All Things 2024 Minnesota Vikings Off-Season Thread

I generally do anything I can to avoid watching the NFL Draft.

The exceptions were when Chris Doleman was selected, I stayed home from school because I was sick and happened to watch that on ESPN while it was in it's infancy. That was enough Mel Kiper Jr exposure for me to last a lifetime.

Then 2 years in a row, the weather was crappy so I was not on a golf course (1st Round had moved to Saturday) and I watched when Randy Moss and then Daunte Culpepper.

When Matt Kalil was taken I happened to be in a bar when he was chosen (1st Round had moved to during the week in Prime Time), though I think I was more focused on whatever NHL playoff game was taking place.

Last night after a late 9 holes I went to the clubhouse bar and every TV was tuned to the draft except one that was showing Golf Channel with a repeat of whatever LPGA event was going on. Essentially I was a captive audience and got in just as the Pats made their selection for Maye road it out until the Vikes made their first pick.

Hopefully it works out as well with McCarthy as the first 3 Drafts I saw, especially the 1985 & 1998 events which saw those picks make it to Canton.

I smell Super Bowl.
One thing I noticed about watching the Draft last night (for a little more than an hour), is that Teams are now only On the Clock for 10 minutes (down from 15). This change might have been made a decade or more ago for all I know, but regardless it makes it much less of a slog.

Far less time to show fans to show fans all geared up and tuned up to cheer or boo names being announced from a stage.

I always loved the 2nd and 3rd rounds picks. You can hit on these guys and everyone has a favorite or two.

Would have been awesome with watching those picks heading into the wolves game.

Oh well
Stay tuned, they can always trade back in!

It's because they divide it up over 3 days. Round 1 drags.

Longer it goes, the more commercials there are! That’s why it’s a three day affair, as well.

Didn't it used to be 15 minutes in the 1st Round?

Yes, they were.

My bad, I misread your post. I don’t know if they shortened the first round clock and then added the third day broadcasting as well?

I am guessing they made up that “lost broadcast time” someway ? Or I could be completely wrong about everything. I’m not going to lookup the history of the draft. If I’m wrong, it’s all good 😃

No worries. They probably more than makeup for it in Pre-Draft coverage, which I feel like started while the Super Bowl was still being contested and Post-Draft analysis.

And? The two are completely congruent.

Here, let me simply put them together into a single, completely reasonable sentence:

drafting a QB in the first round is nothing more than going to the casino and pulling the slot machine arm, therefore you should never give away assets, to draft a particular QB in the first round.

Stepping out of your house is a risk, you could slip and hit your head and die, every damn thing you do in life is like pulling a slot machine.

You just weigh the risk vs reward.

Maybe never drafting a QB and just praying one falls in your lap is the solution to you. I think that's idiotic.

So who are the top DT and CB left on the board that they might grab at 108?

WR's Tony Franklin and Tez Walker along with DT Mekhi Wingo and RB Will Shipley are the names of the guys that I like for 108. Looking at the roster, DT and OG are clearly our biggest needs.

This is where they need to go, unless the talent gap is significant and the best value is other positions

I would be disappointed if they took a RB with their 4th round pick. Too many other big needs.

Back when I would watch the draft, I enjoyed these rounds quite a bit too--faster paced than the first round, still a lot of familiar names, and such, but the level of impact for the Vikings 2nd/3rd rounders over the years has been underwhelming. Having some time on my hands, I started with 1981 (a magical year for me, as it was the first year I followed the draft and the Vikings had three 2nd rounders that year, with Jarvis Redwine the marquee name) and looked at all the picks from these rounds through last year.

80 picks in total and I identified 28 significant contributors through the years (pretty inexact science, but I included the likes of Alfred Anderson and Fred Robbins in the mix, so I felt I was generous). Here are those names:
QB: Tarvaris Jackson
RB: Dalvin Cook, Alfred Anderson, Moe Williams, Alexander Mattison
WR: Jake Reed, Sidney Rice, Qadry Ismail, Nate Burleson
TE: Kyle Rudolph, Jim Kleinsasser
OL: Tim Irwin, Terry Tausch, Phil Loadholt, Ezra Cleveland, Brian O'Neill, Ed Ingram, Kirk Lowdermilk
DL: Henry Thomas, Al Noga, Fred Robbins, Danielle Hunter
LB: EJ Henderson, Eric Kendricks
DB: Cory Fuller, Mekhi Blackmon, Orlando Thomas, Brad Edwards

I guess an argument could be made that Irv Smith Jr., Pat Eilfein, Cam Dantzler and others should be included, as they each logged several starts for the Vikings during their time on the team, but I didn't give too much ground to players who were cut/didn't get a second contract.

So, yes, there's some really solid names on this list, but the hit rate isn't too high, even for these rounds. And despite all our grumblings about the Vikings over the years, they've been one of the more consistently good franchises in the last 50 years, so I'd venture to say their success rate isn't an outlier to the rest of the league crushing these rounds of the draft.

My response here is not so much to refute the original post, but I've been feeling salty about the whole idea of valuing later round picks, particularly after reading an analysis from a ESPN writer that ripped the Vikings for giving up too much to get Dallas Turner. There's no guarantee that Turner's going to become a solid/star player in the NFL, but I'll take my chances with him over two or three 4th/5th round picks. The inflation of the value of these mid-round picks feels a lot like the hoarding of 2nd round picks in the NBA draft--yes, you can hit on winners and we love to marvel at the underdog story (does anyone recall what round Tom Brady was drafted in?), but I love the move that the Vikings braintrust made to get Turner.

I'd be completely fine if McCarthy didn't become the full time starter until halfway through the 2025 season. I expect Darnold to start a pretty fair amount of games for the Vikings.
I'm still bummed we didn't use a late pick to trade for Sam Howell. He has way more upside than Darnold. Oh well.

I would not be shocked if Howell was the QB for Seattle for the next 3-5 years easily. Howell has some talent, and got the shit beat out of him in Washington. If I recall correctly, (memory is fuzzy) the year BEFORE Howell got drafted in the 5th round, he was being mocked as the #1 overall pick and/or #1 QB off the board.

I'm in the minority, but I would not be surprised to see Darnold play well for the Vikings. We shall see!
