All Things Cedric Tomes Recruitment Thread (2026 Guard, East Ridge HS, Commits to Gophers)

East Ridge senior quarterback and Gophers basketball recruit Cedric Tomes will miss Friday’s football game against Hopkins and be sidelined up to eight weeks with a broken finger.

Currently in a cast, Tomes is expected to have surgery Thursday on his left index finger and non-shooting hand.

The 6-1 dual-threat signal caller suffered the fracture four plays into last Thursday’s 41-0 opening loss at Minnetonka.

“It’s not too long of a recovery, so I’m excited to get that going,” Tomes told Strib Varsity. “I was taking an outside zone and running the ball. A helmet hit my finger. I got up and didn’t really feel the pain at first, but I looked down and my finger was sideways.”

Go Gophers!!

Admittedly, I have not seen Cedric play, but, some who have, indicate he needs to seriously work on his foot speed. Fortunately, foot speed can be improved through concentrated effort!

You’re slow you’re probably going to stay slow. Hopefully the some who indicated are wrong.

One's foot speed can be increased. From quick to quicker. From slow to not as slow. Not saying Cedric is slow, just saying foot speed can be made quicker through hard work and commitment in order to compete in the Big Ten.

East Ridge senior quarterback and Gophers basketball recruit Cedric Tomes has been cleared to play after recovering from a broken finger.

Tomes had surgery on his left index finger after he was injured during a Sept. 2 loss against Minnetonka. It’s uncertain whether he will start Friday against rival Stillwater.

A 6-1 dual-threat player, Tomes combined for 1,678 yards and 20 touchdowns passing and rushing last season.

A healthy diagnosis for Tomes is also a good sign for his senior year in basketball at East Ridge. He joined fellow Class of 2026 commit Nolen Anderson of Wayzata on an official visit with the Gophers last weekend.

Basketball future took a back seat as East Ridge’s Cedric Tomes made a football comeback

The first thing that flashed through East Ridge senior Cedric Tomes’ thoughts after his left index finger bent sideways after a helmet hit on the first drive of the football season was thankfully it wasn’t his shooting hand.

The 6-1, 180-pound quarterback with arguably the best three-point shooting stroke in the state of Minnesota has a future playing point guard for new Gophers basketball coach Niko Medved.

Still, not long after starting his recovery, Tomes could think only about returning to the gridiron.

His dedication to teammates and football resulted in Tomes playing well enough late in the season to help the Raptors (5-4) advance to Friday’s Class 6A playoff game against top-seeded defending state champion Maple Grove.

“This is exactly what I came back for right here,” said Tomes, who combined for 260 yards and four touchdowns in last week’s 28-20 win against Andover. “Moments like these and building it with these guys. This is a family right here, and I love these guys. We’re so tight, and it’s an amazing feeling.”

This time next year, Tomes will be on the University of Minnesota campus getting ready for his debut with the Gophers basketball team. Right now, he’s inspiring East Ridge’s football team.

“He’s just a special human being who lifts everyone up around him no matter what he’s doing,” East Ridge football coach Dan Fritze said. “He’s also a true competitor. And competitors don’t back down. There was a time we thought he was out for the season, but he wanted to fight his way back.”

They actually need one impact big!

I have no idea if Tomes can defend but that dude can shoot and flat out score the basketball. It's a very small sample size but I can't wait to see him at The Barn.
He is the leading scorer in Mn in class 4, and was near it last year.
He is quicker on defense than former Tartan standout Jake Sullivan, who had a fine career at Iowa State,

I am started to get excited about this class. I think the big Mpoyi is going to be a surprise and the two Minny kids look good!
I can't find a ton of footage of him playing, so in the limited games I've seen, I really like him as a prospect.

I say this as a compliment, but he is your typical athletic project big. Frankly, if he was consistently as good as his best moments, he wouldn't be coming here. He has flashes where he looks like an NBA player. He is big. He moves well. He can catch the ball and he seems to play hard.

When he isn't being aggressive, he just kind of disappears. I shouldn't have seen so many layups by his 6'2" opponents (never his guy, but you'd expect a kid with his frame to just erase the lane entirely). He can look a little Ralph Sampsion (version 3), where you wish he'd just grab the ball and dunk and instead he gracefully lays it in. Leave that Sh!t for the small forwards. To be honest, most of these critiques could have been said at times about the youngest version of Daniel Oturu.

All of that said, there is a player there. The things he lacks at times seem to be about experience rather than ability. Niko got Grayson Grove to look like Chris "Birdman" Anderson in the second half on Friday, so I am more confident than I've been in a long time that we can get the best out of this kid.

Tomes looks like he has filled out quite a bit since last season, he can definitely has a complete scoring arsenal and his range is the gym. His ability to defend will determine how much he plays as a freshman but he will definitely be in the mix. The one spot is in good hands with Tomes, Willis and Asuma, need an Austin Hollins/Gabe K type type at the two spot to portal in so Kai isn't the only bigger two guard option as BJ just isn't reliable.

The biggest needs next year are definitely a scoring wing to replace Tyson, and an athletic big guard to replace Reynolds. I see Wayzata's forward Anderson as a bit of a combo forward. I don't think he is athletic as Tyson, but he is more than Durkin. But I don't expect major minutes from him as a freshmen.

While it would have been great to get SG Wiggins, who is going to Iowa St., hopefully we can get '27 Wing Baboucarr Ann, who is long, athletic, and a good shooter. We also offered a 4 star out of Milwaukee, Jalen Brown, 6-5 190, I am not sure on the odds we can get him?

I appreciate all of the updates and info on potential recruits, especially on the local kids. For all of the grief we gave Sid over the years, he always did a great job providing Gopher fans with these kind of recruiting morsels.
