All Things Class of 2025 Gophers Basketball Recruiting Thread

Why should there be? Invest 2+ years recruiting someone who may or may not come here? And if they do, have them leave after one year? No thanks đź‘Ž
I feel like focusing on the positive right now.

Lead me not into temptation. I pray that every night.

It's better to be Ben...make great money, do a good job...take a lot of blame and get fired.

Than to be 'successful'. Have tens-of-millions thrown at you...have millions thrown at your players...go around proclaiming lies about how it's about relationships, school, teamwork, caring, coaching ability...all lies.

No, these aren't the worst lies in the world. But they're still lies. And making huge money off of lies won't bring as much happiness as less money with truth.

A good job? We been a bottom 4 team record wise his entire tenure here.....

I notice of the 10 players the Gophers have right now 6 will be in their last year. Ben will have to get a lot of recruits and players from the portal again next year. Only (big) Mitchell, Betts, Asuma and Grove will be back.

Just as well. Most likely the new coach will be in year 0.

There's a pretty good chance a lot of coaches are going to have to do that every year

The way the system is set up that will be a yearly practice

If a coach wants a young team, he needs to coach a mid-major team which loses all it's veteran players to the portal.

Last week I looked through the freshman recruits for all 18 Big Ten teams. 12 of the 18 had two or fewer freshman recruits. Purdue was the big outlier with 6 freshman recruits and one other team had 5. Remaining "old" probably is the way it's going to continue in the near future for the majority of teams.

Think about it though- if the big boys are taking 2 out of HS instead of 3 or 4- that's a lot of pretty good HS players looking for a home. The coach that can get them and convince them to stay, might have a strategy...

Two year stints at a school will be pretty common. 4 and 5 star guys will go to big schools and leave for the draft if they're good. If not, they'll probably transfer because they were overrated or just didn't develop and will want a change of pace. The 3 stars that go to mid majors will get called up to the big league if they're any good. It's the average mid major player that might stick around for more than that, and even then they might want to transfer for a change of scenery or if they think they're not getting their due.

My point is that there were 130 4-5 star recruits last year. Let's say there are 30 tier one programs- if they are taking 2 instead of 3 or 4- then there are more on the table for us.

Yeah we can take them and develop them for 1 or 2 years. And as soon as they're good, they can transfer.

If you are only going to have them for a year or two anyway it's just better to go the portal route. Getting a guy who needs a year or two to develop is a waist of time.

They will sign 3 or 4 high school guys. Rogers, Amairi Allen, Barrett Loer and Detrich Richardson are the main guys they are after.

But we're in the same boat with older transfers too. Either they're not very good. Or they develop like Hawkins and leave for a big payday.

Exactly that's why I don't get the gripes and complaints about going after high school kids. Either way there will be kids who move on, but in my opinion, we are more likely to get multiple years from a freshman compared to a transfer

Well, we have recent evidence to test this theory. We recruited 4 freshmen from the 2022 HS class. One left after a year and the other three left after 2 years. So, if by "multiple years" you mean two years, I agree. But, we also got that much from Battle, will get the same from Mike Mitchell and Fox, and will get three years from Garcia.

But we're in the same boat with older transfers too. Either they're not very good. Or they develop like Hawkins and leave for a big payday.

First of all, many of our older transfers have been players with only one-year of eligibility.

Secondly, a clear majority of the players who have transferred here from other four year schools have been contributors. Going back to Pitino, I can think of only three complete duds:

Brock Stull,
Danny Ogele, and
Jack Wilson.

Two could earn dishonorable mention: Charlie Daniels and Davonte Fitzgerald. They did contribute something but fell well short of being worthwhile recruits. Fitzgerald was better than Daniels but he was here for three years and gave us only one mediocre year.

All the others were worth recruiting to one degree or another.

New NCAA agreement has unlimited transfer options, I hope they restrict mid season transfers though and come to an agreement with the NBA not to poach players mid season. Either of those and college basketball will be ruined completely.

you know the times are a'changing when John Calipari says he's going to change his approach to recruiting. from 247 sports.com:

Another wrinkle to Calipari's new formula is relying on less freshman than he has in the past. During his 15 years at Kentucky, Calipari consistently had the top high school recruiting classes year-to-year, usually bringing in five-or-more freshmen every cycle.

"I think of last year's team and what we were able to do with so many young guys," Calipari said. "The lesson was, you can't do this now with seven freshmen, you just can't. You're going to hit a team that's 25 years old on average, one was 26 and that team is physically going to get you. Now, we have a couple transfers that are older, some kids that transferred from Kentucky that went through it that are a year older and some freshmen."

"We're not going to take six, seven freshmen now," Calipari said. "It'll be three or four. Hopefully retain a few, get a couple transfers, and that is the formula...today."

I think we should bring back Nate Mason, Jordan Murphy, Daniel Oturu, and some others...and have an older stronger team.

honestly don't know why a school like Kentucky wouldn't have done this earlier. Get 1-2 top 50 recruits and add in a bunch of all conference transfers and you've got the team to make the FF every year given you should have the finances to do this. weird world now where you're essentially scouting every game/team in the country all year long in addition to what you're doing with HS athletes. of course there will definitely be no tampering ever.
