GopherHole Q&A: Gabe Kalscheur Talks Recruiting, Upcoming Visit to Gophers

Gabe Kalscheur, a 6-foot-2, 189-pound junior guard from Minneapolis (MN) DeLaSalle, is considered one of the top players in the Minnesota Class of 2018. Kalscheur received a scholarship offer from Minnesota last summer.



Kalscheur averaged 18.1 points per game as junior for the Islanders, who finished 27-3, winning a state record sixth straight championship. He scored in double figures in all but one games, including a season-best 30 points versus Fridley. He shined in the postseason, averaging 19.5 points in the section playoffs and 20.3 points in the state tournament, including 20 points in the state tournament championship 72-44 win over Austin.



Kalscheur scored 27 points to lead DeLaSalle to a 79-56 victory over Fergus Falls in the 3A title game in 2016 to become the first boy's team in Minnesota history to win five straight state championships.



Kalscheur recently caught up with Gopher Hole to talk about the latest on his recruitment, summer plans and upcoming senior season.

Gopher Hole: You guys are off to a great start AAU-wise. How pleased are you with how well you guys are playing?



Gabe Kalscheur: Really pleased. We just came out strong and we are going to finish strong. The goal is to go to Peach Jam and win it.

Gopher Hole: You have some guys back from last year like yourself, Daniel Oturu and Tre Jones, but you added a couple of new pieces like Jarvis Thomas, who seems to have played really well with you guys. How hard has it been to get that chemistry going?

Gabe Kalscheur: Not that hard. The first game was a little struggle because it was our first time playing, actually. I think is why we lost our first game, but after that, we have been coasting.

Gopher Hole: How about your own individual play? How pleased are you with how well you have been playing?



Gabe Kalscheur: I have been very pleased. I have been shooting the ball very well. I have been playing at a high level and it has been an honor.

Gopher Hole: I think that you had one game where you had 32 points and were seven of eight from three-point range. Were you feeling it that day?

Gabe Kalscheur: Yes, I was. I hit my first two in a row and then I was feeling it and Tre (Jones) kept giving me the ball and everyone kept giving the ball. It was all good.

Gopher Hole: Was that a game that coaches were allowed to be at?



Gabe Kalscheur: Yes.

Gopher Hole: I think that you picked up a couple of new offers from Pittsburgh and Bowling Green. You are up to five. What other schools are you hearing from besides the schools that have offered you now?

Gabe Kalscheur: I have been hearing a little bit from Colorado.

Gopher Hole: Have you thought about trying to make some visits at all?



Gabe Kalscheur: I am going to try to talk to my parents about visiting in the summer, like June when we are off.

Gopher Hole: Have you even thought, I know that it is still a ways away, about when you would even try to decide on a school? Would you try to sign in the fall or have you even thought that far yet?

Gabe Kalscheur: I said that I am going to commit after AAU, like before school starts.

Gopher Hole: What are going to be the main factors that make you pick School A over School B or C?



Gabe Kalscheur: If it feels like home, because DeLaSalle feels like home to me and I want some place that wants me for me and my personality and my game and will use me to get me to the next level in the NBA or overseas, wherever that gets me. .

Gopher Hole: Obviously, you guys have won six straight titles, but you are going to have a different look without coach Thorson. What is that going to be like?

Gabe Kalscheur: It is going to be different. It is going to be new. That could be a good thing and a bad thing, but hopefully, it is a good thing.



Gopher Hole: What has he meant to you as a coach?



Gabe Kalscheur: He's meant a lot. He has been a figure to resemble on and off the court. Not the yellingness, but how to talk verbally on and off the court.

Gopher Hole: He has been a college coach and now he is going back into college. Do you that has helped you since he knows what it takes to play at that level?

Gabe Kalscheur: Exactly. Defense is a big part of playing at a high level in college and also maybe starting your freshman year, so I think that I am set for defense.

Gopher Hole: Are you going to any college or individual camps this summer?



Gabe Kalscheur: Hopefully, I can make it to one of the basketball academies (on the Nike circuit). So hopefully, I can make it to that.

Gopher Hole: How about your team? Are you playing in anything for DeLaSalle?

Gabe Kalscheur: I don't know if we'll do a team camp, because we don't have a coach yet (DeLaSalle hired former player Travis Bledsoe as their new head coach four days after this interview).



Gopher Hole: Obviously, you are going to be the favorite again to win another title. What would it mean to win a title every year that you played?



Gabe Kalscheur: It would mean a lot because people have done it before me and I want to be in that line to do it again. This one will be different because Thorson wouldn't be there, so it will be like my state championship. .



Gopher Hole: What are you hearing from the homestate school. I know that you are close to Ben Johnson because he is a DeLaSalle guy. What are the Gophers saying to you?

Gabe Kalscheur: They want me to come down and visit the new facility that is being upgraded. I think that I am going to do that soon.

GopherHole Q&A: Big AAU Season Has Jarvis Thomas' Stock on the Rise, Planning Upcoming Visit to U

Jarvis Thomas, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound rising senior forward from Orono (MN) High, is one of the top wings in the Midwest in the Class of 2018 and is considered the number six prospect in the class. His strong play this spring has earned him offers from power conferences such as the ACC, SEC and Big East. Thomas is expected to make an unofficial visit to Minnesota soon.

Thomas averaged 15.9 points per game as he helped Orono to a 23-6 record, losing to six-time defending Class AAA state champion DeLaSalle 71-68 in the Class AAA, Section 6 finals. He scored in double figures in 24 of 29 games with five games of more than 20 points, including a season-high 27 points versus Waconia and New Prague.

Gopher Hole caught up with Thomas recently to learn the latest on his junior season and college recruitment.

Gopher Hole: You are playing with Howard Pulley this year. You guys are off to a great start AAU-wise. How pleased are you with how well you guys are playing?

Jarvis Thomas: I am more than pleased. I kind of can't really believe where we are at right now, but everything seems to be rolling pretty well for us.

Gopher Hole: Was their nervousness about the chemistry because they have guys that have played together and you hadn't really played with them. Was there any nervousness about that?

Jarvis Thomas: No, not really. We put good players together and it just works for us. I was never really nervous about it, though.

Gopher Hole: How about your own individual play? I know that you played really well this spring. How pleased are you with how well you have been playing?

Jarvis Thomas: I am actually very pleased with how well I have been playing. Thank you, by the way. You can always play better, but so far, I am pleased.

Gopher Hole: You picked up some new offers like Nevada, Marquette, Texas A&M and Pittsburgh. How many offers are you up to right now?

Jarvis Thomas: I think it is nine. (Green Bay, Oregon State, Arizona State, Iowa State and Cal State Bakersfield have also offered)

Gopher Hole: Have you given any thought about trying to visit some of those schools?

Jarvis Thomas: Me and my mom have talked about going to about visiting Pitt and A&M, I am pretty sure and possibly Butler.

Gopher Hole: When would you do that?

Jarvis Thomas: We don't know yet. Most likely June or like early September.

Gopher Hole: They had an article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune recently about you. It said that you are going to try to play football again this year?

Jarvis Thomas: Yes. I am probably going to play football this year.

Gopher Hole: How do you think football helps you for basketball?

Jarvis Thomas: It helps me in every way. It makes me tougher. More physical. I am a receiver, so I can catch some of those lobs that people don't think are catchable

Gopher Hole: The article also mentioned your relationship with former Gopher Jonathan Williams, who you have been working out with a lot. What has he meant to you?

Jarvis Thomas: He means a lot. Coach John has helped throughout this whole thing with recruiting, my skills, my social life. Even stuff between me and my mom. Like everything. Dude means the world to me.

Gopher Hole: Is that especially nice during the recruiting process, which has picked up quite a lot to talk to someone who has gone through it?

Jarvis Thomas: Yes. It is great to talk to somebody who has gone through it.

Gopher Hole: If I had told you a year ago that you would have these kind of offers, would you have been a little bit surprised or did you think that you had that potential?

Jarvis Thomas: I would have told you that you were lying.

Gopher Hole: That has to make you feel pretty proud, though?

Jarvis Thomas: Yes, it does. Definitely.

Gopher Hole: Does that make you want to work even harder to hear from other schools?

Jarvis Thomas: That has only added fuel to the fire.

Gopher Hole: Obviously, you are playing with a great team and that has to help you, too, especially Tre Jones, who will put you in the best position to be successful. Is that kind of nice to have a point guard who knows where to get you the ball?

Jarvis Thomas: Yes. For sure, Tre is great guard. He has been helping me out. He is probably some of the reasons that I have gotten the looks that I do. Definitely, he helps a lot.

Gopher Hole: I have seen some YouTube highlights of you recently. Do you ever check those out yourself?

Jarvis Thomas: Sometimes, yes I do.

Gopher Hole: Do you ever think, how did I do that?

Jarvis Thomas: I don't really realize what happens. I just do it.

Gopher Hole: Have you given some thought about when you would even try to decide on a school? Would you try to sign in the fall or have you even thought that far yet?

Jarvis Thomas: You know, I was think after football season, before high school basketball starts. In that area.

Gopher Hole: What are going to be the main factors that make you pick School A over School B or C?

Jarvis Thomas: The relationship with the coach. The players and the style of play.

Gopher Hole: What about Minnesota? I know that they have picked up some interest in you. What are they saying to you?

Jarvis Thomas: They haven't really said that much. They just want me to come for a visit to look at the new facilities and stuff.

Gopher Hole: I know that Daniel (Oturu) has committed. I know that he is talking to you and some of the other guys. What is he saying to you?

Jarvis Thomas: Daniel is just saying "Come home."
 

Let's say Otero successfully recruits his Pulley teammates to join him at Minnesota. What would our ranking be for the recruiting class?

Otero 4*
Jones 5*
Thompson 4*
Kalesheur 4*
and if we have a fifth Thomas 3*

That's gotta be pretty close to a top 5 recruiting class, behind Duke, Kentucky and Arizona for sure.

Top 10 for sure. No guarantees on top 5 since the pattern the last few years has five stars coalescing at fewer schools. Doesn't Kentucky have five of them this year?

I'm more of a recruit for fit and need than just by ratings anyway, but it would be great to have a loaded class with local players. Perfect for my provincialism.
 

Can we make it a rule that you shouldn't post the same big long article that takes up the whole page, in multiple threads? Very annoying to see these Q&A's in the player-specific recruitment thread, the thread for the whole class, and then its own thread. No reason for that really. I'm probably being a grouch but surely there are others who agree.

Thanks for the recruiting interviews Chris and GH! I really appreciate them. I also appreciate you putting them in different threads as I don't always look at the same threads. Surely there have to be the vast majority on this site that appreciate the work you do and the recruiting articles. Keep it up!
 

Would love to get a commitment from this kid. Looks like a more physical Dupree with a better skill set. Looks like a really nice combo guard.

Does the Hunter visit put pressure on Gabe to make a decision? I wonder if the staff would take both? I would think no.
 



Surprised no one has mentioned this but the gophers picked up a crystal ball on 247 for Tre Jones a couple days ago. The evaluator is apparently an EYBL expert and has a 100% hit rate.

His 100% hit rate is because he's been correct on the one prediction he's made, which was Oturu to Minnesota. I think Darius Garland and Tre Jones are both 92% Duke predictions. Still kinda cool to see though.
 

Alec Kinsky's a local guy (as in from Minnesota) that interviews players for D1 circuit at the national AAU events and some of the all star games. Tough to say whether he would have inside info or not but I think he may have just put two and two together when Tre got a bump in his Scout ranking.

True - I missed that re: the 1 for 1 thing but re: the 92% crystal balls for Tre, many of them are close to two years old. Kinsky made a bunch predictions this week including Garland to Duke. If that plays out, it would seem The favorites for Tre would become UCLA, Arizona, and us. If we can lure Kalscheur, that could only help. The two of them seem tight.

I mentioned it in the Tre Jones thread, but Arizona recently got a commit from a 5 star point guard, Brandon Williams.

Ohio State just offered Eric Hunter. He had a Butler offer so this makes sense.
