I should have added to the ideal backup criteria list: is not trying to be a starter!


Lot of people think that instantly removes Cousins and Rodgers from the list. I agree for Cousins, I think he still have enough juice and now he will not be only a year removed from Achilles rupture ... he just wasn't the same physically last year. I'm not as sure for Rodgers. If he deices to roll the dice by passing on Pittsburgh ... where else is left? He has one year left in the tank. A ring with half a season or less of physical wear and tear is worth more than a full season of wear and tear and probably no ring. My opinion

Rodgers: $10M or less, one year. Primary role mentor. If McCarthy falters and/or tweaks the injury, then he can come in and be the hero. This is a Super Bowl built team. Win now.

Come on dude. We just traded for Sam Howell to be the got damn backup to JJ McCarthy. Aaron Rodgers is not coming to Minnesota. End of the story. Now can you move on from Aaron Rodgers and get him off this thread.

If I follow you correctly, you're saying a thing like "he has so much money, he doesn't need to take a non-start job".

I'm saying a thing like "he has so much money ... he doesn't need to do anything. He can just well retire. But what would actually be a worthwhile proposition for him to not do that?"


I could well be shown wrong, but I think a ring -- even if he wasn't the starter for most of the season -- is a more inciting proposal than being the starter on a team that has no realistic shot at the Super Bowl this coming season.

He could be our Nick Foles.

I don't think they would, assuming good health for the current QBs on the roster.

The Vikings are built similarly to how the Chiefs were in Mahomes 2nd season, which was his first as a starter. They ended up being a 1 seed and losing to the Patriots in the AFC championship game. Mahomes then won the Super Bowl the following season. You know who the backup QB was? Chad Henne who hadn't started a game in 4 years.

Howell is a capable backup who still has upside. He can win games. NFL teams don't want Rodgers because he's old, washed up, and he brings a media circus to town in the same way most teams don't want to be on Hard Knocks.

Aaron Rodgers will never be a Viking so it's time to move on. The top 3 QBs on the roster next season will be JJ, Howell, and Brosmer.

A reasonable level headed person can determine Rodgers has not had a decent season since 2021. The Packers got better after he left. The Jets won more games without him in 2023 than with him in 2024.

40 year old QBs not named Tom Brady just don't lead NFL Teams to Super Bowls.

Feels like this is a bit you’re running into the ground now. I don’t think anyone can presume to get into Aaron Rodgers head and if one thing has been demonstrated by him over the last several years is he doesn’t have the humility to quietly step into a backup/advisor role for a young QB.

Think you are totally missing the issue and Rodgers mindset. Again, for the 30th time among people on here. He's not coming unless he's promised the starting job. It's why talk with him fizzled.

Hard to take an article seriously that doesn't mention Dwight McGlothern, but it is the "worldwide leader" I guess.

Sure, the depth could be better but Rodgers is a great fit for Flores' secondary schemes and they like Blackmon and McGothern, and Okudah is basically buying a lottery pick for a few bucks.

The secondary is going to be massively helped this year by the additions of Hargrave and Jonathan Allen upfront; the interior push upgrade will be huge over the previous guys who were solid in stuffing the run but created ZERO pass rush from the interior.

They also have money left to pick up someone in August as well, if someone gets booted off another roster; it could very well be that they've targeted a couple of guys they anticipate being cut, but that's impossible to say at this point.
