I must say... I was pretty surprised when I just saw this on twitter just because it seems kind of earlier for Indiana to offer him, but it just shows how good he's going to be! GOphers gotta land him!
 


not sure why marcus takes a negative on everything. we're more competition for iu than iu is for us. and alex is going to get offers every bit as good or better than iu before all is said and done.

It's his schtick. I'm more confident about Alex than any other of the top recruits in 2014 or 2015.

Indiana men's basketball coach Tom Crean on Wednesday offered Alex Illikainen of Grand Rapids, Minn., a tender. Other new offers for the 6-foot-8 incoming junior include one from ex-Gophers coach Tubby Smith at Texas Tech, plus offers from California and Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Coaches scouting Illikainen in person include Crean, Bo Ryan, Roy Williams, Bill Self, Dana Altman, Fred Hoiberg, Tony Bennett, Danny Manning and Tim Miles.

Have met Alex Illikainen, great kid. Very athletic big player who has worked on his outside shot and will really fit into Coach Pitino's style of play. If Coach Smith was still here, had heard he more than likely would have gone to an outstate school (Kansas/Oregon) but with Coach Pitino, we have a shot. Let's hope he commits to the University of Minnesota Gophers!

Thanks, Jeff. The Gophers staff has already started to make inroads with those two 2015 recruits, both of whom were offered by Minnesota quickly. Ellenson, in particular, has been around campus quite a bit with brother, Wally on the current team. Still a long ways to go with these guys, so it’s hard to get any real sense of where they will ultimately go right now – I don’t think either of them have any idea, either.

NY2LASPORTS.COM - UPDATE WITH 2015 PF ALEX ILLIKAINEN

One of the many players across the country who took full advantage of the July evaluation period, Grand Rapids (Minn.) 2015 Power Forward Alex Illikainen is now in a great spot in his recruitment. Illikainen is now up to 12 offers, which seem to get bigger and bigger as he prepares for his junior season.

Minnesota: “I’ve been down there a couple times to talk to the new coaches. I’m just really getting to know them. They’ve been out to see me. We’re just getting that relationship started.”

really hoping i can make it over to watch him play while i'm living in Duluth. seems like he's really gonna be a solid guy
 

not exactly news worthy or anything but I go to school at UMD, and have been good friends with this girl from the Duluth area that also goes to UMD for 3 years now, and I just learned yesterday that she is cousins with Alex. She has the same last name as him, I just never put 2 and 2 together, and I feel really dumb for not realizing it until now.

In case your wondering, I did my part and encouraged her to encourage him to become a UMD BULLDOG!(just kidding, told her to make sure he picks the gophers or our friendship is over!) also she had no insight info about his recruitment to share with me but she did say she will try to introduce us to each other some time, so maybe I can dig up something or at least encourage him to become a gopher.

How do you guys see Illikainen's recruitment playing out? I don't know much about where he's leaning. All I know is that he's a good looking ball player and he's visiting ISU this Sunday.

Most feel he will be a Gopher with Kansas being the team to be most concerned about. They're yet to offer, though.
 








So I hung out with alex's cousin over the weekend, I will admit she really doesn't know much about the whole recruiting process, but I mentioned Travis to her, and she said, she thinks that he was "the guy" who their family was watching closely because they play the same position. So I guess if there are any positives with the whole Reid Travis thing, its that him picking another school probably helps our chances with Illikainen.

I tried to get more info out of her, but all she wanted to do was "drink and have fun" and I guess Alex Illikainen's recruitment did not fall in that category for her
