars every time there is a virus the kills the medically fragile while sparing the healthy and young.

We are almost there. This thing will be gone by September.

Yeah I don’t really don’t understand people who were saying move it to next spring. We are just as likely to have issues next spring as this fall.

only now Do I think we are close enough to start thinking about canceling the fall.
People who were saying it in April were flying blind. (They May end up being correct)

Nothing will be over until a vaccine arrives. And that is very unlikely to be in Sept.

I was talking about this calendar year/season, thought that context was obvious.

If no vaccine ever works, then eventually we’ll obtain herd immunity the old fashioned way. The virus does not appear to be mutating very fast, so we wouldn’t need to worry about a new strain popping up, like the flu.

The virus may naturally become more mild as the more severe cases are more likely to kill the host and/or be isolated and less able to spread.
A lot of moving parts
