All Things Chet Holmgren Recruitment Thread (Class of 2021, Gophers Have Offered)

I could see him picking Michigan, he and Dickinson would be quite the twin towers and there probably aren’t many better coaches for big men than Juwan Howard. If he doesn’t pick Minnesota of course.

Maybe Ben Johnson offers Minnehaha head coach Lance Johnson a position on the coaching staff.

Kevin Lynch said it sounds like they had already made their decision but just hadn't announced it yet.

Well, do you remember Adam Morrison? Colossal bust. I'm not saying Kispert will be a bust but there certainly is a precedent for that. Actually, if you look at all the Gonzaga players who have gone into the NBA in this century, only the following have been good:

Domantas Sabonis
Brandon Clark

Kelly Olynk has been average over his career.

Rui Hachimura has been all right over his two years but nowhere near the top of his draft class. He plays a lot but he plays for a terrible team.
I was at the Hofbrahaus in Munich in 2006. Ran into some other American college students who attended Gonzaga. Got to talking about Morrison. Many hours later I left?? and eventually found my way back to a place to sleep (allegedly, do not remember) so I’ll always like Adam Morrison

Gonzaga C Oumar Ballo has entered the transfer portal. Would have been a big body protecting Chet

Holmgren will be a lock in pro basketball if he plays either for Gonzaga or Black Hills State College {truth, they have BB team}....If by miracle he stays home and rescues the Gophers from college basketball oblivion, he will own the state like no college basketball predecessor before him. The top ranked player in the country playing for the Gophers, a hero of sort who possibly turns the basketball program into Big Ten respectability. Yes Chet Holmgren will end up as a pro-player no matter where he plays in college, although the kid that stayed home would become a worthy Minnesota Gopher Legend....

All true but what so many of these kids want is to increase their brand.

Why would Black Hills State University (not college) not have a basketball team?

Black Hills State Yellow Jackets! Spearfish...home of Crow Peak Brewing.

Chet should go straight to pro.
Am I missing something here? And I am really talking out of school here. I realize he is skilled and would probably rip up college ball as a freshman. But he will be pushed and shoved around with ease in the NBA until he puts on about 40 pounds of muscle, won't he? He is a rail. I dunno, there's some guy on the floor for the Bulls that looks a lot like his body type.

Kevin Durant was at 215 during the draft. Chet is listed at 190. I think in a NBA strength program he could easily add 20-30 lbs of muscle in a year.

See Kevin Garnett...

Y’all act like Chet is going to play on the block in the NBA. He is going to guard stretch 4s and 5s. He isn’t matching up against Shaq, Ewing and Zo. You don’t think he can guard Juancho Hernangomez? That dude spends less time in the lane than a teen while texting and driving.

There's more to playing SF in the NBA than guarding one-on-one on the perimeter.

I’m aware. But he doesn’t have to gain 30-40 pounds like people are saying. He’ll get bigger and stronger and better.

There is a story of an future NBA hall of famer who is 7ft tall and couldn’t do the bench press once at the draft combine. Its 185lbs for reference.

Interesting point. And, with respect - I said I'm talking out of school here......but:

http://www.ibiblio.org/craig/draft/1995_draft/scout/pf.html#Garnett

Name: Kevin Garnett
College: Farragut High School
Height: 6-11
Weight: 215
Position: Power Forward
Other positions: Center
Strengths: Potential
Weaknesses: Strength, Age
Posted elsewhere but it was common knowledge that Kevin was over 7 feet and 200 lbs or a bit under coming out of high school. Flip famously said he was 6'13".

Porn dog nails it. But I don’t think it makes any sense for Chet to be a Gopher. Why live in the same place when you have a choice? He may never choose who he plays for again. If I’m Chet I’m going wherever I feel the most comfortable with the system and team. You want him to spend his one year working to raise the local program to respectability? I’m sure he is chomping at the bit to line up with Sly Sutherland, Luke Lowe, Battle and the other guy. Who would choose to put themself into that type of hell?

This got me thinking about how many NBA players couldn't do one rep.

Agreed, no way he was over 200 pounds. Chet will be fine
