I don't consider Vrabel old school in the way Zimmer or even Belichick are. He is a very good motivator and developer of talent, and adapts to the strengths of his team. The fact that he lost Henry for half of the season, and AJ Brown for a month, and they are still the #1 seed in the AFC says it all.

You don't think Belichick 'adapts to the strengths of his team'?

I agree that Vrabel was able to keep the winning edge despite injuries, but I don't think that has anything to do with "old school" vs "new school".

Injuries are a fact of life in football, and the good coaches have always found ways to win despite injuries. Nothing "new" there. Hell, Belichick won with Matt Cassel at QB after Brady went down.

Well if they go 5-12 next year instead of the 7-10 of this year, that would be a devastating setback.

Maybe I'm not following your logic here.

To me, it sounds as though you're disgusted with 7-10 in 2021, yet you see 5-12 in 2022 as a step in the right direction. You see going 5-12 as a necessary bump in the team's progress toward the "domination" you claim should be the only worthy goal.

Is that a fair summary?

What is there to be careful about? We suck. The worst thing that could happen if we change things is we still suck.

Sure, it might not work out and it could even work out less well than the mean of what Zim/Speil(/Cousins) have accomplished with the Vikings.

There's a large enough sample size that we know what that mean is, and that it doesn't get you to the Super Bowl (and ideally win the damn thing).


So you try again. Yeah, maybe you end up doing worse on the next attempt. So then, you try again from that one, too. And again. And so on, until you get it right and/or get lucky.


Win a Super Bowl before we die. The mantra of the Vikings fanbase.
 

In other words, there is no mean that's so high that the fanbase would be willing to say "OK, you're going to win so many games here on average, that we'll keep you on even though we know you'll never win a Super Bowl".

The ultimate prize, and the pursuit of it, is really the end all, be all of what (pro) sports is all about.

No, I never said that I want to "stick with this".

But you're flat out wrong about one thing: it can get worse than what we have right now. Worse than our current level of "sucking", as you so adroitly put it.

This regime has failed to win a championship; that is undeniably true. But year over year the Vikings have at least been in the hunt. They have usually been in a position where late-season games actually matter.

It can get much worse, my friend. Much, much worse. Ask the Jets. Ask the Jags.

The current regime has had 8 years. That's long enough. It is time to make a change, I agree. But it is no slam dunk sure thing that the new regime will be better, even if they are "new school".

I feel it is.

But it's good to understand that if you're only happy with a Super Bowl, you're going to end up un-happy almost every season.

The Vikings have done everything there is to be done, except win it all.

Every playoff season that does not end in a Super Bowl win, ends in a loss.

I was a Viking fan as a kid, back in the Purple People Eater days. Those guys went to four Super Bowls, and yes, they lost them all. Yet I've never understood people who call the players on those teams "losers". They won a lot of games to get to those four Super Bowls, against some great teams.

I just don't see things in that binary way. The world is not limited to black or white. Shades of gray do exist.

I don't think people look at the Mpls Miracle season as a failure, by any means, though the way we lost the NFC Champ game was embarrassing and frustrating.

But even if you could guarantee that type of season, 13+ wins per year, for 10 years, but also be guaranteed to never win a Super Bowl ... I don't think people agree to keep that regime on.

You have to keep chasing the big one, if you've never tasted it before.

I've never heard anyone call them losers. It's nostalgic and great memories is what I hear.

Many people have the attitude that there are champions and there are losers, and all non-champions are losers.

Yes, I have heard of the championship drought. The reason I've heard of it is because we are in one.

And nowhere did I say it couldn't get worse. You kind of pulled that out of the sky.

Well, the Bears did win last week, hammering the hapless Giants.

One thing I had forgotten, not that NFL teams really 'tank', but the Bears have no incentive to lose to the Vikings as their 1st round pick is owed to to the NY Giants.

Vikings open around a FG favorite. Really hard to touch this game from a betting standpoint.

Zimmer and Nagy are both gone, so they will both try to win.

By the way, Nagy in 4 seasons is 34-30. That's actually pretty impressive when you think it's been Trubisky, dalton, and a raw Justin Fields.

Zimmer in that same time frame is 32-31-1.

That's kind of eye opening.

Someone will absolutely trade for him. Multiple teams like the Browns and Broncos are "a QB away" from contention and Cousins is better than what they have now. The return might not be what we're hoping. They can't cut him.
