STrib: Winston DeLattiboudere uses his Gophers football perch to give back

When Winston DeLattiboudere saw pictures of his relatives in Jamaica during their graduation ceremony, he noticed they didn’t have any caps and gowns on their special day.

At the time, he told his mom there had to be something he could do to support them. So he stowed those ideas away. When the Baltimore native was working on a neighborhood project through the Hmong International Academy, those thoughts of giving back materialized again.

DeLattiboudere thought there had to be a way to combine his experiences in an effort to give back — especially using his position as a Division I athlete.

There was. The senior ultimately landed on a school supplies drive in which fans could donate notebooks, pens, pencils, anything they could. Bins were available at practice Friday for Gophers fans to contribute items.

The supplies will be donated to the Hmong academy and Rock Primary School in Jamaica, where DeLattiboudere has relatives.

“When I got the chance to play college football, I was always going to push and give back to elevate the community my family comes from,” DeLattiboudere said. “It was such a struggle for my family to come over and immigrate to this country.”

B1G visit

Aside from the Big Ten Network visiting practice on Friday, the Gophers had another guest: Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany.

Delany, who has held the position for the past 30 years, is retiring in June 2020. Kevin Warren, Vikings chief operating officer, will succeed him. Gophers coach P.J. Fleck and the team gave Delany a team-signed oar and a No. 1 jersey with his name on it before practice Friday.

“You put that wherever you’re retiring,” Fleck said to the commissioner.

Actually Bleed, let's give credit where credit is due. The article was written by Souichi Terada is a Star Tribune reporting intern.

Not a criticism, I love the work you put in getting these articles posted. Just want to give an intern some recognition.
 

The BTN hosts said Nubin really stood out at practice as well. Sound like he’s going to be a good one.

I like Howden for how much he improved last year. If Nubin is stealing a starting job, that's good insurance and a nice problem to have.

How do you do that Catholic prayer thing? In the name of the father ...

Sorry, I’ve just seen him tossed around and ran around, far too many times in the past. I’m a pessimist at heart.

But for the sake of hope: please, please, please, have improved. Don’t get our only experienced QB hurt.

I hear ya for sure! But in Sam's defense I thought he played hurt most of last year? I know when healthy prior he looked decent and one typically gets better year to year. The fact they didn't switch Blaise there is a good sign and the fact he held off the JUCO guy everyone thought would replace Greene is also a good sign IMO. Hopefully Sam is healthy and improved and we will see the "real" version of him.

You're correct. And the thing that always defeats a message board rube like me: the coaches are there, every day, every practice, and they're paid to evaluate and put the best player on the field.

Last year he started the season at RT. I don't recall the non-con being a problem, but we won all those games. Maryland and especially Iowa he got embarrassed a few too many times. He was replaced by Faalele at halftime in Iowa game, and we know how that ended up. Faalele never looked back and will be the starting RT this season.

He did suit up some games later on in #48 as a weird "TE" role where he was essentially the sixth OL. I think it was a bit of a trendy thing last season, with some NFL teams running it as well (Seahawks?). I don't recall it ever being particularly effective, and I think its use trailed off towards the end of the season.


There could be something that we don't know, like a nagging injury last season perhaps. But we can only go off what we see. If that was the case, I don't recall it ever being publicly disclosed.

We trust the coaches' judgement - unless it involves a player we don't like.

We expect all the players to improve from year to year - but a player we don't like can never improve.

It's funny - there always seems to be one player on every team who is a flashpoint for the fans' ire. Leidner carried that role for several seasons, and now Schlueter has assumed that role.

In less than two weeks, we get to see an actual game, and can all do our own evaluations. But, assuming the coaches would not deliberately start a lesser player at a key position, I have to conclude that the coaches believe Schlueter is the best choice. That might mean he has improved. It might mean the depth at OL is NOT as strong as we might hope. Or this could be another Faalele situation where a younger player takes over the starting spot by mid-season. we shall see.

I will note that during the BTN visit, Fleck told the BTN crew that - if I remember correctly - they had 7 or 8 OL they really liked, but Fleck wanted to get to a point where they have 8 to 12 players in that situation. Still the BTN guys, especially DeNardo, were raving about the improvement on both lines.
 

Far and away the most positive they’ve ever been about a Gophers team in the 9 years I’ve been watching that show. I think they were surprised by what they saw. Howard Griffith said as much.

Fans aren't always wrong. We were clamoring to get rid of Robb Smith last season and when that change was made we were off and running.

Fleck is which of the five placekickers in camp will replace Emmit Carpenter, one of the best in school history. “Right now none of them have really run away with the job,” Fleck said. “They have made some, they have missed some. We have to get more consistent at that position.”

• The Gophers have a better chance of building a winning schedule this year than next year, when they play their first four games at home — including games against Iowa and BYU. They also have Michigan and Michigan State on the schedule, which they don’t have this year.

Off the top of my head I can recall starting a left tackle vs 2015 TCU that could barely move and didn’t make it through the first quarter. Might have cost us the game. Durr was sent in vs Purdue and couldn’t run. Schleuter really struggled. ZA proved to not be the best option at QB last year. Perhaps Cashman was underutilized.

Like SON said maybe there are no better options and it is what is is. Maybe with the new wave practice of minimal hitting/full on scrimmage in practice it’s more difficult getting a feel for abilities. But, maybe coaches talk themselves into thinking a player is healthier or better than they really are. They’re human with biases like the rest of us.
