Interesting, though, that 5/20 is the end of the NLI period (although you never have to sign even if committing/signing financial aid during the period). Maybe there is some other significance to the date... but I'd guess the 5/21 doesn't hold.
 

Final rivals rankings for the 2015 class are out. Kevin Dorsey moves from #87 to #108 and gets downgraded from a 4 star to a 3 star. Dupree at #135. No Jarvis. I would like to hear the reasoning for Dorsey getting downgraded, he had an excellent season this year. It really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things anyways.

I think we may still be in for a surprise. Maybe I'm misremembering, but it seems we are digging deeper and have better options than previous spring recruiting periods. It's pretty clear they will be using both scholarships and I agree with SS, they probably won't take another multi-year transfer. The one
I like is Gilbert. He may not have the offers because he committed to George Mason pretty early, but has good length, and I've always liked players from Philly.

Can I suggest you support your Minnesota Twins?

I'm a Brewers fan. They suck. I'll be watching the Bucks until they are out.

I live and die with the Gophers dude. I just wanna know next years roster so we all can go gopher hole on next years expectations.

Here is my not so bold prediction. We will sign 3 this spring and we will still have a scholarship open by tipoff.
 

I really like Ellison. If we land him I think Ellison and Dorsey might be neck and neck for the best recruit in the class
 



Does anybody know if any of these bigs we're recruiting are a significant upgrade in terms of rebounding? I would feel a lot better about the coming season if we were getting something approaching Mbakwe type production on the boards.

I think Boucher put up pretty good rebounding numbers this year, but I don't know if he would be able to get that many in the Big Ten if he came here. Not sure on the number though. Thought I saw someone post about 10 boards a game on here before

As a former resident of Philadelphia, I would generally agree, but I hope he doesn't have the same behavioral problems of the last star from Constitution High School who was kicked off the UNLV squad. Gilbert was a two time PA state champion and an all city player. It's a bit tougher to gauge the significance of that today because Philadelphia, like most major cities, has been a bit depleted by the prep school phenomena.

He's often the one recruit never discussed here, but he has the chance to make an immediate impact too. I am really excited about this class, hopefully they come through and Pitino can keep building on it.

None of the bigs I am aware of are the bouncy, physical presence of a Mbakwe. Boucher is very thin and will probably play a lot on the perimeter for whoever signs him. Russo has put some weight on his frame, but he still wouldn't be confused for being a physical player at the 4 spot. Jordan Caroline is probably the closest of the three to a Mbakwe type, but from the very little I have seen of him he doesn't appear to be especially explosive.

Always has been my "favorite" of the group. Scoring ability and versatility, style = special. The possibilities with McBrayer are large.

Have you seen him play? I'm intrigued by his "style" as you say, but unfortunately the videos on him are very limited.

Yes. I have seen all the Gopher commits play in person (and within the past 9 months in person, for each of them). Big time bucket-getter and can do so against any defense (style, size, etc). Shot selection, limiting turnovers will be key of course. In terms of comparisons, you'd compare him to Los Morris... confident, ability to rack up points quickly.. but Dupree's upside is higher. Will be fun to watch at a minimum.. I think he'll produce at a nice level offensive.. the question is when? If Lofton is there, with Morris and the other young guards.. lots of guys on the court who can score.

McBrayer is slim with a baby face, but he's confident with the ball in his hand against whoever wants to challenge him

I said, 'Listen, let's see how you do in class and with some community service -- a bunch of things -- and see how it goes. Not making any promises, but maybe we'll re-evaluate it later on.' It's a long shot certainly, but I didn't want to leave the kid out high and dry. I wanted to make sure he had an opportunity, because we have a scholarship.

Interesting - thanks for the info. You would have to think Pitino will use up his scholarship though, unless he's just really struggling to find quality players. I was at the scrimmage last year and Lofton was an embarrassment. He's definitely talented though.....

Yes, attitude. He was arguing with his teammates, not hustling at all and sulking. I wasn't the least bit surprised when he got the boot. It's really too bad - he seems to possess the skill set to be a strong contributor.

At that point he had just joined the team and the U.

Pretty risky if you ask me. What would he have left, one year?

Assuming he kept up with his studies at the U, he still should have 2 years of eligibility remaining. Even though he was booted from the program it's still sitting out so if he's on track to graduate he should be able to play in 2015-16? Not sure about that, sound right GW? Anyone?

Agree that it's risky. Will be interesting to see how the Lofton situation plays out.

If I were Pitino I'd offer him a spot on the team as a walk-on for his Junior year with the opportunity to earn a scholarship for his senior year, if he didn't act like a cancer etc.

Yep, as long as the academic requirements were there, I think he's fine in terms of completing his one-year in residence requirement.

Definitely risky. Gopher sports have taken plenty of risks in recent years (speaking on men's bball & football) - some were wise, some not IMO, but life is about risk/reward. Have to look at a number of factors.

The reality is if you're a good player, Minnesota as an institution is going to take more of a risk when it comes to decisions involving you. Different rulebook for different people. Not uncommon in sports.

But on Lofton.. if the issues were mostly attitude and he's done things to help his own cause, I think that makes the decision easier on the U. Since he's a Minnesota kid and a fun player to watch, I'm selfishly hoping he re-joins the team and has a standout couple of seasons.
