All Things 2026 Gophers Spring Ball Thread (Tweets, Videos and More)

Love the orange jersey for guys who are standing out to foster competition across practices. I remember Kill did the brown jersey for slackers, this is a nice alternative to light a fire under some of these dudes in a positive way amd not alienate anyone.

Not super encouraging that Perry Thompson was getting chided for a lack of effort this early into spring practice. Dude should have a chip on his shoulder wanting to prove he deserved more playing time at Auburn. Hoping he's more than Dylan Wright 2.0.

That has to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen! Who in their right mind would think that’s good for your players? Full speed right at the knees? 2 players? That’s just begging for a blown knee or ankle. Find a safer hitting drill, no problem with the hitting it’s the how they chose to set this up that’s the issue.

Interestingly enough, SEMO’s Head Coach, Tom Matukewicz, was an assistant of Jerry Kill from 2000-2010 and was the interim coach for Northern Illinois during their 2010 bowl game when Kill left for Minnesota

What is even the goal of this drill. 1 on 3, RB getting hit from multiple angles....seems like a great way to get guys hurt.
Yeah, this seems like one of those old school, "show me how tough you are" drills. We used to do a drill back in high school, where 8 players would form a circle around one guy in the middle. Coach would call out a number (1-8) and they would run in and hit the guy in the middle as hard as they could, just to see if they could knock him down. A new number would be called as soon as the guy in the middle disengaged with the player who just hit him. Hated that drill. I don't think anyone every got seriously hurt but to this day I am not sure what the point of that was. I'd like to think we have advanced beyond stupidity at this point.

Gophers football open first spring practice with renewed energy

Minnesota’s Gophers football team held an intense, physical spring practice Saturday inside their indoor practice facility in Athletes Village, their third session of the spring and first in full pads.

With the coaches yelling instructions and music blasting throughout the building, the practice featured multiple position groups rotating between drills, scrimmages and situational periods.

Coach P.J. Fleck said the team is working with a larger roster than usual, which has changed how practice is run.

“This is the largest number we’ve had in spring ball in a very long time,” Fleck said. “So we’re practicing a little bit longer than we normally practice… but the twos, threes and fours, I mean, they’re getting an enormous amount.”

Drills ranged from tackling work with padded equipment to quarterback throwing session. Late into practice, the team simulated real game situations, with the speakers playing crowd noise and referees calling penalties and two-minute timeouts.

One of those sequences ended with the offense winning a scrimmage rep and running to grab Paul Bunyan’s Axe, a nod to Minnesota’s rivalry with the University of Wisconsin. Fleck wanted a rivalry period because of the four rivalry games this season.

One of the biggest takeaways from Saturday was the competition at wide receiver, a group that struggled with consistency last year.

Receivers rotated through passing drills and scrimmage reps while working on timing and catches.
