All Things 2026 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

Veteran guy. Won’t be a big time arm or anything but a bit of an upgrade. I don’t expect them to make big trades for bullpen help but they gotta at least try a little bit.

Twins sending 8th rounder from last year Ryan Sprock back for him. Twins also getting international bonus pool space.
The bar is "is he better than Eric Orze?"

I didn't know that either. I'm sure he won't hit .300 over a larger sample, but he's better than most back-up catchers.

They really should just trade Jeffers if the return is decent. I'd offer him to the Yankees but instead of prospects, demand their 3rd best reliever.
You wanna acquire Brent Hedrick🤯

Derek, please stop playing Tristan Gray....

You know the scene in Moneyball where Beane tells Howe that he can't start Pena that night. And there's a back and forth argument where Howe says it's his lineup card and he'll start who he wants. Then Beane reveals he can't start Pena because he's been traded. Zoll or whoever is now making the decisions should do that.

No one will trade for Gray. Just DFA him and call Arcia back up.

Twins have claimed Jack Anderson who was DFA’d by Boston, per Atterbury.

I get the logic. They’ve given their relievers a legit shot, so you might as well claim some free arms, in case you run into a Stewart or Gomez, and if you get a guy to help and you need one less arm, than maybe you get acquire a better arm/s as you have more capital for trades,

Via Treaure Island -

Garret Acton is starting his rehab at A ball. I liked him before he got hurt, 2.7 ERA & 1.05 WHP, in a limited sample size.

Her is the Twins top 4 picks and The Athletic’s Draft Guru’s scouting report.

First Round
Vahn Lackey might be a generational talent, and the long-term answer for the Twins behind the plate. He’s an outstanding athlete who’s played multiple positions and only became a full-time catcher this year, when he also broke out at the plate thanks to some swing adjustments, going from six homers as a sophomore to 20 as a junior. He has an excellent approach, should end up with 55-60 grade power, and is even an above-average runner. I think the Twins will end up with the best player in the class, and they have to be ecstatic that it fell this way. — Keith Law

Second Round

Carson Tinney
C, Texas
Carson Tinney is huge for a catcher, but he’s been at least adequate at the position and has a plus arm, and if he can stick there he has the power to be a good backup or occasional regular. It’s power over hit, but it might be 80 raw power; last year, while he was still at Notre Dame, his 90th percentile EV was 111.1 mph, and this year at Texas he bumped that up to 112.3 mph, both times ranking in the top 10 among all qualifying hitters. I have questioned the hit tool based on his in-zone whiff rates, but he really cut that down in the last month or so of the season, even against good competition. — Keith Law

Brett Renfrow (No Report)
RHP, Virginia Tech

Third Round
Ethan Wachsmann ((No Report)
RHP, Grandview High School (Aurora, Co.)

After so many years lacking catching depth, Twins now have a spoil of riches - Jeffers, Caratini, Tait, Diaw (sp?), Lackey and maybe Tinney.

I would guess Tinney is a candidate to move to 1B if needed.

I have to believe this means there’s little to no chance Jeffers resigns. The Twins likely wouldn’t want to offer more than a year or two and I doubt he’ll sign for that short of a contract.

They said on the radio that Vaughn might be a guy who doesn’t need to play a lot in the minors to get to The Show.

Jeffers is a reliable catcher, but he’ll get gratuitously overpaid; he’ll be 30 next season, has a career .756 OPS and his throwing and pop time are significantly below average, although he’s good at framing- below average defensively. Caranti is slightly worse overall as a catcher, but a better framer.

We can’t allocate those types of resources for him and we Caranti signed for next season / that’s why they gave him a two year deal, to be a bridge as they likely knew they wouldn’t be offering Jeffers a new contract.

I've been on board with not trading Larnach and even keeping him next season. But he's been downright awful in LF lately. Letting multiple balls fall in front of him that should be caught, including the one that tied the game yesterday. And lost another one in the sun that Keashall saved him from.

I was thinking the same thing as the third or fourth ball dropped right in front of him.

He’s hitting well enough to garner some interest, but I’m one of those guys who still values defense, so I’m fine with him leaving

Now with Lackey and the depth at C, I'm ready to move on from both Jeffers and Larnach at the deadline. Larnach isn't good enough defensively and hasn't developed enough power.

FWIW -Baseball Savant concurs, with you gents. Tasty 85 batting value and way below average fielding value of 29.

That's putting an awful lot of faith in a couple catching prospects that haven't proven anything yet. As noted earlier in this thread Alex Jackson was the #6 overall pick and one of the best hitting prospects in 2014.
