All Things 2024 Minnesota Vikings Off-Season Thread

I'm not advocating for or against Sam Darnold specifically, I'm saying they can't roll into the draft with their QB room being Nick Muellens and Jaren Hall. They have to sign someone who can plausibly be the starter next year if they either don't draft a QB or draft a project QB.

Sure they can. Part of letting Kirk go is that they already have a plan of what they’re going to do at QB.

The rebuild is on!

Raheem Morris was on the Washington staff 2012-14 while Cousins was there. He is part of the McVay/Shanahan tree, under which he played for.

Perhaps that makes a Cousins to ATL move a little more likely than if Belichick got the job.

Just speculation. It was brought up on SKOR North.
Nailed it. Not me (SKOR North).

I hate seeing Kirk go, and it almost certainly means a 6 or less win season in 2024, but if Atlanta gave him 4 years at the $ he was looking for, it's probably the right move.

Thanks for everything Kirk, you got way more criticism than you deserved during your time in purple.
Couldn't agree more. Good for Kirk, it is what it is. Time to move on.

The rebuild is good. They just need a better back-up/bridge option than what they have.

This makes it much easier. No way the Vikings should come close to this.

I just don’t see how him saying the former is the end all be all. He can listen all day Mon and Tues and we have until 3pm (Central) to make a better offer.

Media and folks on here can try to play it like “that’s because Vikings have made final offer, they know what other teams are going to offer and they will not match.” Fine, but it’s not over until the fat lady sings.

People can and do have changes of mind when the bell is actually tolling.
Good one. The Vikes counter offers should be coming any minute now.

I'm having a hard time reading between the lines on how much they are offering:

Spend salary cap on 2024 with no QB? Pass. Commit to the rebuild, clear more salary cap beyond the upcoming season and embrace the tank.
Not sure I'm following. I'm not advocating one year deals for all of the above (QB yes.) Even in a rebuild, they should use all the cap space they have available, just do it wisely.

Saquon Barkley to PHI for 3/$38M...the rich get richer:

QB Hurts
RB Barkley
WR Brown
WR Smith
TE Goedert

Yikes...right up there with DET and SF for offense.

The #Falcons are signing Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract that includes a $50M signing bonus, per sources.Another monster payday for Cousins, who gets $100 guaranteed — $90M in 2024 and ‘25, plus another $10M in 2026 — and a fresh start in Atlanta at age 35.

Kirk Cousins’ new deal averages $45M per year and locks him in for multiple seasons. By the end of 2025, Cousins will have played 11 seasons in a row on fully guaranteed contracts.

The rebuild is good. They just need a better back-up/bridge option than what they have.

Drew Lock, Sam Darnold, Zach Wilson etc are not better options. They have proven that across multiple teams (besides Wilson) over several years. None of them are starting QBs in the NFL.

Just because they were drafted higher means nothing. Mullens has better numbers over his career than all of them.

Lowe's or Karl's from now on for me. Home Depot isn't run by smart people.

I disagree and in any event it's not either/or. Mullens makes very little and none of the above will break the bank.

If they go into the draft with only Mullens they will either get completely screwed over in a trade to move up, or be left desperately drafting whoever is available at 11, even if it's a massive reach. They have to give themselves more options/leverage.

*** Greenard gets 4/$76M from Vikings
*** Pittman staying with Colts
*** Swift to Bears
*** Pollard to Titans
*** Bakhtiari released by Packers and Campbell also expected to be let go
Here’s the info on Greenard’s deal and production from last season. Like they’re spending the money on a younger developing edge rusher, than a 30 year old.

The Minnesota Vikingsentered the 2024 offseason with two pivotal needs: a quarterback and help on their defensive front. They wasted little time on the latter, securing budding free-agent edge rusher Jonathan Greenard. Multiple team sources confirmed the news Monday.

The 26-year-old former Houston Texan recorded 12.5 sacks in 2023 and is expected to sign a four-year contract worth $76 million that includes $42 million guaranteed, a league source confirmed to The Athletic.

My only real point was don't sign any FA's with guaranteed money past 2024. Greenard was a great signing but we just wasted the first two (2) years of his deal in all likelihood.

How is it wasted? You don't get to carry over unused salary cap space? It depends who it is. If it's someone you are confident will be contributing in 2026 and beyond, sign them. I'd say Greenard qualifies. Otherwise, yes make sure it's a deal that can be gotten rid of after one year if necessary.

If Atlanta … overpays for Cousins, then it is what it is. Nothing can really be said, other than that’s a push.

No crow for me.

Is what it is. Onwards to a competitive 2024 season with the objective top ownership in the NFL.

Well, one thing can be objectively said: $28M dead cap.

Former Dolphins LB Andrew Van Ginkel agreed to terms on a 2-year deal with the Vikings for $20 million, including $14 million guaranteed. The deal was confirmed by agents Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha.

I'm not sure it's that dumb. NFC South seems much more winnable in the short term. Can get out in Year 3 if it flops without too much damage.

If the Vikings were in the same Division as Carolina, New Orleans and Tampa, I don't think I would have a problem with it.

Semi-tongue in cheek but I am shocked by the amount guaranteed for a 36 year-old coming off a ruptured achilies with two career play-off wins. Baker Mayfield suddenly looks like a tremendous steal.

I think the Salary Cap going up played right into Cousins hands. The value perception has changed virtually overnight.

Wife from the area, knows the head coach who is also starting fresh, winnable Division, weren't that bad last year to begin with...makes sense.
