All Things 2020 Minnesota Vikings In-Season Thread

Just watch the Vikes come back and play just well enough to fall out of the top 6 or 7 for draft picks.

That would be the most "Vikes" thing ever.

Seriously - if they get into the top 5, I would go for Trey Lance of NDSU.

This team is really hard to watch. I'm not sure why we rushed into giving Zimmer and Spielman new contracts before the season.

Skol Vikes!!

Tank for Trevor. Next season is Kirk's walk year. Draft QB, have new QB sit next year and learn during Kirk's final season

I think they can win 4-5 games, looking at the schedule. Who knows. The good thing is, if they do endure a death spiral, they don't need the #1 pick; there will be a couple good ones coming out

Chatter now of course is trey lance. Any bison fans out there who have thoughts about him? Good fit with the vikings?
Mahomes 2.0? :)

Trey Lance is interesting. His stats are better than Wentz's so far.

He isn't getting drafted ahead of Lawrence or Fields though.

Chip: Cousins has miserable performance in Vikings dud

At one point in the second half Sunday, Kirk Cousins’ passer rating stood at 1.8, and he somehow managed to go lower.

Yep, Cousins accomplished the nearly impossible. He pulled a Blutarsky after three quarters.

0.0.

It was that kind of day for Cousins and the Vikings overall.

This is a bad team right now. Really bad.

Offense, defense, special teams, coaching. All of it.

Skol Vikes!!

I'm a big fan of the saying "when you watch the film, you're never as bad as you thought, and you're never as good as you thought".

Couple other thoughts:
- Cousins' three picks really were not that bad in my opinion: 1) Thielen should've been able to bat it down, it was an unlucky bounce, 2) was a hail mary last ditch at the end of the half, so meaningless, 3) not a great throw but it bounced off the hands of our receiver and into the hands of their db.
- Cook had some nice plays ... but I feel like they're giving too many plays to Mattison?? We just spent all this $$$ on Cook. If he's really that big a difference, and it certainly seemed like it today, especially on our two good drives, then why the hell is Mattison getting the ball on 3rd down?? I feel like that happened on at least two stalled out drives.

Barr got hurt in the game too, and was out. Good playing experience time for rookie Dye.

Lot of rookies or younger guys getting time at corner/nickle. Holton Hill, Mike Hughes, Dantzler, Gladney.

Hoping when Hunter gets back, he can make a difference. At times, Ngakoue made some noise.

Jefferson had couple nice catches. Need him in there. Not Bisi Johnson.

Irv Smith couple costly mistakes. Didn't hear Rudolph's name much.

My understanding is cousins is due 45 million in 2022. If cut will be 10 million in dead money. Dead money in 2021 is prohibitive so he will be with us next season.

Cousins is bad, our offensive line is bad. Zimmer is a good defensive coordinator and is probably not suited to be a head coach. Spielman is to blame on the crazy money we spend on Cousin and Spielman is to blame for this mess. There are many example of how bad our leadership is.

Example 1) The Patriots signed Cam Newton for a fraction that we pay Cousins.

Example 2) One year ago, we had Dan Bailey as our kicker. Zimmer said he liked Bailey as a kicker. Then the Vikings traded a 5th round pick for Kaare Vednick and then cut him 20 days later. Dan Bailey is still our kicker. Before you say "Who cares about a 5th round pick, we had a bunch of draft picks" this was just another example of really poor leadership and draft management. These poor decisions start to accumulate, and it shows that our leadership is not very good at their jobs.

I would also use the example of trading down constantly to accumulate 15 picks in the draft. What the hell good does 15 picks, most of them being 6/7 rounders do? I’m too lazy to look up how many made the 53 man roster, but it obviously isn’t 15. Amassing the most 1/2/3/4 round picks you can is paramount. Even if you end up with only 5 or 6 picks, it’s likely those picks will help you more. If you need warm bodies to fill out the 52 and 53 roster spots and practice squad players, sign free agents or UDFA.

Kirk’s under contract for two more years.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/minnesota-vikings/kirk-cousins-9915/

His cap hit in 2022 is $45mil(!) I would say it’s likely he gets cut prior to 2022, or they restructure. There is no way they can afford Cousins to account for $45 mil of their cap.

Its actually set up perfectly. Barring some really dumb team trading for him, he’ll be the QB in 2021. So you draft a QB this year to sit a year, then cut Cousins prior to 2022 and you can afford his $10 mil in dead money because you have your starting QB on a rookie contract.

Early line has the Titans as -2.5 favorites against the Vikings next Sunday at US Bank.

Follow that up with road trips to the Houston Texans and the Seahawks, this could get ugly early.

TANK! This team needs an influx of talent. Their continued philosophy of ignoring OL, missing on OL picks, and ignoring interior linemen in the draft has hurt them.

I also dont understand how Zimmer (and i like Zim a lot) gets to be considered a defensive back wizard when they've used so much draft capital on CBs over the years

With the Vikings luck, more likely Cason Wentz 2.0 which looks a lot like Kirk Cousins.

If next week is more of the same maybe dont rush Hunter back? Maybe Cook comes up with a mysterious injury? OK if Barr comes back.

If they end up with a draft pick in the top part of the draft, losing that second round pick for Ngokue (sp?) will end up being a bit more painful than if it was a late second rounder. They better be able to sign him to a deal, otherwise that draft pick will be a big waste. It may also come up big if they end up drafting in the 10-15 range and no longer have that draft capital to move up to the 4-8 range to get either Fields or Lance.

The other problem with tanking is that there will likely be other teams tanking if they get out to poor starts. The no. 1 pick will be so valuable this year, it'll be worth it. Either you pick the best QB prospect in quite a while, or you trade it for a boatload.

I actually hate tanking in general. Just sends a bad vibe to the entire franchise. But Lawerence is good enough to justify it.

Athletes don't tank, especially in football. This team is just bad.

It's hard to be good when you trade your #1 WR, get rid of your starting CB's, lose half your defensive line, including one of the best DE's in the NFL, and your O Line still stinks.

I guess we better figure out how to score some points!

Tanking is almost entirely a fan thing. Guys are playing for their jobs, their livelihoods, their futures. It's obviously nonexistent in September and October and November; at best maybe with a game or two left, you may make different roster decisions, etc.

I still don't see there's any way we're bad enough to lose more than the Giants, Panthers, Dolphins, Jets, Browns, Broncos, etc. The only way we might be is if Cousins gets hurt. And whatever else you can say about him, he's been very durable.

All of those teams have looked more competitive than the Vikings except for the Jets. The Jets are really, really bad.

I think there is literally zero chance they end up at 1. The Jets are just garbage. Giants without Barkley are probably right behind them. I'm just hoping for being close enough to the top to either draft Fields or be close enough to trade up and get him.

The Jets are maybe the only one of those that could concern me about finishing worse than the Vikings; they will be facing a very hard decision (or maybe not so hard, depending on how this season shakes out) on whether or not to move on from Darnold after this year. Of all those teams, they have the best combination of being bad enough to finish worse than the Vikings AND need a QB.

I guess the Browns could decide to move on from Mayfield but I think they'll win plenty of games anyway. They have some talent on the roster. Giants, Dolphins, Broncos (if Drew Lock isn't out long and continues to improve) all seem to have their QB.

And I have to say, it's beyond painful watching MNF tonight knowing my f'ng seats are sitting there empty at Allegiant Stadium for the inaugural home game of the Las Vegas Raiders. F*&##*%$*$%*$%*K!!

Actually, the more I think about it and listening to a sport podcast this morning, if things went south enough for the Giants this year and they thought they had seen enough, they could very well move off Daniel Jones after just 2 years. And they could most definitely finish the year with just a few wins, looking at their schedule.

At the very least, it may not be the first choice of QB's but if the Vikings finish with only 5 wins (possible, sure) or so, they would be able to do something there in the top 4-7 picks whether it's stay put or trade some capital to move up a few spots. I just don't think all 3 of Fields, Lawrence and Lance are going #1, #2, #3.

heard PA talking to Mike Zimmer this morning.

Zimmer said this - (actual quote) - "We have to figure out why we are losing games."

I damn near drove off the road laughing.
