All Things 2024-25 Minnesota Twins Off-Season Thread

what is everyone going to complain about when the team has new ownership?

Look - I'm not thrilled about the current situation. but I understand that - for at least the next few months, it is the status quo. It's not going to change. the Pohlads are not going to wake up tomorrow and say, "Hey, let's spend a shite-load of money on the Twins." It's not going to happen.

so what is the point of bitching about it? It's like waking up in MN in February and complaining because it's cold outside.

whether the season turns out to be good, bad or something in between, I'm just looking forward to having baseball back.

I mean, it's a message board. If there wasn't complaining allowed, you'd only be left with about 10% of the content. And what's the fun in that?

The recent post showed the Twins spent all of 0.5% of what the Dodgers did in free agency over the past two years. Will complaining fix that? No. But is it fair to complain about such a thing? Yes.

If there was someone who had the power to make February warm, and they didn't exercise that power, I would complain about that way more than I complain about the Pohlads.

And to answer your original question, if the new ownership shows an indifference towards being competitive, we will all complain about that.

Jokes aside, I understand your message and actually agree to a large extent. The older I get, the more I just let the chips fall where they may, and try to enjoy watching. I had the privilege of attending game 2 against the Blue Jays in 2023 and it will always be an incredible memory for me, no matter what happens going forward.

I'm largely the same. I'll complain here and there in the offseason because there's little to do. But once the season starts, I'll be excited like usual.

Is there a single Twins fan anywhere expecting them to spend a "shite-load" of $$? That's a straw man.

They need to spend like $10-15 million on a reliever, 1B and back-up CF. If they did, they'd likely be the favorite to win their division. The fact that they won't spend even that modest sum because of "budgets" when they're about to sell for $1.3-1.7 billion is a bit sad and worthy of at least mild mockery.

This is an incredibly interesting graph, not just from the perspective of the Twins lack of spending, but the vast disparity between those top two franchises and everyone else--if you add up the entire NL and AL Central franchises plus the Angels plus the Marlins--all those teams combined would still slot in under the Mets for third on the list. That the Dodgers have spent more than teams 11-30 on this list is bonkers.

And as much as I am a "take it as it comes and enjoy having games every day in the summer" type of fan, that the Twins are getting lapped by the likes of the Pirates and Rays is something. As Ope says this BS should equate to $1 beers and dogs.

Maybe you could provide a list of things that we could discuss on the board?

Do you remember when the Pohlad family colluded with Selig and MLB in an effort to take a big check to contract your favorite baseball team?

I remember.

I think you are correct.

I would say with more than 95% certainty it's Baltimore Memorial Stadium-Brooks Robinson, which makes the Killer/Allision photo even cooler IMO with 2 Cooperstown HoFers and was well as 2 Twins HoFers.

From watching 1970 World Series Highlights (popular substitute programming during Twins Rain Delays), I was totally enamored with Robinson as a youth. Even had his model of baseball glove.

During the Reggie Jackson year with the Orioles (1976) I remember convincing my Dad to go see them when they played at the Met as Brooks was in the twilight of his playing days. I recall seeing him in pre-game, but pretty sure we saw Doug DeCinces at the hot corner instead.

Padres just signed a catcher so I doubt they have any use for Vazquez now.

Is this the signing you're referring to?

Padres bring back catcher Elias Díaz on 1-year deal (source)

From the article:

Are the Padres done at catcher?
Possibly. They can at least feel OK entering camp with this group and perhaps turn their focus elsewhere. But the reality is: General manager A.J. Preller is never done. As ever, a trade to bolster the position remains possible.
Campusano is viewed by some as a potential change-of-scenery candidate. The Athletic recently linked Minnesota's Christian Vázquez to the Padres in a deal.
It's unclear how Díaz's arrival might shake up any of the Padres’ trade machinations. If nothing else, it makes their search behind the plate less urgent, and they can turn their attention elsewhere.
