All Things 2023 Minnesota Vikings In-Season Thread

How many 2nd half targets did JJ have? If you ain’t gonna use him you might as well trade him before you gotta pay him.
My favorites where the Hockenson targets. We made him the highest paid tight end in football. Twice, we threw a one yard screen that was blown up, and another one was incomplete. I'm thinking maybe having him get off the line of scrimmage might be good

Also, our offensive and defensive lines continue to blow. We just can't or refuse to fix them. Good luck with that.

Oh well there's always next year. Isn't that our MN sports motto?

really really bad loss to start the season.

last year we found ways to win, today we found ways to lose.

The Vikings could easy by 0-5 to start the season. the Eagles on going to put up 40 plus on the Vikings Thursday night.

The sad part is they would then be in contention for a top qb in the draft as this draft is loaded. Then you are starting all over again with both lines still being schit.

Not an easy fix.

Gonna be a long year with that O line and D line

Ugly game. Defense is better than last year though. Have to win one of the next two.

I'm on record having expressed significant concern about our interior defensive line, they played better than I expected. However, seemed like our dbacks were playing too far off the line of scrimmage and giving up short passes too easily. Surrendering only 240 yds is a win in my book, even if against a subpar offense.

Offense. Our interior oline has to be the worst in the league. If Kwesi was not aware of this after last season then maybe we need to find a different GM.

1) With so many NFL teams looking bad today, NFL teams should reconsider how the pre-season games are played, with so many starters not playing pre-season games.
2) TB has some studs on defense.
3) The game today was a perfect "one game example" of Kirk Cousins career. He puts up good numbers, and when he is under pressure, he cannot get it done.
4) Baker Mayfield has more fire in him, than Cousins, and it showed today.

MVP today for vikes was Brian Flores. I'm not one who believes our defense has significant talent, yet we gave up only 240 yds. Albeit was going against a subpar offense, but still. What an improvement from defense last season.

So impressed with Jefferson's post game interview. No diva stuff or pointing fingers at all. Comes across as a humble guy, easy to root for a guy like that.

I don't think it was Baker having more fire, I think it was the Vikings turning it over 3 times to the Bucs 0

Reverse those, and the Vikings win in a laugher. You just can't turn it over 3 times.

Oh great, Jordan Love looks good. I know it's the Bears, but still.

I’d love for them to just blow it up and try to get Caleb, just once instead of fighting to go 9-8 and getting the 15th pick

Unfortunately the roster is way too good to get even close to a top 3 pick

to be honest, I dozed off during the 2nd half, so I didn't see all of the game.

as others have said, it looked like the first time the Vikings offense had played a "live" game against another opponent - because it was. the Eagles game on Thursday has the potential to be messy.

At this point, with two games yet to be played this wknd, Vikings are 2nd in the NFL in most yards gained and 5th in the NFL in least yards allowed.

And also have an 0 - 1 record.

Souhan: There's no sugarcoating it: Vikings looked terrible in opener

Three days before they will fly to Philadelphia to face what might be the most complete team in the NFL, the Vikings lost their most winnable September game. Three of their next four games are against quarterbacks far superior to Mayfield: the Eagles' Jalen Hurts, the Chargers' Justin Herbert and the Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes.

If there was a play emblematic of the Vikings' problems, it was their first turnover. Midway through the first quarter, the Vikings faced a third-and-2 at the Bucs 26.

Kirk Cousins took the snap from backup center Austin Schlottmann, who was playing because starter Garrett Bradbury had left the game with a back injury. As Cousins pulled away, guard Ed Ingram appeared to knock the ball from Cousins' hands.

Which brings us to the 2022 draft. First-round safety Lewis Cine did not start on Sunday. He called attention to himself only when he was sprinting toward the sideline as the Vikings called timeout to avoid a too-many-men-on-the-field penalty in the fourth quarter.

Second-round cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. didn't contribute either. Third-round pick Brian Asamoah II did not start, having his presumed place in the lineup taken by undrafted rookie Ivan Pace Jr.

In a few days, an offensive line that struggled to handle the Bucs' beefy front may face the Eagles' talented defense without Bradbury and perhaps standout tackle Christian Darrisaw, who missed part of Sunday's game with an ankle injury.

Cousins repeatedly praised his "skill guys." He made only one positive mention of his offensive line — when he noted that Schlottmann deftly took over Bradbury's duties.

Many of the Vikings' mistakes on Sunday were silly. They lined up in the neutral zone during a field goal attempt, giving the Bucs a first down and, eventually, a touchdown. They failed to block blitzers, leading to heavy hits on Cousins and another lost fumble.

The Vikings broke the cardinal rule of beating an inferior opponent at home — they failed to put them away early. The Vikings outgained the Bucs, 287 yards to 95, in the first half. Tampa Bay managed just one first down on their first six possessions.

The game should have been over then. Instead, the Bucs trailed just 10-3, then scored a touchdown on a drive aided by Vikings defensive end Pat Jones II lining up in the neutral zone.

The Vikings wanted to win a game of precision and offensive strategy. They let the Bucs turn it into an afternoon of mud wrestling.

"We beat ourselves," running back Alexander Mattison said.

"This is tough times," Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said.

Tough times may not last, but they can quickly destroy a season.

Skol Vikes!!
