All Things Amir Coffey Thread - UPDTAED: A Gophers Commit!

let's see here:

started training kid at 1-year old
demanding schools send game tapes so Dad can decide whether their system fits his kid
dictating to coaches what position his kid has to play

Let's face it - if this guy's name was Richard Smith or Richard Jones, and he was not a former Gopher player, most people on this board would be calling him a nutcase, or worse.

This is going to be interesting to see if Pitino is confident enough to tell over-involved parents like Coffey where the line is drawn. If the price of recruiting this kid is to give Dad de facto veto power over how his kid is coached, then I say let him walk. Go out and find a player who will put the team 1st.

Let's see now...Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Waco or Minneapolis? I'm thinking we're still on top.

In light of his dad's comments about him being a "point guard," I'll be interested to see where Coffey plays at Hopkins this year, because I don't remember him playing much (any?) PG last year. In the team camp highlights above, looks like he sometimes initiates the offense and leads the break, and other times is on the wing... which is what a 3 could do in our system.

I would think he'll handle the ball a lot more this year for Hopkins with Chambers gone. For the Gophers sake in recruiting Amir, I hope Carlos Morris has a big year playing the wing. I think it was Coach McHale that was quoted saying Morris is a really good passer. While he is shorter than Amir, they have a similar build and maybe Carlos could put some "film" out for Richard Coffey to see how a wing can thrive in our system.

Amelia on Amir's recruitment:

What are your feelings about Amir Coffey? Can he play PG for Pitino's system?
by J Rico 12:46 PM

I think his dad wants him to play PG somewhere, but I don't think it will be at Minnesota.

how come Amir Coffey not to MN in future??
by tim 12:57 PM

I just don't see Pitino playing a 6-foot-8 guard at the point. That's the size of his power forwards right now.

Go Gophers!!

What's that based on? Coaches have built offenses around tall point guards before if it's the right talent (Johnson, Hardaway, etc.). Does she think Pitino wouldn't or couldn't do that?

Coffey may very well elect to play elsewhere when all is said and done, but I highly doubt it would be because Pitino refuses to play a 6-8 stud at the point. I'd like to think that he's flexible and imaginative enough to make that arrangement successful.

Did she say Amir was 6'8? Huh? He's a legit 6'5, maybe a legit 6'5.5. 6'8 is really stretching it.

He is not shy of Alex Iillikainen by much at all. I wouldn't say he is 6'-8", but seems over 6'-6" to me when I've seen him this summer.

I don't pay much attention to Amelia's opinions... Now Martin has to get stronger? When he is already built like a upperclassman?

"He'll get plenty of chances from the start in subbing in for King. Martin is as athletic as can be and has the potential to be a great rebounder. He just needs to get stronger and key in defensively"

The ranking, good for him, he is a real talent. But get over it, he is NOT, NOT coming to Minnesota! (but we will get over it when we make the run to the Sweet 16 the year he graduates.) He is media savvy like his dad, he's not going to say anythink negative about the gophers. If it was his dad's choice, he would be going to N. Carolina for sentimental reasons but I think it will likely be Kentucky, Florida or Iowa St.

What's wrong with optimism on a beautiful Friday!?

I think we'll have a legit shot at Amir. Pitino is proving to be an elite recruiter and the program is considered on the rise, both by locals and national media.

If he is NOT NOT coming - then he is coming! Welcome aboard young Mr Coffey!

Gotta love when someone has a super strong opinion about something they have no first hand knowledge on. Priceless.
