All Things 2024-25 Minnesota Timberwolves In-Season Thread

Edwards 3 shooting has been insane to start the year. Just remarkable.

I do hope when they inevitable slump comes, that's when he gets back to attacking downhill some.

But right now, if you're making em, preserve the body for the season long grind and let em rip.

Ant had a pretty good answer for this the other night, “I hope they keep going under, I’m going to keep lacing that bitch”.

Thanks, I was gonna post the story which contained that quote (not the laces part😎) in The Athletic, but here are some stats & other quotes from the story regarding 🐜 and the Wolves 🐺 3️⃣ 🏀 barrage.

———

Edwards has made an NBA-best 50 3s this season, the third-highest total through nine games in NBA history. Curry made 55 in 2018-19 and 53 last season.

The Wolves rank fourth in 3s attempted (41.3 per game) and second in makes (16.8). Last season, the Wolves ranked 23rd in attempts with 32.7 per game and 15th in makes (12.7).

“I really can’t explain it. I’m not shocked or anything because I’ve worked so hard on my trey ball,” Edwards said. “It’s like here we go. This is what’s supposed to happen. Hopefully, it keeps going that way.”

They have the fifth-best offensive rating in the league (117.6) after languishing at 17th (114.6) last season. It has kept them afloat while they work out the defensive kinks that have come with the roster changes.

“It makes the floor huge,” coach Chris Finch said of Edwards. “And he’s got great range. He’s taking them in the flow of the offense. He’s reading the coverages in pick-and-roll well right now. He’s playing at a high level.”

What a horrible defensive play by the Timberwolves to let Miami take the lead. Miami end up winning.

They set that screen on Edwards and it was all over for that layup and the free throw. Then they end up having Edwards inbound twice. WTF?
Of course that is just end of game. Too many turnovers tonight, even though they turned Miami over more times.

Good Lord! All four of their players for the inbound were at half court. How in the ever living f*** you let someone get behind you when it's obviously designed for a basket cut. They got beat by a junior high school play.

I was at the game. I have a lot of respect for Spoelstra. Brilliant coach.

They were more worried about the three.

Really good execution by the heat.

That was a really bad loss.

Ant was obviously due for an off game. Wasn't going to shoot like that forever. But not enough guys picked up the slack

Conley, woooooooof. Its time to have a conversation if its his time to be taken to pasture. Father time is hitting him hard.

Really bad loss. In no particular order:
1. Not having Rudy on the floor while Randle was.
2. Ant is a turnover machine too much at the end of games.
3. Mike has regressed big time.
4. Finch never calls actual plays on inbound possessions. Total fire drill time with hoping Ant does something good.
5. No one on the team knows what they were doing on inbounding under their own basket.

I'd like to give Connelly credit for seeing the impending demise of Conley and orchestrating the trade to acquire the #7 Pick to grab his future replacement in Dillingham.

Of course, you then need to ask why Connelly also signed Mike to a 2-year extension, albeit a very tradable contract.

The # of unforced turnovers so far this season is embarrassing.

Ant is a turnover machine at the end of games because defense is tight at the end of close games.

Ant is the only one who can put the ball on the floor at the end of games. No one else can get their own shot. Randle maybe, but he is more brute power.

This is why Conley hurts at the end. He can run the offense, but can't kick and dish or break anyone down.

Hopefully Dillingham is the answer down the line, because we need a creator.

The wolves played good defense last night. The exception being Finch's personnel on Miami's last offensive possession was based on roster politics and not the best five for the situation. The difference was that Miami plays great defense, which allows them to win when there is a talent deficit. The wolves shot poorly because there were no easy baskets to be had. All game. Even 400 year old Kevin Love plays great defense and moves the ball.

Miami sent Herro and Robinson out. Finch had taken Conley out and then got bamboozled into putting him back in with their entries.
Really winnable game they unfortunately lost.
13 for 45 on 3’s and only got to the line 13 times. Edwards with only 3 free throws.
Plus-minus can be deceiving of course, but Conley was a -16
Was disappointed in Finch last night.

Edwards only got to the line three times because he rarely went to the basket. He was hunting threes all night with very few open looks. Miami played full court defense after all made baskets and it really delayed the wolves getting into their offense. Their conditioning is excellent as is their bench. They don't have close to enough talent to come out of the east, but I'll bet their defense is good enough to steal a series.

17 first quarter points against schit Portland and 8 turnovers

Holy Schit Balls

A shot clock violation coming out of a full timeout is amazing. This season just does not have a good vibe going. Too bad they are not in the East.

I did not stay up to watch it.
A post said it was their longest 20 plus turnover streak since 1995

I watched most of the second half. The wolves made Portland look like heroes. If the wolves don't win decisively tonight, we'll know there is something significant going on.

The trade broke the defense. I don't know how else to explain it.

It would be nice if Donte would hit a shot now and then. He's been putrid shooting both the two and three.

KAT's defense improved dramatically the last two (2) years when he was no longer asked to protect the rim with Rudy in the fold.

With the NYK, KAT has once again been one of the worst defensive players in the league statistically playing C with Robinson and their other big man out with injuries.

Our defensive rotation and switching of assignments have evaporated and this all starts with Randle's lack of energy and effort on that end of the court.

Chemistry is underrated and unforced turnovers level the playing field regardless of the talent gap between the teams. Plenty of time to improve but this team is in trouble right now.

Some fugly stats, from The Athletic regarding last evening’s debacle -

They turned the ball over 23 times, the third straight game they have committed at least 20 turnovers. They were outrebounded 39-32, allowed Portland’s bench to rack up 64 points and shoot 56 percent from 3-point range (18 for 32).

These posts are becoming relentlessly negative. Do you guys hate the team. Were they 20 - 62 last year?
